Title: Suspending the boat
Post by: rbh1515 on April 20, 2016, 06:44:52 PM
I stopped down at the boat yard to check on my boat.  I'm waiting for them to paint the bottom before it goes in (hopefully this weekend).  They had the boat suspended by a strap in the stern and a strap through the boweye up front with nothing under the keel.  I was furious.  The head of the yard didn't think it was a big deal...they were going to let it suspend that way until they painted the bottom on Friday or Saturday.  They are waiting for a bit warmer weather to paint the bottom with VC17.  They promptly put blocks under the keel.  You really have to keep an eye on these guys.

And furious you should be. Glad you caught 'em before it dropped.

I don't see anything wrong with hanging half of the boat's weight from the bow eye.
And a second strap a stern ... I'd be O.K. with that.

I would not be over joyed with a strap through the bow eye to hold at least half my boat up. The bow eye is made to pull the boat on the trailer, not hold it up. The bow eye on my Sun Cat didn't even have a backing plate along with the forward cleat had no backing plate. The old rudder, that is 3/8" aluminum, makes great backing plates for your boat, that is what I've been cutting up and using . Hope every thing comes out good for you and your boat and maybe use another boat yard next year.

I talked to Rich...he did not recommend it....good enough for me if the builder says no!  I called down to the factory at about 5:30pm EST on Wednesday when I saw the boat hanging at the yard and Rich answered the phone!
