Hello, I am looking to replace my sails and I'm wondering what company would be a good choice.I've priced them through Compac, Peak Sails, and National Sails. Also what is a good choice as far as material ?

I went with National and tanbark (red). It only came in one weight and was more expensive, but I really liked the look and National's service.

I have Doyle's from http://www.doylesails.com/lofts/ploch/
They will send you measurement forms and talk to you about your sailing area, boat, and how you sail. You will get a quote. I suggest you do this with several other sail lofts and compare your options. I would look at the major players North, UK, Doyle, Hood, Quantum, there are also some that specialize in one designs that might offer you a good price and good product as well including Mad, Ullman, Sobstad etc...
As far as sail material, what did the lofts recommend for you? They should suggest the appropriate material at the appropriate weight based on your sailing conditions and needs. Btw, you get what you pay for when it comes to sails, generally the more you pay the better the shape and the better the performance. Best of luck.
Charlie and Matt, thanks for your replys. I ordered a set from National Sails, I'll be sure to post my thoughts on them after we've tested them out. I bought our boat a couple years ago and I'm pretty certain it still has the original Johnson Sails on it.
It has the roll up furling for the genoa, is that most likely a 150 genoa? Compac no longer offers a 150.

Eric - mind if I ask what you paid? I'm thinking of getting new sails for my '83 cp 16, but not sure if they're in my budget.

I think it was $640.00 for both sails.
Eric, how bad are they? Mine were pretty nasty looking. I sent them to SailCare in PA and for $200 with shipping I recieved what look like new sails. Call them and ask if yours can be rehabbed.
Don't even think about it....call National.

I would only restore mine as back up sails, my thought is that the fabric is getting stretched out on them, especially the main sail which has been repaired about six times near the top. I'll probably patch them up myself and put the money saved towards the new sails, which should be coming along soon.
Back up to what??? Why would you ever keep a set of blown out sails??????
i think sarah is going to make something out of ours-----but not a sail----im thinking pillow cases

In case something should happen to one of the newer ones, at least I could still sail. It takes 4 weeks to get sails made.
I bet you could get an extra new main close to the same price as conditioning the old sails if you order at the same time. If you are just keeping the old sails and not getting work done on them, then that makes sense but that is not as how I think of a "backup". My interpretation of backup means something bad happens on the water and I have to go to the backups to get me somewhere safe, in that case, the weather that crapped out my good stuff is likely to tear up my worn out backup...so...I like my backup to be every bit as good as my primary after all it is getting used at the worst of times. this is especially true with old line, we all keep it for just in case, but that is the time you generally need the best you can get! But I understand where you are coming from, Best of luck.
