Progress continues unabated - except for coming across a mysterious device on the backstay. Before I decide it's a lodestone moderator, or an umbrella holder, can anyone suggest a real-life use for this please ?

oh goody ! thanks for the info. I must now rush out and get a tarp. I guess it must serve to create a 'tent' over the cockpit in case the sun ever shines in the UK.

A boom tent or Boom holder-upper when the main sail is not in use.
