In what forum should I put a request in to see if anyone in the group knows of a certain boat on craig's list? I am searching for a CP 16 II. I am not sure if I should be in classified or the CP 16 section. Thanks

Duckie, what are your thoughts on the boat you found posted in Tomahawk, Wisconsin? I have made contact with the seller, but have not talked with him yet. What would be some good questions to ask. I fear soft floors and keels with water in them. The boat looks like it was last registered in Louisiana. It has been listed since July 6th. Thanks.

I don't know about this one. I think this guy is a commercial outfit. There is also a CP 19 for sale listed. When I decided to buy a boat instead of building another one, I bought a book about inspecting and buying a used sailboat. I think it was a great investment. I learned about common problems with production boats and what mattered and what didn't. When I bought mine I spent a fair amount of time looking for damage or neglect. I ended up missing a couple things, but they weren't a big deal. After my first year with the boat I would recommend that you look for leaks, then look for leaks some more. Look for impact damage in the form of dents that can be hard to see and spider cracks that have a definite pattern to them. Look at the mast to make sure it is straight and not corroded or dented. Com-Pacs give one a feeling of being solid. If this one doesn't feel like that, I dunno, maybe there is something to that.
I love my boat, but not the trailer. I think the factory trailers are not stout enough for our northern roads. Look at the trailer very carefully. When you consider that your boat could be completely lost if the trailer fails, it really is a big deal. Check to see if the tongue has been bent to one side. Check for loose fittings and mounts. Tires can be easily replaced but trailer repairs can be tricky and expensive.
I paid a good bit more for my CP 16 III than they are asking for this one, but it came pretty well tricked out. This one looks like a basic boat with what you would need to go sailing without too much additional equipment. If it hasn't been beaten up and the trailer is okay, it guess it is worth a drive over to look.

Thank you, good advise. I will probably make the trip and look at both boats. It will be a beautiful drive across northern Wisconsin. I will let you know what happens.

Saiboatlistings.com lists a CP 16XL for $3500. It looks great and the price is very good. About 700 miles from you.
I think that is the boat in Bay City, Michigan. It does look great and I spoke with the owner, he is very nice. It is too far to travel right now. I would love to go, but peace must be kept in the family.
