Title: why am i tempted so to bid on this?
Post by: crazycarl on July 25, 2014, 05:28:04 PM
i already own a 15' daysailer for our home waters, and of course our 19/II for larger waters.

so, why is it that when i see what could be a deal on a 16, i'm so tempted to bid?

at one point in time, i had 4 sailboats in the drive.  maybe i'm just greedy?

I have the high bid now.  Figure to donate it to the jr. sailing program at the sailing club if it doesn't go too high.

Either the auction has the year wrong, or a previous owner added the bowsprit/factory ladder, or it is a half-breed transition boat between the mark I and II. If you look in the SailingTexas archives the first 16's to show up with bowsprit and the ladder are 1986, the eBay boat is listed as a 85. But all of the 86 and newer 16's on SailingTexas have stained wood in the bow storage area while the eBay boat is either painted wood or fiberglass over wood. Is it possible they transitioned the exterior to mark II before the interior on a few of them?

At the current bid ($255), plus the $300 "document handling fee", plus some new trailer tires and lights, title transfer fees and registration (at least in MN), a used outboard, and lets say another $200 for misc you'll end up with $1,200 into the boat. Not terrible, but I'm willing the bet the sails are original and the interior smells like death.

The same organization had a boat donated to them in my town. I contacted the company and they refused to give me the address so I could go look at it or give me the owner's name so I call and inquire about it. I opted out. If it's such a good deal, then let me see it and touch it before I own it!

Boat Angel has had some poor dealings at our marina as well. including one that I think they saw it and then dumped it on us, cause it was JUNK........
