I've had my eye out for a homeless Compac 16 that I can adopt and call my own. If you have a 16 that you're thinking of selling, or one that doesn't like you anymore, or know of one that's stored in your neighbors barn, let me know. Being up front, I'm looking to spend as little as possible and trying to find a fixer upper that I can trailer sail and explore some local and not so local waters. I love my 23, but she's a bit rotund to be trailering all over the place. With or without trailer and/or motor. Heck, it's even ok if some of the rigging, mast and boom is missing. And I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance.
Thanks, mates!
Bob23
Good luck to you Bob23!
I too at one point was looking to get a 16, paint it like the 19, and go to other areas with it. Ginger doesnt feel that is needed, LOL! What does she know. One can never have too many boats, just not enough space to keep them!
Mac (If I was closer I would help you redo it :) )
Hey Bob23,
There's a 16 on Ebay selling out of Florida. It's currently bid at $1009 and the buy it now price is $2400 with trailer.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Com-pac-16-1981-sail-away-condition-with-trailer-/181577407254?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a46db5b16&item=181577407254&pt=Sailboats
Hopefully that link works.
I've been thinking about the same thing. I intend to keep my 23 but would like to explore other waters without the big production. Maybe a lake that doesn't have an 18" ice cap in the winter. I have to plan these things carefully so I don't get voter backlash. I already added a Pram to the fleet for the kids this summer.
-Jim23
Aww, the backlash of 7-foot-itis! Or even 3-foot-itis! Who knew the Big-Boat Guys would want to downsize and join us 16ers? Well, I know the feeling, even with a CP-16 that hasn't left the backyard in two years... Some days I think a sailing dinghy on the car roof would be really handy. 2015--the year Thankful will splash down! My husband will not allow any more boats till that happens. ;-) The kayak? Oh, that doesn't count.
Your husband sounds like my wife. What is it with these people anyway? Can't they see that there is no such thing as too many boats?
Thanks, Jim23 but I'm looking for a real beater at a beater price. I don't want to defect away from a Compac and I like the 16's. In a pinch, literally, I could overnight in it. But I really love my 23- Oh- I hope she's not reading this? She tends to get jealous at times. What's that line: Hell has no fury like a woman's scorn?
Mack: I think the 16 and 19 are both pretty easy to trailer. I know that the 23 is only about 1000 pounds heavier, but it seems like much more to launch than a 19. Btw, how's the new position?
Bob23
Bob,
The Washington Sailing Marina in Virginia, on the Potomac just downstream of Reagan Airport has about three C16's on trailers neglected for several years. One is a Mark 11 with a shredded Bimini. Possibly they could be had.
The manager of the marina, Ron Hessler, also has a Mark l on a trailer for sale. He was asking $500 three years ago but I would guess he would just about pay you to take it off of his hands; he would like to rent the storage space. I almost bought it 3 years ago but opted for a decent Mark 11 from Ohio. There is another tired CP16 on a trailer at a nearby downstream Farfax County campground at Mason's Neck. It too might be for sale. Someone is still paying storage rent on these non-Ron Hessler boats. . .
I will be going up to DC possibly this weekend. Let me know if you would like me to check to see what may still be there.
wow, Bob you have been hinting at this for quite a while... looks like you are serious! you must be anticipating a lot of free time to work on a new project! sounds like fun.. good luck.. jt
Dave:
Yes! I don't want you to go out of your way, but if you can provide updated info on any of these, that would be great! I'm in NJ, not too far to travel for a deal.
JT:
I have been keeping my eye out for a neglected 16 for a long time. I'm not looking to restore a tired boat, just give her a few more good years. There's that poor one in Tuckerton which got banged around in Sandy- I've spoken to the owners, written them letters but it still sits, rotting away year after year. Maybe I should start an adoption agency for homeless Compacs!
Bob23
Hi Bob,
I put up a list of compacs for sale on CL. I don't think any of them are what you are looking for, but maybe someone else will find their next boat on the list. It sounds like you already have a lead on some neglected 16's. I wish you luck.
Great list cw021382! You deserve a good karma point for that one. If only I could figure out how to do that for you. I'm not seeing the buttons others have talked about...probably just my inept skills.
Thanks, Chris. Now I have so many to pick from. What are you trying to do- get me murdered or divorced? or both?
Seriously, thank you.

Karma added :)
Great list!
Bob, just repeat to yourself that it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission!
i like to say "it was like that when i got here" or "it followed me home" or "its either this or i start hanging out at bars" or "would you rather i have another woman?"
I've tried all the above excuses. And she might rather I have another woman! But boats are less trouble. One excuse I've tried with limited success is to play dumb. (Linda says that's easy for me). Goes something like this: "Boat? What boat? What the...where did that come from? It wasn't here an hour ago...those darn neighborhood kids- always playing pranks."
The technique I now use is: "Just get over it, wouldja?" You guys don't know how fortunate you are to have wives who not only like sailing but are somewhat enthusiastic about it.
Bob23
bob, my sarah said that she didnt mind if i kept our 16 after we bought the catalina and i did have the two boats in the garage with that old 52 for a while. then i moved the 16 to my moms garage (she recently sold her car) but being cheap i sold the 16. i know ill miss it in a few years when im too feeble to step the mast on the catalina but im gonna postpone that as long as possible. the 16 is a fine boat but we just felt that we needed more room. good luck finding a good one. they are out there----didnt they make 4000 of them?
Steve:
I do admit that the 16's are tiny inside but I'm looking to daysail and trailer sail so I can explore different waters. I'll find one. Just like the 23, it one waits long enough, the boat finds us. Weird, huh- but most of us here know it's true.
Bob23
Bob23,
Would you be interested in Sun Cat "Frisky"? She ain't cheap, but I'm toying with selling her.
capt_nemo
While I like the Suncats, I'm looking for an el cheapo fixer upper. Why would you sell her?
Bob23,
A complex combination of several factors, not the least of which is that I'm not using the boat as much as I think I should to justify keeping it in my stable.
Meanwhile, I'll continue to press on with my current build, an 11' Kayak. Have laid out most of the parts on ply and am ready to start cutting them out. Really like building boats!
capt_nemo
bob , i think you are right when you say boats find us. when i saw com-pac 16 listed in the paper under rvs for sale i called that minute and we enjoyed 7 years with her. the catalina required a 500 mile one way trip to michigan. and after some familiarization, she has turned out to be a great fit for us. what is it about sail that causes us to name boats with female names and power boats are just things?
I've asked you if you wanted mine and you turned your nose up at it.
it's still available, let's say 750 for boat 5hp nissan and trailer.
(not inc. VHF, GPS or non-specific stuff like that).
Gee. I'm sorry but I don't recall turning my nose up at your 16. Where are you located?
Bob23
jpfx's IP address says Colorado.
TG
hey bob if you take a trip west stop in illinois and pick up rich, jason, carl and me. talk about a road trip!
i'll second steve's advice!
aint nothin like a road trip with a bunch responsible adults. and sailors to boot!
cc
Steve, Carl: The road trip is a great idea. One problem: who's gonna bail us out of jail? Sarah? Joanie? Ginger? My wife might just let me sit there for 6 months to teach me a lesson. But can you imagine the fun? It would be illegal for 5 guys to have that much fun...hence the half million dollar bail- each!
Bob23
Hey Bob:
Buy the boat sight unseen. Lily and I are going out to Denver for Christmas, we'll trailer it back for you (for the paltry sum of, what, perhaps $10 per mile??). What are friends for, right?
Elk River
Awww Brad: You would do that for me after all the grief I've given you? What a friend. There's the true Christmas spirit in action. Ten bucks for every 1000 miles- who could argue with that. Thanks!
Bob23

$500, no sails
I'm in columbia SC.
it's a good boat, the only problem was that layers of paint had been ladled on the hull which I decided to take off.
I got so far then ran out of steam/interest/enthusiasm. that leaves it down to the original gelcoat and looking unfinished.
it has an original (I think) yellow/white jib on a furler.
new-ish main, still crisp.
nissan 5hp 2005 I think, needs servicing (at the very least an impeller)
bunks have rot but are still sturdy enough to support weight. previous owner mad two epoxied boards which go under the cushions. it works well.
some mast/boom fittings I have replaced. parts came from dwyer and are exact replacements.
trailer is probably for a nineteen. very sturdy full size wheels.
pics are here http://s11.photobucket.com/user/jpfx/library/compac16 (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/jpfx/library/compac16), warts and all. some of the pictures on water were taken the last trip out. after that, I started taking the paint came off.
I'll put it back together for collection.
please note for 750 you're getting the C-16 stuff, motor and trailer - not extras. it's worth far more.
open to anyone but I guess bob has first dibs.
pics of robroy 23 which I would also like to sell here http://s11.photobucket.com/user/jpfx/library/rr23 (http://s11.photobucket.com/user/jpfx/library/rr23)
Bob, if that 16 in Rhode Island fits the bill, I have my original sails (jib and main) just sitting around in a storage box... -Justin
Justin:
What would you be asking for the sails?
