As of Friday, we now own a 1983 CP 16 that was previously from Wisconsin. We will be based from Tilghman Island, on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. My family seems less excited than me, but I'm hopeful they will enjoy sailing.
Are there any rules for setting a boat 's name? Our boat is empty on the hull where a name would go.
Expect to see some newbie questions, especially on rigging, in the CP 16 forum.

Welcome! I have the same boat, same year. I bought mine in 2011, and she's still without a name. I'm in SE Michigan. I hope I can help with the newbie questions, but I still feel like total novice.

When choosing a name, you can use this link to verify if anyone else is also using it: http://www.st.nmfs.noaa.gov/st1/CoastGuard/VesselByName.html ("Please re-do your selection..." means you're the first.) A Google search offers many nautical rituals on naming/re-naming. My CP16 - purchased mere weeks ago - will get Walt Grace on the hull after I pay for some essentials.
I already have several IOUs to pay back to this forum - extremely helpful and friendly shipmates! So ask away.

That is a great area for sailing. You have the Chesapeake Bay on one side and the Choptank River on the other side. I have been up the Choptank a few times. You can backdoor St. Michaels, go to Oxford, or Cainbridge. They are great cruising grounds. You are also a days sail from Solomon's Island.
I should be out cruising the bay at the end of this month. I am out of the Potomac River.
Welcome. If you have any bay questions I will try to answer them. This has been my cruising grounds since I was very young.
That's just for documented vessels. Doubt he'll be documenting a CP16 :)

Well done on your acquisition, the CP-16 is a great little boat.
I'm sure the family will come round to the same view as yourself. Sometimes it just takes a while!

I'm just seeing your post. I really love the St. Michaels and Tilghman island area. I try to make the Small Craft Festival every other year or so. A wonderful area.
As far as naming your boat, it can take some time for the boat to reveal her name to you but she will. Enjoy the fall sailing down there!

Love the area! Many fond memories of Harrison's Chesapeake House and fishing with Capt. Buddy. The Bay was a part of my life and sailing since I was a kid. The Eastern Shore still remains a mostly unspoiled gem for sailing! ;D

Chuck, I enjoyed looking through the registry, and I'm leaning toward Sunday Mast, since we'll mainly be sailing weekends (and possibly missing church at the time). Fun to look through the names there. Bob23, you have relieved some pressure, so I am likely to give it more time before the name is finalized.
Craig, Harrison's is a fixture where we've enjoyed many crabcakes and crab imperial.
My grandmother lived near Reedville, VA, and I have fond memories of catching blue crabs and learning to clean them, as well as my grandmother running her powerboat aground while cruising the Little Wicomico River. I'm excited for exploring the far side of the bay, and rebuilding my sailing experience.
Two decades ago I crewed a 41' Morgan Out Island from Charleston to Jacksonville and back, which makes me think I know more than I really do. So many memories, waking up as we ran aground, and then waiting ~8 hours from the tide to fully go out and come back in before we got free, several diesel engine failures (it liked to fry alternators), enduring 4-6' seas in the ocean causing us to spend a lot of time in the ICW (learning red right returning or going North on ICW), ripping the mainsail along a reef point (those tough seas), getting a "tingly" feeling while touching the engine block and an exterior valve when the shore electrical supply wasn't connected properly (wrong fitting jammed into the shore power socket). Hopefully I won't have the same learning experiences, as we can learn from each other here (and I've been reading a lot of older posts).
