Since we hijacked No Mas' thread with this topic I figured that I would go ahead and place this here.
When: January 30, 2016 (Saturday)
Where: Dockside, Colonial Beach, VA http://www.docksidetikibar.com/
Address: 1787 Castlewood Dr., Colonial Beach, Virginia 22443
I am hoping that this is a good location and we can pull some of the MD Compac Owners and a few others from around the area.
Dockside is a restaurant/bar on the Point of Colonial Beach. It is located at Colonial Beach Yacht Club. Usually they have pretty good food. It is a popular local spot and sometimes they have live entertainment.
I am going to keep this rather informal. We shouldn't need a reservation or special set-up since it has a bar area. I can't tell if they will have live entertainment on that day but they might. That usually starts around 8 or 9 though.
What time would be good for a meet-up? Would you rather do lunch 12:00pm or Dinner at 5:00pm?
Oh, Lodging in the area: There are several local hotels, including: http://riveredgeinncolonialbeach.com/ I believe that is an okay hotel but I have never stayed there so I can't say for sure.
Fredericksburg, VA is about 45 minutes away. It is an okay sized city and there are plenty of places to stay there etc. Also, Dahlgren is a suitable area as it is a Naval Base and right by the Rt. 301 bridge.
Time, place, and location can change based on the needs of the group but let's get the ball rolling!
I checked the menu...no PBR. You guys are safe!!!!

When: January 31, 2016 (Saturday)
Umm, Jan 31, 2016 is a Sunday on my calendar. Do we mean Jan 30, 2016?
I will put it on my calendar, but it's a little doubtful to make it at this point. I'm hopeful for an actual sailing event on the Chesapeake next year, because it's probably easier to get the Admiral to approve that leave.
I can do the 30th or 31rst. Lunch works best.
I fixed it to January 30.
Bob, we are just trying to upgrade your tastes! PBR=hangover water.
We still need to figure out the time and works well for everyone. Either way, it should be a good place and a good time. I don't think that there will be many of us coming but who knows.
Let's keep it going!
I really have a hard time navigating when I get more than 15 nautical miles away from the sail club, but I do want to visit my Great-great-grandfather's grave at Point Lookout sometime. If I can plan that trip for late January, maybe I could join your gathering. Will let you know for sure for head count as we get closer to that date.
Lunch may be a good option.
Anyone else want to weigh in?
No Mas here! Been down with the boat, hmmm...almost sounds like a disease! Anyway pretty sure those dates will work.
So Bob23, you just need rifle racks on your boat to go with the PBR and 4x4! You're still welcome though. :)
Will keep all posted.
Hmm..you are about 4 1/2 hours from me as the 4x4 flies. That's not nearly as far as the CLR (14 hours) and I had no problem driving out there. Consider this a serious warning!!!!
Well Bob23,
I hope you will make it! PeterG filled me in about you over lunch one day (don't worry it was good!). It appears No Mas and Saga will be playmates as they are in the same neighborhood together.
Well Saga will be a not far away playmate but jus down the road I meant Beagle 3!
Ok all, just putting it out there again as a reminder for a mid winter gathering of Chesapeake Compac owners. We have at least three of us on board and a threat from Bob23 that he just might attend (you know the financial enforcer, ..er i mean officer, for the forums) I know I saw a CP16 in Kilmarnock last month, know there were a couple Compacs for sale in the middle and lower bay area, so we know you're out there!
Don't miss an opportunity to get together after the holidays add some 12oz ballast, grub, and talk about the "other woman" in our lives while planning some spring cruises in our little corner of the world.

This seemed to b a good mid-point for both lower and middle bay folks. HeaveToo says it's a great place for such.
This should be a good time at a good location. I don't know if there will be live entertainment that evening because I can't seem to find the schedule on it.
Either way, it is water front....VERY water front (on the tip of a Peninsula).
I hope we pick up a few more.
I HEARD THAT!!! So now I'm gonna make an extra effort to crash your little party!!!! And I know I shouldn't bring up business here, but your check bounced and my cousin Vinnie is not happy...no, not happy at all. So Vinnie, myself and uncle Vito are gonna pay you a little visit, see? It's nothing personal, just business!!!
Ha!!! Looking forward to this and if humanly possible, I'll be there. I've already run this by the Admiral and she isn't too enthusiastic about it so I may just bring the "other woman" along. Hahaha!!!!
Bob23...marking the calendar!
No Mas,
Not to stray too far from the topic, but just a reminder that hard labor on an Admins boat, and of course plenty of good beer, will call off Bob's "dogs" from the hunt.
Was thinking about coming out there to visit my cousin in Baltimore about then, but it doesn't look like I can make it after all (having surgery and will still be laid up).
Well..maybe next time. Have fun, and watch your back when Bob "Soprano" 23 is around. Trust me on that.. :)
All right is appears i may have to call in my IMF group on this. (Improbable Mission Force)
So....Bob23, your 'other' woman might be more than necessary to bring if you are referring to the 23 foot long girl you have!
Also don't forget that Admirals are usually desk jockeys and it is up to the actual Commodores and Captains to gittr dun! Hope that you can crash this one.
Desk jockeys??!!?? Boy, this admin job is vastly misunderstood, and obviously not appreciated. We work tirelessly to keep this forum up and running.
Why, I happen to have a picture of the 4 admins at work. A thankless job, but somebody's gotta do it!
Now you all know why we make the big bucks!!!!!! Thank you Salty for setting the record straight!
Bob23
A truly inspirational image!
Well up early today before a trip to WWW and just saw this photo.....i must admit that floating and drinking simultaneously is a skill that i refined over the years captaining tubes on some of the rivers here. I am truly humbled by the work that is put into their jobs, the close quarter maneuvering skills, the flawless Tilley deployment. the coordinated loading of cruising ballast, I agree...inspirational! Now I believe that the mid-winter Chesapeake gathering may not have quite this much of an in-water approach, but ya never know once you start loading the 12oz ballast!
Couldn't even see a desk!
We were all standing on it! Just pretending to float.
Correct me if I'm wrong Tim but wasn't that one of more stressful board meetings?
Most definitely my good man, could hardly stand up on the board. I guess it would have be a snow board meeting at the CBMWG.
"We were all standing on it! Just pretending to float."
Ah...that explains much. At least it didn't look like a BORED meeting!
Bob, no problem on setting the record straight. Folks need to know that this place just doesn't run on Lime Bites Plus alone.
No sir-ree!
"I guess it would have be a snow board meeting at the CBMWG."
Naw, will be on those kinda boards a lot this winter so thinking since i do have wetsuits from my WW paddling days.....
then again I do remember the feel of winter water with wetsuits. Don't even think the 12oz ballast will get me to purposefully jump into January Bay water!
I understand that there are some Compacs on St. Maarten, been in the water there in January, don't even need to stand on a desk!
When I was in college I was near Virginia Beach, VA. We would surf all year long. I never had more than a 32mm wetsuit. COLD!!!!
I don't think that I would do that again. I use to also sail a sunfish all year long, except when there was ice on the Potomac.
Ah, Mr. Heave:
I hope that's a 3.2 mm wetsuit. 32 mm is about 1 1/4" (estimated)! Hahaha!!!!
yes, 3.2 We use to call it a 32 wetsuit though.
Here in NJ we call that a 3-2. Hear the difference? I also surfed all year long many moons ago and my son does the same today. I remember waking through snow to get in the water- true dedication. Not now...
Now I am worried about the CBMWG, everyone has purposefully immersed themselves in cold water for the sake of fun! We have, in our paddling days, had to use our boats as ice breakers just to get downstream. Are we sure that we ought to be getting together to plan stuff with this kind of history!?
Maybe a new thread on reinforcing the bows of our boats? :)
"Waking" through the snow, in a one tongue pulled boat...
Sorry, carried away.

Not sure I like the way you present that!
:)
Alright I have been informed that only Nuclear War will keep Bob23 from crashing the 1rst CBMWG. He is threatening to bring PBR! Guess we could at least supply some mesh bags, not sure about the tethers!
It begins...:)
Yes, as Sherlock Holmes would put it: "The game's afoot"! Did you know that PBR is canned with lead? Even a nuclear war won't ruin the great taste!
Twill be a grand gathering! Who woulda thunk that getting a boat came with such benefits.
Is this a cult?

Heave, I am heading down to the boat today to perform the "winter sleep ritual". If you want to head to Topping, Va. you can watch. I will be wearing a sailcloth tarp/robe (until i figure out how to rig up a companionway cover), making barely intelligible utterances, and filling her belly with diesel oil. Might even break out some not so sacred beverage to consummate the act. Still so sure this is not a cult!!
I have heard that this is what the Compac gatherings look like up north: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBIdcUxdgo0
I have no idea when I am going to get down to the boat again. I have so much work to do for the spring and I am dragging my feet because I am working insane hours lately.
Good luck with your winterization rituals. Don't forget to sacrifice something to Neptune. LOL
I think that through all the boat work I have done with my boat that I have had enough cut myself enough and bled enough that the boat is a blood relative!
Nice video reference HeaveToo! I love the sense of humor in this group.
Is this a cult?
"YOU WILL ALL BOW BEFORE THE MIGHTY BOB23"!!!!!!
Does that answer your question?
Come to think of it, I thought that I saw Bob23 wearing a headdress like the one in the video I posted in a picture. He was in the background dressed like that.
Whew.....No Mas, I found you a list!
Warning Signs that You are in a Cult
If you suspect the group you are in is harmful, but are not sure, ask yourself these questions:
do they claim to have a special corner on the truth, something no other groups has?
are you told to not question what is being taught, as the leadership are godly, honest, have divine authority and you must trust them?
are you discouraged from asking questions as to why members have left, and expected to accept the reasons the group leadership gives you?
do they put down other churches, groups, etc, while pointing out their faults and errors to build themselves up? do they use peoples faults and sins as examples of what to do and what not to do?
are you made to feel your failures, as though your performance is not up to par to their righteous standards?
do they recommend for you to be around their people, expecting you to attend all group activities? if you do not, are you are questioned about your spirituality or dedication?
do they stop you from reading anything negative about themselves?
do they call those who fall away enemies, dogs, or cancer, even using examples from the Bible or other such materials?
do they place and emphasis on evil and the devil, declaring that the world outside is a threat to the group?
do they defend themselves in every area?
do they give importance to a spiritual goal, such as enlightenment, godliness, salvation, that has no real tangible way of being measured?
do they operate in humility, or seem arrogant, and make demands on you to obey, using such statements such as "real believers obey without question or if you really were a devoted follower you would do such and such"?
Be aware of:
an instant bonding or friendship without even knowing you
being told you have a special calling or potential and that if you join you will move further ahead; flattery is used often in cults
when you ask questions about the history of the group, the answers are vague or avoided altogether
feeling that something is being hidden from you
Um Num Bob {Dong} Um Num Bob {DONG}
Gee, this cult thing sounds like my place of employment! Kidding...
The Admiral and I visited my aunt this fall in the Boston area. We stayed in Plymouth, MA and ate breakfast one morning at a place called the Blue Blinds Bakery. The bed and breakfast we stayed didn't actually serve breakfast, but rather gave meal cards to a few local establishments.
It was a very...odd...restaurant. Very good food, but the staff were zombie-like hippies and the decor was really unusual. We didn't think a whole lot of it--we've seen plenty of weirdness in our travels, and being the oldest town in the US, along with a reputation for ghosts, it just seemed to "fit".
That evening when dining with my aunt and cousins in Marshfield, MA, they mentioned that a cult had taken up residence in Plymouth and ran a bakery.
They couldn't remember the name of it, but the Admiral blurted out: "Was it Blue Blinds Bakery??". An immediate "YES" was given! So we explained that we had just had breakfast there that morning. Then they told us of the "Twelve Tribes" cult. I was fascinated by this-almost obsessed with learning more about them, it peaked my curiosity as I've always tried to understand WHY people do the things they do. Of course I had zero interest in joining up, I was just trying to understand why someone would join a cult.
Well, your description is absolutely accurate of this Twelve Tribes group. A charismatic leader (con-artist), healthy doses of fear, God, chosen salvation, child abuse, eschewing of "the world", forced free labor, communal living and giving up all worldly possessions. They feed off people without much a future-lonely, outcast hippie types. They draw them in with friendship and slowly wash their souls of non-cult traditions and lifestyles. Wow...talk about brainwashed. The leader of course has full control over these people, is now extremely wealthy thanks to free labor and the strict standards he imposes on them in quite unbelievable. Very much like you describe, No Mas.
But wait, that's not all...this is a global organization with "tribes" in several US states, as well as several countries on various continents!
Google Twelve Tribes and be prepared for the shock of what you'll learn. And Bob, don't get any ideas. You collect the fees here, but that's as far as it goes! Got it??!?!!
By the way I am taking full responsibility for sidetracking this thread 2 pages ago. Sorry about that. MAYBE someday the CBMWG will be discussed!!!
I DEMAND TOTAL ALLEGIANCE!!!!!
You crack me up.
All hail Bob23!
SELL ALL YOUR POSSESIONS, QUIT YOUR JOB, LEAVE YOUR FAMILY AND SEND ALL YOUR MONEY TO ME!!!!!!!! Who sais this is a cult! Bring me his head!!!
HA Bob! Caught you! You messed up! How can it be a Compac cult if they sell ALL of their possessions. They can't sell the Compac or we have to shun them.

No, as long as they send their money from the sale of their ComPac to Bob, they are still in the cult. They will spend their days polishing the hull, doing the bottom, and refinishing the teak on HIS Compac.
That's being generous. The chosen one Prophet Bob23 will work us day and night with our only tangible reward being hardtack, warm, stale PBR and promises of future eternal salvation. IF we're lucky he'll put some cots in this backyard shed for the commune.
You can take your cult, your outrageous site fees, stale PBR and shove them where the Suncats don't shine, oh scurvied chosen one.
All this talk about PBR confirms that it is a cult!
Darn it, real sailors drink rum. I learned that from watching Pirates of the Caribbean. You know that it is true if it is on TV or on the internet.
I tried the rum. Bacardi 151. Didn't make me heave to, but it did make me heave!
Bah....that stuff isn't that good. Try a good spiced Rum: Captain Morgan or Sailor Jerry. If not that, dark rum like Kracken.
That sounds like a good campaign for a rum company: Real sailors drink rum.
Thanks Heave!
I was only kidding. The 151 experience was 42 years ago. Couldn't face a rum bottle for at least ten years following that night.
Like my cousin who fell into the upholstery machine, I'm fully recovered now.
I agree with you on the spiced rums. They are tasty!
Excellent ideas...Dark and Stormy!
Well, Heave: I'm not looking for mindless followers...of course you can keep your Compacs and anything that is needed to maintain, trailer and sail them.
Now on to rum:
Gosslings, Pussers, Kraken and Newfy's Screetch are my choices.
Bob23
Sheez, I go away for a few days to put No Mas to sleep for the winter and I find in my absence my cult reference has stirred up some interesting dialogue! Now i am certain this is a cult. Well Bob, I found an altar to PBR in the men's head at an oyster bar across from our boat. Will send photo.
Hung garlic all around her, ya never know!
PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN! THE GREAT AND TERRIBLE BOB23 HAS SPOKEN!!!!
Bob, my son, stop threatening the flock, and come sit, here on my right side. Bwaahahaha! Did you bring your usual offering of rum & PBR?

Hmmm...this is more serious than I thought. It does motivate me to try and clear our calendar for the Mid-winter dinner, kinda thinking it will be 'last supperish'! I am expecting to bring a couple fish and maybe a loaf of bread, figured i could stretch it to feed everyone. Maybe even some water walking races! I do think that will wish to turn water into PBR, jus sayin!
I do think that will wish to turn water into PBR, jus sayin!
it is really so close anyway! :)
That is because PBR is already pretty much WATER!!! Bad flavored water that gives you Montezuma's revenge.
So for those who may have been a little amazed by the discussion, we do wish to remind all that we are hoping to lure Chesapeake Bay Compac owners to come out and gather while our kids are asleep. Some where in this thread are the particulars. Clearly there will be an interesting gathering! Stories will be told.
Alright you PBR bashing thread thieves!!!! I'm gonna be there come hell or high water.
I see the location. And I see the date. But am I missing the time? Lunch or dinner?

Bob23
Yup. it'll be lunch or dinner! Good question Bob23, not sure we have all weighed in and still hoping to lure others. Either would work, though if we are hoping to travel afterwards then lunch works well. Bout 2 1/2 for us one way. Got some thoughts?
No Mas
We will have to check with the Dockside calendar after the first of the year to be sure that they are open for lunch. Lunch was a thought but may have to be dinner, depending on dockside.
From what I see right now they are open for lunch/brunch at 12:00pm. It may be easier to do lunch because if people are driving they have plenty of time and light to get home.
Thoughts? Concerns?
Oh, Bob, I don't think that they serve PBR. Their beer list is weak with only American Macro Brews. Blah!!! Anyone say Rum?
Hmmm...only macro brews, no craft beers? We are definitely beer snobs! May have to check this out.

So you have to scan the site carefully but found this:
"Ask your server about out craft beer & micro brews on tap! We also offer an extensive wine selection."
There is hope. Will call to get an idea. Seriously, if that's the beer menu listed then might even welcome PBR! I suspect those are the bottled beers and the craft brews are on tap, which would be preferable anyway.
Either lunch or dinner works for me or us, if I can convince the Admiral to come which is doubtful. I'll go along with what the masses decide. And, let me take this opportunity to dispel this rumor that all I drink is PBR. Actually, when it comes to beer, I'm a Guinness guy through and through! And I like some of our local NJ beers from Flying Fish and Riverhorse. But....gimme a Dark and Stormy and I'm a happy guy. With a PBR a chaser, of course!!! hahahaaaaa!!!!
As long as Peter doesn't mind further tarnish to his already questionable reputation, I may be appearing with him! Till then, mates,
Bob23...for the cause!
"if I can convince the Admiral to come which is doubtful"
:Pretty sure my first mate will be coming! She is quite capable of drinking most men under the table if required! I will also lean towards lunch but also will lend ourselves to be flexible so the most folks possible can come. Hear ya on the Guiness, it's food, Breakfast, lunch or dinner! Do i hear common ground?! "brilliant!"

Ok folks...a little heads up here....there is a chance that a fellow sailor from our little corner of the world may be looking to become a Compacteer. (said like Buccaneer)This means a few things:
1. We wish her luck on owning a boat that clearly has a cult following
2. Good chance she is lurking even as i type and though she is more than capable of taking care of herself we should encourage Bob to not bring up PBR, Rum yes, PBR no.
3. Means if it happens there will be another at the CBMWG as I am sure we would extend an invitation .....right guys!?
will keep you posted.
Absolutely! Would you expect anything less from me? On the surface I might appear to be a sniveling, PBR guzzling wharf rat but underneath....I don't snivel! Looking forward to this epic event.

As Tim Gardner already said, "you crack me up!" Gunna be a fun time.
No mas:
Regarding the above, I'll make sure I'm on my best behavior. I hope she comes to the event. Has she bought a boat yet? What Compac is she looking at?
I'm looking forward to this. It'll help break up the January doldrums. Any word on lunch vs. dinner?
No need to be on best behavior, just Bob behavior! We wouldn't want folks to gain a false sense of security!
Don't want to divulge too much as things are still in flux, but it will be a 23 if it happens. Just sold a larger "37 ft" Bring On Another Thousand vessel and is ready to understand the less is more philosophy. Hope it happens cuz we all love playmates for our girls don't we?
I shared your sniveling comment with my wife and thought she was going to pass out with laughter. She approves. :)
Think i am hearing lunch. Heave Too was gunna check out the hours to make sure. Do know they have a better beer selection that first thought. The draft selection varies but is craft oriented. I am too looking forward to a winter, wait a minute winter starts tomorrow and it is going to hit mid 70's by Christmas, gathering. Maybe we should have planned an on water event!
http://www.docksidetikibar.com/calendar/
I am still trying to figure this out. Can anyone make sense of this? It looks like brunch from 10:00am to Noon. Then it mentions 3-5 for something else. I say we vote on a time to meet!
If we eat at noon then it will be a while before the entertainment would start. On Saturdays they USUALLY have live entertainment. Some of their bands have been pretty good. I would imagine that the Tiki Bar will be close though.
Who knows. I am all for making it easier for everyone involved.
Oh, I thought of a killer Summer/Spring meet-up...meet at Tangier Island. That place is something to see, especially since in 50 years it may be underwater. We can talk about that later on.
I'm liking the CBMWG already. all I need to do is show up and behave. Well, one out of 2 maybe.
Sounds like a call might be the next step so we can find out "the deal" on hours. I vote for lunch so that daylight is available both coming and going.
Heave, Imma thinkin we don't need to worry about when the entertainment is starting, kinda figure it will begin on the first round of 12oz ballast! If this warm weather persists, we could Bob for PBR's, meant bob for PBR's. Heck if it's lunch we should bring beach chairs and a little suntan lotion.
Cant begin to think about a spring/summer cruise yet. i want some winter so i can go skiing!!!! May have to head out west if this keeps up. Might have to de-winterize the boat and go sailing.
So guys the lady who wanted a 23 has for a couple reasons had to settle on a 18ft boat of Alberg design, a Typhoon. I think anyone who had seriously considered a Compac 23 but had to pick something less expensive ought to still be invited. The Typhoon will be a great boat for her as well and be even easier to single hand.
so Heave, any thoughts on that lunch concept? Think I was hearing lunch over dinner?
Yeah....Lunch is fine. I think that it is a good time.
A typhoon 18 is still a smaller boat. Still, I can't imagine not being able to afford the Compac because there are plenty out there for a cheap price. I guess it is all about budget. She is definitely invited though.
I couldn't imagine going any smaller than a 23. The 23 seems small to me when I have been aboard for a few days.
Lunch is fine for me. I can enjoy Guinness anytime! I'll contact the infamous PeterG and maybe converge with him.

Lunch it is!
There were many factors at play with a nice restored Typhoon close by and the closest 23 at almost twice the price. She wanted a no project boat and all of the "cheap" 23's are no where close or far from ready to enjoy. Hey Typhoons are sweet boats and the RYC has regular regattas with them. A classic. My guess is that she will daysail a lot as she has a home on the water in Urbanna and can walk down to the dock and climb aboard.

We will not be able to make it this year but my wife is from Colonial Beach and stayed at the Rivers Edge last year when she returned for her 50th Class Reunion. It is a nice place and the people in Colonial Beach are friendly. Traditionally it is not a busy place this time of year. There is a good boat ramp right at the point and the Potomac is wide and beautiful. I think ya'll will have a fun time! tj
I am a native of Colonial Beach and the HS as well. It was a good place to grow up. I spent a lot of my younger days sailing a sunfish. I practically sailed 365 days out of the year. If there wasn't ice on the river I would be out there!
This thread is cracking me up! lol :D
Sounds like it's shaping up to be quite the Shindig.
Yeah, and I'm trying to play the straight man here and keep these clowns in line. They don't pay me enough around here!
bob23 is secretly worried that if he comes down to the Chesapeake Bay he may not want to go home!
It should be an interesting gathering on the Point (that is the area where Dockside is located by local name).
I have a bunch of time in May off. May 16-June 5, I think. Anyway, I am going to figure out what I am going to do during that time and may see if some of us want to meet over at Tangier Island. That would be an awesome place to meet.
I estimate Tangier is about 63 miles from me via the water... probably more than a single day trip. Since I'm not going on my annual ski trip, maybe I can get permission to go on a week-long sail trip, which could be fun to tour the bay.
I won't be able to make the CBMWG, but hope you have a great time.

CBMWG is shaping up to be memorable. We should make plans to really enjoy the venue cuz we might not get invited back! Sailors on shore leave SOS.
Who all do we have coming to the Party On the Point (POP)?
It should be fun. Dockside is an interesting place. The marina there is a neat place and if you visit Colonial Beach by water it isn't a bad place to stay. My marina isn't too far from there. There is really good sailing in the area too and it is close to a public ramp.
For cruises within 16 miles of Colonial Beach:
Cobb Island, MD (nice place, good restaurants, small night life).
Canoe Neck Creek, MD (nice anchorage with excellent holding. There is a restaurant close by but I have never been there).
Breton Bay, MD (There are some really good anchorages here. Leonardtown, MD is there at the end and there are restaurants and a GREAT bar there).
Nonomi Bay, VA (Great anchorage, not much to do around there).
Port Tobacco River (Good place but I haven't been here).

Cool article on Tangier Island. Maybe a little motivation for some to come out and visit it this summer.
Ok folks (Chesapeake Bay area) who may be suffering tom the mid-winters what happened to sailing (those of you way down South need not pay attention!) the CBMWG gathering is on for 1/30 in Colonial Beach. You have been forewarned that this gathering has the potential for some after gathering posts that should be epic, jus sayin! Clearly PG13

Are you threatening me, No Mas? As if that was your real name. The brave and intrepid PeterG and I were on the phone and barring a national disaster or those pesky North Koreans dropping another of their little bombs, I will be there.
Bob23
So it's high noon, right?
Have not seen a definite time to meet, so we'll tie our horses to the hitching post around noonish! Looking forward to the event!
And....there may be a surprise visitor who will remain unnamed for the moment. Hahaha!!!!!
I think that noon was the definite time.
I am looking forward to meeting up with everyone. This should be a good time.

Well wouldn't call it a threat, just a promise! :)
Glad to hear PeterG has moved from being infamous to brave and intrepid!
It would be useful to weigh in on our spouses attending. Mine is down to come if other ladies are coming.
Probably not for my wife. She may have to work.
I do believe that my bride will be in attendance at the CBMWG. Since this is a black tie event, she will get the jewels from the safe!

Susan (Miss No Mas) will be coming then!
It's always nice to bring the family jewels! :)
The Admiral will not be attending and has threatened that should I bring a girlfriend, I'll be court martialed, divorced and murdered in a slow and painful fashion. She didn't mention in what order. What a lady!!!!
Well Bob 23,
It's because you already have another girlfriend! Hmmm....think her name starts with K or sumpthin about that!
Here's hoping you guys have a great time this weekend. Will have to wait to be introduced to the Admiral another time.
Cheers!
I could bring the fur baby....Freyja, but I think that Dockside wouldn't let her in. LOL. Freyja is my puppy. She is a 110 pound puppy.
Sorry that Bob's wife won't make it. I will work on mine but I don't think that she can come. So far she has had to work the weekends that I am off.
I am hoping that she will try a trip on Saga this year. I want to get her to go with me to Leonardtown, MD for an overnight trip. There is part of me that hoped that she would like the Compac because it would be easier for her control and learn on. So far, no go.
Well Heave we have to talk in hushed tones about the CBMWG around our home because our dog, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, will think it is all about him. Bay (he goes by his middle name) wishes to be the center of attention and usually is! He already believes the Bay was named after him and he so loves his water and will break ice with his chest just to swim. We will leave him home because he simply would not understand not being part of it in case Dockside thought about excluding him. Plus he is known to spill beer and then look at us with a "don't get up, I'll just lap it up" expression that has led us to believe the "spills" might be purposeful. :)
Freyja is a Maso Mastiff. She should be 120 pounds at 2 years. She is well on her way. Great dog.
Okay, so I'm still working out the details with Bob23, but it's looking good that I'll be attending.
Sounds Great! Try to bring the lady in your life so our's will have company! Know Bob23's Admiral will probably not be coming so there's more room for the two of you!
Got two ladies on board so far, plus it'll help us from getting thrown out by Dockside if there are more ladies present. :)
Looks like you all had a great time at the Mid Winter Bash up there.
I told you: I cannot bring the lady of my life or the Admiral will chop me into little pieces, Jimmy Hoffa style. Looking forward to meeting all you Chesapeake Characters!
Yeah... sorry the Wife can't make it she has an accounting seminar to attend that weekend which frees me up to go, albeit alone.
Well my wife can hold her own with a room full of dudes! PeterG's lady will be in attendance so there will be some sorority.
May try to get to the boat either before or after this bash. she needs new port gaskets. Shoulda dun em earlier but why when you can do it in the cold of winter after they have leaked! PeterG did suggest i do them way back in November, warm November! Now i need to redo a little teak paneling as well. Well the beer will stay cold!
Peter's wife Becky will have her hand full trying to keep Peter under control. Trust me. They are both wonderful people. Remind me to tell the story of when we met at a Barnegat Bay Bash and I threatened to steal her! Hahahaha!!!!!!
bob, make sure you post a bunch of "sailing" pictures for your jan 30th event.
we will be fitting ice breaking prows on our boats first, then bubblers to keep the beer hole from freezing over!
I can feel the envy already. :)
Kick:
You can count on me for completely unbiased and honest photo journalism. The names will be changed to protect the guilty!
well i was only half kidding about the ice breakers on the boats and a bubbler for the beer hole....just finished rigging a heavy canvas tarp over the cabin and companionway as too cold for putting in new port gaskets. A temp fix may have worked anyway but this is going to be an epic storm. Might consider bringing some cross country skis to CBMWG.
Almost gave you a call PeterG as went out for some comfort food after a cold day on the boat. Promise i will call next time i am heading down to boat. Meanwhile will see all next Saturday. Bob23 better stock up on PBR before the blizzard, Heave ever heard of anyone cross country skiing out from Dockside?! Might happen. :)
Stay warm and snug everyone. As soon as we plow out and am sure power is good heading back up to our mountain and i aint coming down till CBMWG!
I love cross country skiing. I'm getting my stuff out tomorrow in anticipation for some skiing in the NJ pine barrens.

then you gotta make a trip to this place: http://www.whitegrass.com
Friends of ours and wonderful folks, wonderful food, incredible trails and awesome beer! Kinda hippy meets coal miner. Nothing better outside of New England. Check out the Daily Report link and you'll spend the next hour just reading the posts.
I did check this out the first time you turned me on to it. And my first thought was "I gotta go!" Seems like the best way to get into trouble this side of sailing!
You guys miss physics class? you never got that kinetic and potential energy thing? gravity? They make these things called ski lifts. It is a unique device that takes you to the top of hills and then you use gravity to get back down.:)
Kidding, but since this post is already woefully off topic I'll mention that I'm going to Winter Park in a couple of months to do this the easy way. However I am planning to run 10-12 miles in the AM with wind chills at about 12F.
Well since we are off topic some, well it is about the folks coming at least, would like to chime in that we DO snowboard and ski as well. Actually once this storm is over and i plow us out we are going back up to our mountain (Wintergreen) where we have a little place and will be gravity slaves (alpine skiing and boarding) till we head to CBMWG! Jus really like the free the heal, go anywhere freedom of X-country! I agree with Bob23, it is the next best way to get into trouble this side of sailing! Moonshine up there is not just a heavenly orb!
Enjoy Winter Park, have been there moons ago. Also used to run marathons until one day i asked myself why i was running since no one was chasing me! Still will do a 10 miler or so but done with the crazy stuff. Stay warm! If you really wanna get crazy, drive all the way up here for lunch next Saturday with us!
In a meager attempt to steer this back to CBMWG or at least the Bay, it ought to be interesting to see what this Nor'Easter is gunna dish out before it's done. Lookin like Jersey shore going to get hit hard too. You got the PBR loaded in Bob23?
Stocked with flashlights, generator, milk, Maine Root ginger beer, lime juice, rum and PBR. Bring on the snow!!!!
I get 1 hour of Comp time for every hour that I work this weekend. I will get about 30.5 hours of Comp time. I got 8 hours for the holiday last Monday and another 2 hours on Wednesday. Combined with my 137 hours of Comp that I already have banked and knowing that I have to burn all of those hours before next January I think that a nice sailing vacation is in order....say at least 3 weeks!
Also used to run marathons until one day i asked myself why i was running since no one was chasing me!
Boston 2012 was my last. I considered running another and in fact trained for a late fall/early winter marathon the last two years and ended up with nagging injuries that prevented the race. So I called a press conference and announced my retirement from racing any distance over a half marathon.:) At 69 my body just can't seem handle the training cycle and I don't enjoy it. Still can break 1:50 in a half and what I do every week keeps me ready for them without having to ramp up.
Speaking of Marathons and things off topic....I've been trying to get into shape to do a Sprint Triathlon, but seem to keep coming up with injuries. Hope this summer I can finally complete one. :)
To those of you wishing to get in shape should sign up to move snow out here on our farm in the shadow of the Shenandoah National Park. We got 24+ inches and i have made a start with both the tractor and by hand but didn't want to hog all the fun. K3vin I am sure this would help with a triathlon training regimen!
Bob23, the storm treat you guys alright? Looked like some nasty storm surges happening up there. I know that down in Topping ,where our boat is located, they had storm surge 3-5 above the already high full moon tide and 10ft + seas with 40-50kt wind with 65kt gusts. More than likely as the wind shifts there will be an exceptionally low tide as well. Sure glad we didn't plan to have the CBMWG this Saturday! It is still a week away but they are calling for fair weather in the 50's. A veritable heat wave for our gathering!
Well the sun'll come out tomorrow and you can bet your bottom dollar as soon as we are cleared out it's time to hit the slopes! Yes Brackish we are going to be gravity slaves and be doing alpine skiing and boarding! No running up here for a while. Looking forward to seeing everyone next week.
We didn't have near the tidal flooding that the naysayers were predicting. But we did get about 14 to 18 inches of wonderful snow! I'd forgotten how much I like to shovel! I have a technique that is a bit different than most people. First, I bring out a thermos of hot coffee. I shovel a bit, get distracted by the beauty of the snow, shovel a bit more, stop to take some pictures, shovel more, stop to gab with any neighbor who'll stop to gab, pour a cup of coffee, look around at the drifts and birds and in the case of Sunday, the perfectly blue sky. Shovel a bit more, gab, drink coffee, day dream, shovel. And in no time, I've enjoyed a perfect morning and all the snow got moved somehow.
High winds, power out for a few hours so we fired up the Godan coalstove (with wood). No problems. Got out for some cross country in the pines on Sunday afternoon. Just a wonderful weekend.
I'm all snow shoveled out! :/
Damn, I hate to say I agree with Bob, and I won't. I popped a Yeungling, and watched my neighbors compete with each other to see who could plow the most snow. My driveway was cleared three times before the snow stopped falling.
I even switched to dark and stormy as I was entertaining shoveling - not!
Well, I believe that we should be a go for this weekend. I will be at Dockside this Saturday at 11:30am.
FYI....It looks like they stop serving brunch at 12:00. http://www.docksidetikibar.com/calendar/
My wife has to be at work so I will be alone.
I am looking forward to seeing some of you there.
Well pretty sore today so getting on slopes late! Three days inna row in the bumps and my legs refused to go along with my mind this morning1
Bob23 i had a similar snow shoveling program for years except i was younger and had to get it done but wanted to make it fun. The plan.....take a six pack and place beers at set intervals in the snow to be shoveled and once we got to beers it would be break time! Ah youth! Glad to hear you got some cross country in.
Yup the weather is looking almost springlike for the CBMWG so guess the cross country ski idea may not be doable at Dockside! Heave i am assuming that they will have a regular lunch menu after 12 right? Susan will be coming so PeterG's wife and family jewels will have company!
Well coffee is almost done and blue sky and snow are calling, so unless we have a last minute add we should have Myself and Susan, Heave, Bob23, PeterG and wife, K3vin. That sound right?
That sounds like a good gathering of folks.
There is a live band at 9:00pm but I know nothing of them. That would be a long time to be there.
Ok i can't believe I'm saying this, but my not in shape for skiing, especially the bumps, legs are finally telling me it is time to find sea level and flat ground! Gunna be leaving the mountain tomorrow so we can turn around and head to the CBMWG! Looking forward to seeing/meeting everyone.
Heave i can pretty much guarantee we will not be hanging till the band starts. My guess is we will be lucky if we are not thrown out well before then!
What do ya say to a drunken sailor,
etc. you know the tune!
Actually since Bob23 has promised to be on good behavior i guess I can too!
Ok i can't believe I'm saying this, but my not in shape for skiing, especially the bumps, legs are finally telling me it is time to find sea level and flat ground!
LOL, while the retirement from marathon distance press conference took place this year, the retirement from skiing the bumps press conference took place a long time ago.:)
You folks have a great time at the CBMWG. Wish I could be there. I'm told that Bob23 is a man of his word with the exception of any claims to be on good behavior.
LOL, while the retirement from marathon distance press conference took place this year, the retirement from skiing the bumps press conference took place a long time ago.Smiley
Yeah i'm a little slow on the shoulda given them up years ago. It's just too much fun! Till the next morning. :)
So Brackish, if you leave tomorrow you can be here by noon on Saturday. No since missing it when you can spend the better part of a day driving here!
Hey Brack, you haven't got any if..... Lets see, fly into Dulles and Bob will pick you up on his way by!
Alternatively I will chauffeur you from Roanoke if you can get here

Am I to understand Tim Gardner will be offering rides from Roanoke? Which means, am i to assume Tim Gardner is coming to CBMWG? If that is truly the case Brack you wouldn't have to drive at all! Just spend the time winging it up from down south to near the center of the known universe, where Tim would drive you within 5 mies of our farm (center of known universe) on the the way to Colonial Beach. If that is the case, the white stuff that you will be seeing everywhere simply laying on the ground...is snow. Know its only in pictures for you deep south types!
Wait: In re reading a few posts above, you state that I promised to be on my best behavior. And you believed me? Hahahaha. Although it's a lot of driving, we are looking forward to meeting you fellers and taking this road trip in my most unique automobile.
Bob23
Hey, not to put a last minute damper on this get together but I've been reading some really bad online reviews of this place. There were varying opinions about the food and service but almost everyone I read came to the same conclusion:
"Beware the Dock Side"! Hahahahahahaha......Hahahahahahaa!!! Hahahahahaha!!!! It doesn't take much to amuse me!
Bob23
Well i think i qualified it a few pages ago when i said "Bob" behavior was all that was really expected as we didn't want folks to get a wrong idea!
I read the same reviews, some glowing others not so. Figured the location will be good and the food typical, slightly overpriced, fried, non gourmet, style. Hopefully the service will be good as how busy can it be on a Saturday lunch at the end of January. Heave sounds like you are the only one who has ever been there so don't hesitate to chime in! We are not going for the food, beer yes, company definitely!
Heck, we might as well go over to the Dockside, i can feel the force already!
While I do appreciate the various travel arrangements that have been suggested, I am preparing to travel in the opposite direction. Going to Boerne, TX for my mothers 92nd birthday. However prior to doing that I've agreed to sail with a young man who bought a Columbia 7.6 with no previous sailing experience and has been struggling along with what he could pick up from the internet. So, at the exact time you folks will be doing the Saturday lunch and discussing how long it will take for the snow to melt, I will be sailing and attempting to impart my meager knowledge of the art on a newbie. 68F with winds at 10 SSW.
We do get snow in North Mississippi BTW, just none right now.
Ahh...in the interest of full disclosure, I never read any reviews! I just needed a setting for my "Beware the Dock Side" wisecrack. When will you guys learn not to take me so seriously? Hahahahahaha!
Well also in the interest of full disclosure i did glance at the reviews. Think my assessment is going to be pretty accurate. Good location (on water), cold beer, umm that covers it right!? :)
May the force be with us as we go to the Dock Side.
So Heave since you are the CB guru, you got any field trips planned for us?
Well looks like Heave wants to set up a new topic for this (CBMWG happened) but it is necessary to not lose all of the lead up to this gathering for folks who may wish to join in the future! So folks it has been a great topic from the lounge topic 'No Mas has New Home' leading into the meeting of folks who have Compac's near us, to maybe we should get together, to a new thread for CBMWG, to slowly having folks move to coming, to an interesting discussion of the COC (cult of Compac's), the usual but great off topic discussions from jumping into cold water purposefully, running, skiing, beer, cruise suggestions, storms, well over two months of great discussion leading up to a great time, meeting all yesterday with the feeling we had all met before. (Well PeterG and i had met before but our spouses had not!).
I believe Bob23 is keeper of the photos and certainly the keeper of the Edmund Fitzgerald beer, since he drained it all! (we still need to get a Guiness!) A trip to Tangier may be in the works and who knows what else!
Do i hear the CBMWG 2 already being discussed!?
Going cross country skiing today before it all melts. :)
