Title: 40 pounds of concrete
Post by: HeaveToo on April 14, 2016, 06:12:09 PM
My boat has been sitting heavier in the transom since the battery modification that I made last year.  I had been contemplating ways to balance the boat more and I came up with an idea.  I bought a small container from Ace Hardware and a 40 pound bag of concrete.  I filled the small container (about 30 pounds of Concrete) and I got it set in the container.  I have placed the container in the bottom of my anchor locker (I already had something there for a bucket that my anchor rode sits in anyway).  I took the remaining 10 pounds of concrete and put it in a small container.  That will probably go up there as well.

We will see how it works.  Best part is that it was cheap and if it is too much I can remove it.

Interesting, Matt.
I found that although I made no battery modifications like you did, my 23  sails better with a little more weight forward. My spare fuel is carried on the foredeck and I used to keep the bladder full of water even though I didn't use it. I'll be curious to hear of how your boat handles.

Bob, I really hope that you get to see how it handles.

I keep my 13 gallon tank full, for the most part.

There really is a perfect place to put this weight.  My cooler also sits in the typical place where outboard guys keep the cooler and that does weight a bit when I am cruising.

I will keep you posted!

My HDC was leaning a bit starboard because of the battery.  I bought 1' square sheets of lead to even out the boat.  Lead sheets are nice because you can mold them to fit into a space, they do not corrode, and it is easy to add or subtract weight.  Pretty cheep too.

Plus, if you put the lead in the water container, you can start acting like a Roman Emperor!

Assuming you keep them separate, where did you get the lead?

I put some water containers up front; seemed to help a bit. If I need to drink that water, I'll just replace the container(s) next trip.
