Greg Cowens' $10 PVC Roller Reefing for CP-16's by Greg Cowen

Below are the instructions to build a roller-furling unit for under $10. Read the entire process before beginning the project.

Materials:Tools:
Variables, for a Com-Pac 16:Procedure (DRY FIT ALL PIECES IN THE FOLLOWING STEPS, DO NOT GLUE):

Top end cap assembly:Spool for reefing line (feel free to improve on this method and let me know what you come up with!!):Bottom section between the bottom hank and the spool:Attaching tube and spool assembly to the end cap: Trial fitting the assembly to the front stay (Mast is not stepped and is in the cradle):Installing the Sail:Completion:
Title: possible modification

I ran this furling system for two seasons but tired of the pvc tube breaking at the couplers.  Maybe I wasn't filing the slots in the couplers properly, but the assemblies I made had the tendency to break at the couplers with frustrating regularity.

I haven't tried this, but one modification I'd make to this system would be to use a solid length of 1/2" or even 3/4" pvc without the couplers.  I'd take the brass hanks off my genoa and use electrical tie wraps through 1/8" holes in the pvc tube to attach my sail to the furling tube.  The rest of the system would remain the same.  I think this would increase the integrity of the furling tube and make the system less prone to break under the normal stresses of trailer sailing.

My 2 cents ...

i think wmsmart has the right idea. i also took off the brass hanks and used wire ties. the 1/8th in holes seems the simplest fix of all. i cant wait until a nice day when i can alter my rig.
