Title: Shower drain hint
Post by: frank on March 27, 2015, 09:26:04 PM
The 27's head drains directly to the bilge with the only "filter" being the SS drain cap on the lowest section of the heads floor. Once, while travelling on a larger boat, the sump would not drain. A search found a drain filter that could be taken out and cleaned. I was amazed at the amount of hair that had collected. So, before using Allure's shower, I cut a peace of window screen to fit and put it under the SS drain cap. Easy job. Since being solo aboard for about 2-1/2 mths, I've cleaned it 4-5 times and replaced it once. Geez....where does all that hair come from. I guess we all shed and us male's also shed leg hair. I could only imagine how much more there would be with another person or a women with longer hair. The point of this post is that if you use your 27's shower a lot...the screen is well worth it. All that hair would go directly to the bilge and directly into your bilge pump. I would have to assume, through time, this would drastically effect the operation of the pump or possibly even cause failure. I was shocked at how much built up so  quickly with just me aboard and my hair is relatively short. A cheap/easy solution that could save problems later.

Great idea!  I will install the screen next week.

Our  '86 C-27 Windrunner, originally a charter boat CINDI-CATE (get it) had a pump out for the shower.  I think that the original drain was covered and a small through hull type fitting leading to the real starboard seat locker, where there was an electric pump to an over board discharge.  The pump was activated by a manual switch in the head.

After reading your post I may hook it back up, or install a screen.

Thanks for your post.
