Title: solid rod for bowsprite
Post by: chuckm on January 19, 2015, 05:36:48 PM
I read some where that somebody had a solid rod for the lower shroud under the bow sprite. Can someone tell me if this is a custom job or can I get it "off the shelf"?

For what model? They are stock on some models(Horizon Cats have them). A call to Compac will get a quick answer and they could probably make one for any Compac with a bowsprit.

If ComPac cant help you out, you could measure and have White Water Marine make you one. Just remember you need the bow sprit to maintain a proper line for the boat to maintain its looks.

Are you talking about a solid "bobstay" ?

Bobstay is the correct term for what Chuck  is referring to. Tnx.

Thanks to all for the info. So I am looking for a solid bobstay, got it. MacGyver, good point on maintaining the correct line I was thinking of proper mast rake but didn't think of looks.

Just wondering why a solid rod bobstay? On my CP23 I replaced my damaged original with a length 0f SS chain. It looks sweet and last season I bumped into the dock with it (someone must have moved the dock) and bounced right off. OK, I wasn't going very fast, but I wonder how much abuse a solid bobstay could stand?

I've got a home-made bowsprit, and there's a cable down to the bow-eye. It takes up room there so that it is hard to hook the trailer winch to the bow eye when I haul the boat. I have wondered if I should get whatever the fitting is and re-install or replace the bobstay.

Tom:
I was thinking of doing the exact same thing! Thought the look would be great and, considering I have the original bobstay, it's ready for a replacement. Can you post or email any photos? Thanks,
Bob23
(I hate when they  move those docks. I had the same problem with pilings that reach out and grab the boat while backing out of a slip. They were probably formally trees that would jump in front of my car when I was a younger driver!)

Bob,
I could probably sail to your house and show you the bobstay faster than I could figure out how to post a photo. My daughter has promised to help, but she is several years behind in her promises.  Believe me, you will love the way it looks!  Just take a piece of 1/4" anchor chain and a few plastic wire ties, hang the chain on your old bobstay and stand back.... it just looks so salty you can almost taste it!

Tom, as to why I wanted a solid bobstay that's simple I never thought of SS chain. Sounds like a great idea. You also make a good point on the ability to flex and recover after a bump. Thanks for the fresh look at this.

I used all 1/4" SS chain and shackles.  No turnbuckle. The old bobstay gave me the approximate length, but before I cut the chain I stood the mast and made sure I had adjustment room on the forestay and backstay turnbuckles.  It has worked out just fine and really tickles that old pirate deep inside of me -- almost as good as having a patch over one eye!
