Any help appreciated for finding a foiled rudder for my old 1981 compac 23....... very open to ideas

I think that I heard of a few people on here turning their original rudder into a foiling rudder. I am not sure I am technical enough to pull that off.

If not into DIY Rudder Craft sells just the blade or the whole kick up rudder system. You can also buy a foiled blade from Compac as they are now standard on current boats.

I turned my standard blade into a wood foiled rudder. It was a lot of work but had held up well and really enhanced the performance- higher pointed higher and seemed a bit faster, although that could be my imagination. It didn't cost all that much but was very labor intensive.

Actually, it did cost a bit. I forgot about the 1/8" Okoume plywood I ordered from Chesapeake Light Craft. Everything else was purchased at Home Cheepo or scrap I had laying around. But I have enough Okoume left for 2 more blades, not that I plan to build another one. I have construction photos if you or anyone wants to see them or them might still be on my Koinonia thread here.
I originally designed a downhaul line for this blade but his year I purchased a stainless hold down bracket from Compac. Because the wood blade is foam, it likes to float and the downhaul doesn't keep it quite all the way down, resulting in some weather helm, the bane of all 23 guys.

Mike,just saw your post.I did a search and read all the posts on this site and made my own.Wasn't that hard and a lot of fun.Cost was minimal.Give it a try.Whats the worst that can happen?

But to answer yu, the worst thing that can happen if I try to fabricate my own rudder is ; I make a mess on the patio and wife gets real mad, I take too long to get boat
in the water , and wife/friends get mad !
I do alot of my own work on boat but think I gotta pay to get this one done.
The boat project was put on hold.A home remod turned into a major rebuild(carpenter ants and rot)Finally done and back on the boat.I need life lines also and looking at the synthetic.A good source for lifeline hardware is Marinedepot on-line,I've dealt with them before and no problems,very good prices.I don't know if your familiar with Thomas Hardware,it's an old-school rigging shop on the east-side(Mack Ave in Grosse Point).If you just want to replace the existing the lifelines,take the old ones in with you.I've bought cordage from them at great prices and they're very knowledgeable.The entertainment value is worth the drive(like I said old-school).
