I thought about you when I heard that the shooting was at Smith Mountain Lake, but I had no idea until now that your wife was injured!
So sorry to hear that. Hope she recovers quickly and has no residual effects.

Just adding my concern and hope for a speedy recovery for your wife, Tim.

Tim,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I was following this story all day here in Raleigh, but never dreamed there was a direct impact on our Com-Pac community.
Tim and Vicki, So very sorry to hear about what happened! Praying for you!
Terry
Tim, the picture you provided the media with Vicki and Buddy aboard your CP19 brought tears to our eyes.
Sending good healing Karma to Vicki and strength to you, Buddy and your families.
Tim,
I just saw this evening's local news. Our prayers are with you and Vicky. I am available if there is anything I can do to help. About an hour away.

How horrid that such things happen, in this case particularly to the Compac Community. Wishing for the best outcome out of this nightmare.

Although I have never met you in person I feel that I know you from your frequent posts. We are all part of the ComPac family and therefore all part of this painful experience. My best wishes for a speedy recovery and for a soon to be relaxing sail. My thoughts and prayers to you both.
In our prayers as well,
Words always seem inadequate. You, your wife Vicki, your family, and the families of the other victims are in my prayers.

Somehow we've lost our north star! Let's pray to God for help and healing.
Tim, Linda and I just saw this thread and are praying for you and Vicki. Vicki has a strong soul and that will serve her well both physically and mentally!

I am sorry for your bad fortune but we will keep you in our prayers and thoughts. As we were watching tonight's evening news I saw the picture of Vicki on a sailboat and thought ooohh a sailor, then I saw this thread and found out it's one of us. I wish Vicki a speedy recovery and hope for strength for both of you.

CLR 2015 "Skyrocket"
Just in from CNN, Vicki has been upgraded to "good" condition. The bullet grazed her spine. She actually walked to the ambulance - tough girl!
Marty K.
My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time.

Good Lord, this is nuts. I heard about this incident going on (especially since I am a LEO in Virginia).
I hope that everything is okay with her. It is a senseless tragedy. Prayers for a good recovery.
Tim, although we have only crossed paths once in "real" life, your constant presence on this site and shared interest in sailing makes you seem like an old friend.. it was quite a shock when I realized the connection while reading the news this morning.. surely, you know that a host of friends as well as acquaintances and even many folks who don't even know you are shocked by the news and, like Janet and I, are sending well wishes and positive thoughts in your direction.. jt
Okay folks,
Here's the 411- Vicki had a second surgery this morning. Surgeon says it went extremely well. Prognosis is a full recovery in two to three months. She was shot in the back with the bullet grazing her L1 & L2 transverse radials on the right side. She lost a kidney, and part of her colon. Maintenance and repair surgery reconnected her parts.
Thanks for the support. I guess it's true, you can't be a pirate, with all of your parts.
Tired, going to bed.
TG
Hi Tim,
I heard about your wife being shot, and saw her and you on TV this morning. I'm happy that the prognosis is good, and that they expect a full recovery. Our prayers are with you both as you work through this horrible situation.

Tim,
I too am sorry and praying for a speedy recovery for Vicki.
Best wishes to you and Vicki, Tim.
I was having dental work done yesterday (in NC) and the assistant said she wasn't going back home this weekend because of all the reporters that would be around. Turns out she and her husband are from there and she knew the father of the reporter who died. Then I get home and find out your wife was also a victim. This is all too real.
Here's hoping for a steady return to as much normality as you can find.
Jon
tim, before you know it you will be hearing that infectious laugh of hers. wish we weren't so far away. you are always in our thoughts. steve and sarah
So sorry and shocked Tim to learn about this on Fox today [8-28-2015].
I have no words.
It's not important but why was Vicki being interviewed?
Prayers for your wife, Vicki, you and the family.
Now the healing begins.
CNN reports Vicki walked to the ambulance. Is that good news?

Tim,
It was not until I recognized you in an interview on the news that I realized that it is your wife, Vicki, who was shot. I am thinking of both of you and keeping positive thoughts for her recovery.
I believe I speak with many on this website when I say that although we have never met, I feel as if you are a friend because, through your many posts on this website, you have taught me much about my own Com-Pac. Your detailed comments and creative ideas have resulted in enhanced enjoyment of the boat I love. This is what a friend does. It is not surprising to see several pages of posts supporting you and Mrs. Gardner from so many members of the CPYOA community. Clearly you have many friend here who care and want you to know it.

Must have really been hard for Tim to speak to reporters when all his thoughts and energies are focused on Vikki but he is spot on with his remarks. We have become a society where it is NEVER the fault of the person doing a despicable, evil thing; it's not the person's fault when they commit a crime or injure innocent people. It's the (insert whomever the perpetrator is blaming or the gun's fault or the gun laws fault, etc, etc.). When we stop holding people accountable for small things they no longer feel they should be responsible for big things. I know I am in danger of breaking the rules for no political discussions on this board (and that's not what I am trying to do) but one of our own has been taken down in a senseless act and I am both saddened and sickened by it. As sailors we are always responsible for what we do or don't do to keep our boat, passengers and those around us safe; I just wish the rest of society did the same
Tim and Vicki,
This is such a shock. I never made the connection as I was catching bits and pieces of the news. Suzie and I send our thoughts and prayers to you and wish for a speedy recovery. We had actually discussed coming to SML for the wine festival in Sept. I know that you and Vicki were a major players for organizing that event. I am lost for words......
Best to you both,

Well said.
Tim and Vicki,
We saw the some coverage of this incident on the news down here over the last couple of days, mainly concerning the reporter and cameraman who were killed. Then this morning the news had you being interviewed, this was the first time we realised that there was another victim who had been critically injured but had survived, but it wasn't until I logged on to here that I realised just who it was that had been so terribly injured.
Evalyn and I of course don't know you and Vicki personally, only through your presence on the website and via our shared interest in sailing. However such is the power of social media like this website that we do feel a connexion.
We send our best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery to Vicki, and also to you and all the others in your community affected by this tragedy.

Hello to all the Com-Pac-O-Nauts
Vicki was up and walked around the ICU for about an hour today. Wore her out, big time.
We want to thank you for the good wishes all y'all are sending our way. Even Australia!
Her next challenge will be to go forward to bend on the Asym.
Thanks guys, really.

This is great news, Tim! Please be sure to give her my best- I so much enjoyed meeting her at CLR 2015 and really love her unique sense of humor. Just looking at some photos from the post race hydration session- I have a few good ones of her floating around, dog in her lap and a drink in each hand! Still supporting you both!!!

Great news Tim! Our prayers have been answered!
this is such a relief!
WOW....just catching this now. So sorry to hear....SO happy it is turning out OK!
Glad that she is up and walking. A scary-life changing event I'm sure.......
Hope the recovery continues to go great !
Great news, Tim. Barb and I are thrilled that she's doing well. Hope we can all get together soon. Maybe if the SML rendezvous is postponed, we possibly can do a BBB-2015.1 at SML.

Beverly and I would like to add our best wishes and prayers for you, your wife and Buddy the Sea Dog. We hope that Vicki had a speedy uncomplicated recovery.
Have been sailing away from home and news for the past three weeks. Heard about the shooting from a dock master a few days back, but did not realize that it involved you all until I read 'the Blog'.
Again our thoughts are with you.

After selling Pooka I check in here once in awhile to be sure you are all doing well. I was completely shocked to read this.
Tim I wish you and Vicki all the best.
Yay Vicki!

Some updates: Excerpted from Vicki's Recovery Page on Facebook.
Aug 30: Vicki got a lot of rest today after doing a couple laps around the ICU (she placed 1st in her age group). Her doctors and nurses say that she is the poster child for bullet wound recovery. She remained cool and calm while having her surgical wounds redressed, a process that the nurses claim to have made "tough, tattooed, and proud men send echoing cries across the trauma floor." We are so proud of her endurance and strength.
Aug 31:
Vicki spent most of her day attempting to sleep because it seems she is trying to adopt a nocturnal lifestyle. The nurse wants her to sleep better at night, so we tortured her with corny jokes and what she considered barbaric physical therapy. According to her nurse, the more she complains about being uncomfortable, the better she is recovering- so we tried to speed up the process with our relentless Gardner poking and teasing. Based on our results the outlook looks good.
smile emoticon
Also, she is LOVING all of the positive encouragement that is being sent both online and in writing. Your comments are fun to read when we are trying to keep her occupied. If you have a funny Vicki story, send it in a message and we'll read it to her this week. Thank you!!
Tim, Jacqui and Erin and all of the spouses and begats of the family
Just opened this thread for the first time and was shocked to learn that someone in the Compac community was involved in this terrible tragedy. I'm sorry for your misfortune.
So glad that your wife seems to be on the mend. Sending good thoughts and best wishes.
Have been traveling, my first look at the forum since last Wed. In fact I listened to the reports of the incident on the radio while driving to Florida. Had no idea it impacted one of our own. Tim, my thoughts and prayers for a rapid recovery for Vickie are with you folks. So sorry this happened.
Prayers go out for the fast recovery of Vicki. Thoughts and prayers also to the families of the two young persons who life ended too soon.
Just back and opened this thread.
Horrified to learn that one of the ComPac Crew was hurt in the shooting. Glad to hear Vicki is progressing well. Our thoughts are with you.
Best Wishes.

This was taken at this years CLR where Vicki displayed her unique sense of humor (even if her choice of friends can be questioned!) This is the Vicki I met and the one we are all looking forward to seeing again! Why she would ever want to risk her reputation by having a photo taken with some curmudgeonly old fart is beyond me!!!
Get well soon, Vicki: CLR 2016 is just around the corner and we need you there!!!
Blessings to you,
Bob23
i feel pretty bad now---as she refused to have a picture taken with me. maybe it was the catalina (a boat that won the big clr cup---hahaha). get well sweetheart,
Kick:
Don't feel bad...I had to bribe Vicki with big cash for her to pose for that pic. You think she'd ruin her reputation for nothing???
BOB, BOB, BOB BOB BOB,
I told you not to talk about how the Admiral requires honoraria. That's a two finger fine for you, my friend!
Hey, it's all among family, TG! Really nice to see all the pics of the recovering Vicki on her page. I have a great one on my camera of her floating with buddy on her lap and a drink in each hand!! Priceless!!
I follow the FB pages as well, and was so glad to see the pics of her today (I check it occasionally, so the pics might have been from last few days) and was very glad to see smiling.
I have prayed for her, and her recovery. Ginger and I have talked and compared what we have read staying up with the recovery. Tell her for us to keep up the good work!
We are like a big family here! Which is so awesome to me!
Mac and Ginger
Well Ls & Gs, I'm happy to let you all know that the Admiral resumed command today, but remains on light duty.
Her command post is our first floor guest bedroom so she doesn't have to climb stairs. But rest assured her orders are heard loud and clear.
That's great news!!!! Glad she is home and doing well. Hope the progress continues!!!
WOW!!! THIS IS GREAT NEWS!!! Give her a big (maybe not too big) hug from me!!!!
FANTASTIC!
Praise the Lord for her recovery. Always great to be home. I bet her little puppy is happy. I cannot remember his name.
Thinking of you

Tim,
That is so wonderful to hear Vicki was home for the holiday! You both are still in our thoughts and prayers.

We were pleased to see on national TV in Australia this morning that Vicki had been released from hospital and allowed to go home to continue her recovery. Great news indeed! You are all still in our thoughts and prayers.

not a day goes by that we don't think about you-----
Noticed it's been a couple of days since anyone has posted so didn't want Tim or Vikki to feel like; Ok, that's over so let's move on.....! I'm sure many of us are still concerned for Vikki as her recovery continues. And Tim, we hope you are taking care of yourself so you can continue to be strong for Vikki. Don't let yourself get run down as we head into cold and flu season.
Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with you both
Bob & Linda Tudor
Nah, not to worry, I'm sure Tim and Vicki know that our thoughts are pretty much always with them. I for one, am anxious for Vicki to have made a full recovery and back in the saddle (or maybe at the tiller!).
For some selfish reasons, I look forward to the SML-CPR whenever that happens.
Marty K.
P.S. As I write this, CNN is airing Vicki's FOX's interview.
Don't know why I'm so late to this post (well, yeah I do, been on the road a month), but thoughts are with you and prayers for continued, full recovery.
Well Ls&Gs,
I'm happy to report that the Admiral is on the mend and issuing orders on the bells as one would expect of one with 40 years at the helm.
She is still on light duty, having good days and some not so good, but every day I get to remind her I'm not in charge, but in control of the relative bearing, I count as a great day.
Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers,
TG
Fantastic news, Tim!!!!
Great to hear the recovery continues!! Life can change quickly....too quickly at times. Happy that the "voyage" continues. I'm sure it's been a life changer for both of you. While the thoughts and prayers have rightfully been directed toward Vicki....I'm sure it's been one @&;& of an emotional roller coaster for you Tim. Honestly couldn't imagine. Hope you are holding up as well. Fair winds to both of you!!!
Well Ls & Gs,
The Admiral and I returned home from the Carilion Clinic today sans any obtrusive tubes into the Admirals abdomen. Yay.
Her abdomen wound has healed sufficiently enough to require no more wet dressings.
I'm no longer required to be the sick bay corpsman to change dressings. In three weeks, we return to the hospital to discuss the reversal of her ostomy. Sooner rather then later if we're going to be able to attend the midwinter gathering.
Thanks for all of your personal prayers and well wishes.
More when I am not celebrating as much. Dark and Stormy hiccups!
TG
Tim,
Although we've never met, I want you to know that my prayers are for the "Admiral's" full recovery.

Tim,
Thanks for the updates and great news!!! We are happy to hear that her progress continues well. What a treat it would be to also meet Vicki at this years MWG. I hear Marty and Bob have found a special location.........

An update, Folks!
Vicki has been scheduled or reversal of her Illiostomy on Dec 1st, and if all goes as well as expected after a 3-4 day stay back in the hospital, she will be on the last leg of recovery over this winter.
We have been very graciously invited in a random act of kindness by the staff of the Margaritaville organization to attend the New Years Eve Jimmy Buffet concert in NYC, so we are traveling by train on the 30TH of Dec. & will spend a few days there.
We are looking forward to getting back out on the water very soon thereafter.
Regards, TG
Tim: This is great news! What sort of bribe would it take for you to stop in NJ on the way back?
Sounds like great news Tim and Vicki. Continual progress is the way to go. I will keep you both in my thoughts and prayers for a full recovery.
Dan
Thats great!! Good to hear Vicky will be on her way to final recovery.
I'm sure you both will truly enjoy the concert.
Fitting as well....there will be a few sailing songs thrown in.
Have fun!!
Tim and Vicky,
Glad to hear the situation is improving so dramatically. We wish you both the best. Enjoy the Buffet concert! Maybe we'll see you there!
Very pleased to hear that good progress continues, fingers crossed for the next step for you both.

Sweet news!
All the best to you & Vicki!

Truly great to hear, hoping for continued progress toward full recovery. Enjoy the concert.
Good news! I'm happy to report Vicki is out of correcting abdominal surgery tonight, and is resting comfortably (thanks to some medication). The procedure to put things back where they are supposed to be was successful. She was surgery for 3 hrs. & recovery another three. We're keeping fingers crossed that all soon gets back to near normal. Thanks for all the good wishes and answered prayers all y'all have put up for us.
Feels like we've been hove-to for the past three months. We're both looking forward to a nice leisurely sail in another few.

It's great her plumbing is back in order. Hope and pray Vicki has a full recovery. Keep us informed. See both of you at CLR next year.

Great news, Tim - thanks!

Great news! Thank you for sharing, and let Vicki know we're rooting for her continued recovery.
Tim and Vicki,
I'm new to the Compac site (just bought an eclipse in Nov), but I recall with horror the shooting Vicki was involved in. Senseless, just plain senseless.
So happy to hear that recovery for the two of you seems to be going well.
Our best wishes to both of you,

Just watched the segment. Amazed and inspired by how Vickie can look back at the event and emphasize the most positive aspects of a very traumatic experience.
Saw the clip when surfing CNN this morning. I'm sure you feel blessed that things turned out as well as they did.
My wife had several brain surgeries in the 90s, then battled cancer about 5 yrs ago. All successful. I now feel that every day we have together is a GIFT.
Hope to meet you someday on the water.

Here's an update to the Admiral's recovery from her gunshot wound last year.
Vicki continues to regain her endurance. It's been a slow slog, but her Dr. warned us it could easily take two years.
She is still working reduced hours as the Executive Director of the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce here in Virginia.
We are in the midst of the best season for sailing on this lake and we go as often as the wind will allow.
To wit: Last Saturday:

Hey Tim and Vickie, what a special place that lake is, and yes the sailing has been great this fall! Keep us posted with the trip to lower latitudes and hope you will come together this winter for the CBMWG 2.0! Will be an honor. :)
Such courage and poise. I hope that she is continuing to get community support for Vickie's Vision. Is there anything that a member of this CP community can do in support of that?
