Title: What is this on the forward hatch?
Post by: JohnF on May 21, 2016, 01:07:43 PM
Hi all,
New CP 19 owner here. I recently bought an '87 CP 19 and I'm going through it trying to get it ready for the summer season. I have found answers to countless questions on this forum, it's a really great resource. My question today is, what is this device or fitting on the forward hatch? It looks like some kind of vent or light source. Right now it's busted out and I need to fix or cover it somehow. Can anyone help me identify this thing and tell me if it's replaceable or what?
Thanks,
John

Welcome to the land of happy Com-pac owners.

Looks like the prior owner mounted a toilet and removed it hastily, perhaps from lack of privacy?

Kidding.

That is a remnant of a scoop vent, such as this one:

Hard telling what brand it is.  Personally I would remove it, measure the hole and acquire a new that will fit the hole.  The jib sheets will probably catch on it, so you would want to remove it while sailing. Most of them come with screw on covers to seal the hole when the scoop is not being used.  Or you could put in a mushroom or passive vent such as this..

Looks to me like there was once vent set atop that stub of a pipe sticking up out of the hatch.
What gets me is the non slip molded into the fiberglass goes around the pipe's exit.
This is a factory hatch designed for a vent.
Probably right out of a West Marine catalog.
Very strange on a Com-Pac 19.

Me? I'd do away with the hole and remove the stubbed pipe sticking up and fiberglass the hole closed.
Or purchase a replacement hatch and screw on the new one.

Craig.

Thanks, Salty & Skip. The previous owner spent some time "gunk holeing" up & down the Maine coast with his wife. I think he made some modifications to make the berths more comfortable and accommodate a  privy. I like the idea of the stainless vent fixture, as long as it's reasonably watertight. Otherwise I think I will just remove it and cover it with a piece of clear plexi for now, and eventually replace the hatch. Any tips on where to find a replacement?
Thanks again.

Not so strange, I have on my'85 19/11 the same thing just not sheared off.  It is indeed a vent/ scoop. I orient mine towards the stern to draw air into the cabin while sailing, and windward at anchor.

Com-Pac can supply you with a replacement

I have an 85 and the opening was a scupper vent location.  Yours appears to be the deck  fitting for same.

John,

I have one on my 84 CP-19.  Old and cracked so I recently replaced it with a solar vent.  Fit right in the same hole.
