Title: battery maintainer location
Post by: Tney88 on March 20, 2015, 12:45:10 PM
Where do folks have their battery maintainer mounted?  Mine was installed on the outer side of the plywood divider between the starboard lazarette and the engine, and is in the way when I want to remove that divider to access the starboard side of the Westerbeke, where most of the service items like the oil filter and raw water impeller are located.  I'm going to relocate the maintainer, just looking for suggestions of where to re-mount it.

Mine is located under the stairs and to the port side on the wall.  Will try to get a pic posted this weekend if you need it.

Hey Tney88:
Mine is on the port side.  Accessible through the port cockpit locker.  Mounted on the bulkhead about 6-8 inched below the deck as far to the outside (port side) as I could get it.  The water pump is underneath.  I too will try to get you a picture.

Hey Terry:
Here are a couple of flicks.  The grey switch box is the back of the 110vac plug in the galley above the icebox.  The battery minder itself is plugged into the GFCI on the left side of the pictures.  I did not do the wiring.  The PO included the minder shown here, I just installed it and replaced the GFCI.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks, Charlie.  That helps a lot.  Mine is mounted in the opposite lazarette, and is screwed onto the outboard side of that plywood panel alongside the engine.  That's the side of the engine that has the oil filter, the dipstick, and the raw water impeller.  I'd really like to make that panel easier to remove....I'm thinking of a slide-in system so it drops in like a hatch board, so when I'm doing service work I can just slide it up and out and have unrestricted access to all those items. I couldn't just move it to the bulkhead on the starboard side, as that is the brown water tank....screwing things into that tends to have bad side effects!  So this looks like a good solution.

Hey Terry good call!

I have nothing mounted on either of the two plywood panels on the port and starboard side of the engine except a place to slide my drop boards.  In the first picture you can just see the top of that rack by the bottom of the flag.  It is very convenient  to take both of the plywood panels out to do work on the engine, fuel / water systems, and especially the stuffing box and shaft assembly.  The extra space is super critical for me since I do not bend or fit into small spaces as well as I used to!

Frank, what type of auto-helm do you have?
