Title: Smith Mountain Lake 50K Around the Lake Race
Post by: Tim Gardner on February 08, 2016, 09:20:20 AM
There is upcoming on May 21st a sailing race in which I would like to see a showing of ComPac-O-Nauts and their mighty vessels.  I'm participating with my 19 and will likely need a crew member or two to help.

The 50K Around the Lake Race will benefit the National Kidney Foundation. Participants will have an opportunity to raise donations for this charity and compete in an epic sailboat race on SML. The race will start off Pelican Point, sail up the Roanoke River to the bridge, back down to the dam, around Rock Island and then sail up the Blackwater River to the Gills Creek and finish off Pelican Point. Total distance is 33 miles.

Race will begin at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 21st., 2016. Registration must be submitted by May15th.

Let me know if any are interested.  T'would be the first SMLCPR ever.

Tim,

Thanks for posting this; if I have a tow vehicle figured out by then, I might come up with my WindRider 17 and I"d really like to get acquainted, and to learn more about the lake. I have heard a lot about it from others over the years but never been there.

Can I row it?

Rowing to Tangier is less distance! Sounds like a fun race Tim. We will be at a music festival that weekend and we always joke about it being the third rainy weekend in May so just be forewarned it probably will rain!

Bob, it's for sailing keelboats only - click below for the rules:

Tim: It seems that it's open to keel boats, not just sailing keel boats. I have a small skeg- does that count? hahahahaha
Is a row to Tangier possible? You guys know the conditions better than I. How many miles? I haven't gotten out my chart to scale it off but it sounds like fun!

Well as far as Tangier goes.....long fetch, tides and current, you will go out of sight of land, tricky docking currents unless you can pull off slack tide. Dude a fellow rowed the Atlantic but think that sailing would allow the hands to be freed up for pics, the usual sheeting, and hum...removing an occasional 12oz ballast!

bob, cant you rig a mast boom and sail for that thing?

Actually, Kick:
They do make a sail rig for the guideboat but none other than the owner of the company talked me out of it! What a great and honest guy Justin Martin of Adirondack Guideboat really is! So... a rowboat she is... and a rowboat she shall always be!
Bob23   I'm gonna chart this out. And Rick, I never drink and row!

Hmmm. It appears to be about 12 nautical miles from Smith Point to Tangier Island. I have no idea what's in Smith Point; I just picked it out because it was obvious on the chart. Regardless of the Tangier trip or Smith Mountain Lake race, I may just plan to do this. 12 miles is pretty short but I do admit to knowing nothing about the local conditions.
And now back to our regularly scheduled thread....

Well that's because your hands are full! I'm impressed that you would consider it. :)
row, row, row your boat......

Tim: I don't know if I could trailer the intrepid Koinonia such a distance but given enough PBR, I might be able to be convinced to crew aboard your boat. Now...would that be a blast! How much trouble could you and I get into is the real question.

That crazy guy who rowed across the Atlantic by himself is my cousin Charlie!  http://transatlanticsolo.com (http://transatlanticsolo.com) .  He's done it twice and now is planning to row around Great Britain.  When I mentioned to my former boss' wife that he held the record for rowing the Atlantic single-handed, she commented "wouldn't he just go in circles?"

Jon...that is too funny and I won't even inquire as to the color of your former boss's wife's hair....nuff said about that!
Charlie must be a true athlete! I'd love to speak with him sometime...

He has a website with a "contact" page http://www.charliepitcher.com (http://www.charliepitcher.com).  I've never met him...he and I have a paternal great-grandfather in common, so he's strictly a second cousin.  He's from the side of the family that was into racing sail (his father won the worlds in the Flying Dutchman in 1965) while my side was into cruising.

(Tim:  Sorry for highjacking your thread, I'll stop now)

Tim,

My son, Chris, and I are looking at SML event and the Tangier Island raid.  The Chesapeake is looking mighty big right now from a 16 foot perspective, and the Lake just a little smaller.  Depending on what we can learn about "off shore" navigating, shipping channels, weather patterns, and etc., we may choose the Lake.  We will keep you posted.  My CP16 is being equipped for either event.  I sure would like to see a CP event at the lake, but Tangier Island has been a long time dream . . .

Tim,

My computer does not have Office, another long story.  Is there any other way to access the race information and registration?

I'm sure my C16 will be the shortest boat in the event and therefore it may not be much of a race for us.  It could be a really nice father and son trip around the lake; I could take pictures of the fleet as it goes by twice.

Tim,

My new computer problems have, I think, been solved.  After weeks in and out of two shops, I placed a wire between my WiFi tower and the computer. So far so good.  Hopefully, no more blue screens such as what happened when I was down loading "Office".

Could you e-mail me the registration forms for the SML event?

Thanks,
Citroen/Dave
