Just wondering, I have a Johnson 4hp Sail Master engine on my CP 16. I'm thinking about updating to a Tohatsu 4hp, should I get a short or long shaft engine?
Long shaft, that way if you go to a larger boat, you can take the new motor with you. I have the tohatsu 3.5 long, hardly get off idle and I am at cruising speed. Only compliant is that I have to put the motor into the vertical position for a few minutes before it will start easily. If I tilt it down and start immediately she takes 20 pulls maybe. Seems about three minutes or so does it. Anyone else notice a problem like this on the fourstrokers???
i just happen to have an '09 tohatsu 4hp/4 stroke long shaft for sale.
brand new carb and tune up this spring.
serviced by a factory authorized dealer, hasn't been used since.
has the internal fuel tank and a 3 gallon auxiliary tank.
factory installed alternator and leads with a 2 prong flat plug.

I am running a 4hp Nissan (Tohatsu). Nice motor if you can keep the gas system clean. Also good to have a reverse gear. However, I think the 4HP Tohatsu is 18-20 pounds heavier than the 2 stroke Sail Pro. That is a difference to consider hanging off the stern of a CP-16.

Thanks for your responses, I was hoping to get a motor with reverse , we keep the boat at a marina so it would be handy. Is there an outboard out there with reverse that wouldn't add so much weight?
I really like my long shaft, 4hp, 4 stroke, F-N-R, Tohatsu. I bought it on line, really cheap and free shipping. Just "google" it.

I have a long shaft on my 2hp Honda with a raised mounting board on the OB bracket so the prop sits in the water about as deep as it would with a short shaft on an unmodified bracket.
The powerhead is up higher which helps keep it dry and it is easier to operate because the tiller handle can be positioned all the way down in a horizontal position.
I like this setup so I vote for long shaft

i have a mercury 4 hp long shaft on my catalina 18. only problem i had was a clogged filter on the fuel line under the hood. replaced it and it runs fine. a bit of a shaker being a single cylinder but quiet and sips gas.

I installed oar locks on mine. The C16 rows nicely. Now the motor is optional.
