Title: Neuse River rendezvous this fall?
Post by: BruceW on July 22, 2014, 08:25:34 AM
I enjoyed the early summer get together, and I know there were others interested who couldn't make that one.

If someone wants to try again, I'll see if I can join in this fall.

I'm just putting this out there; maybe a rendezvous will spontaneously form! haha

Blue Heaven, a 19/2, is still on it's trailer recovering from the BBB  2014.  We are in MD at the DE line, but could be convinced to join in as it is less than 500 miles.  I'll be watching for some prospective dates.

If this idea of a rendezvous gets up a head of steam (now why would a sailor use that analogy, I wonder?), our October weekends are pretty much committed.  November is all open except for T-day weekend.  December doesn't really qualify as a Fall Rendezvous, I suppose.  As we are from 'away', please don't let us set the date agenda if you local folks are able to have at it earlier.

I'd join in if possible, and November looks like it for me too.

My new to me 27 will be in the yard over Nov. but the old 23 will be willing if we can fit the date.

It sounds as though a get-together may gel, after all.  Is the ramp at the  "new" marina park suitable to get a 19 in and out of the water?  I am thinking of the one at the foot of the bridge in New Bern that has some finger piers, on the river side of the road, next to the hotel.  I know there is another ramp on the other side of the bridge, up the Trent a little bit, but don't know how that is for launching, either.  Any suggestions on either ramp, perhaps one being better than the other, and is weekend parking O.K. at both?

     Thanks,

     Elk River

Hey Elk:
I have launched and recovered a C-16 at both ramps by the hotel at the point.  I recall that ramp on the left, facing the ramps, is deeper. If you would like I could take a depth measurement at the end of the piers by the ramps.

Earlier this year, I called City of New Bern Parks and Recreation to inquire about leaving a vehicle/boat trailer at either Union Point ramp or Lawson Creek ramps and was told overnight parking was not permitted. I called Galley Stores and Marina, several hundred yards down from Union Point ramp and was told there is a lot beside them where a vehicle could be left overnight but they would not be held responsible for it. Therefore you could unload your boat at Union Point, drive your vehicle to beside Galley Stores and Marina, and walk back to Union Point to your boat.

Another option I found (according to Keith at Sailboat Company in Richlands) is to unload at Northwest Creek Marina. Again, ramp is one area but you must park in another.

Hope this helps!

Years ago, I used the NW Creek ramp and parked over by the marina; it's a longer drive over after launching than the walk back. They have changed dockmasters, and I don't know if they still ignore cars in the lot.

Thank you, gentlemen, for the replies.  Several thoughts arise:  Is New Bern the place we should we should use a launching/departure point?  Do most of you hail from that area so it is also convenient for you?  If not, should we consider another launching area?  Does anyone know offhand if there is a charge for the ramp at Union Point?  Can the finger piers be used overnight or would we need to anchor out?  Perhaps I can contact the Parks & Recreation myself, but I thought I would throw these ideas out there.

I do not want to appear to be taking this over from anyone, but as no firm date has been mentioned, may I suggest the weekend of 8 - 9 Nov?  We could use Friday as a travel & launch day, sail Sat. & Sun., and use Monday as a travel day back to MD (assuming, of course, I can sweet talk or otherwise convince my wife to shift her work schedule a day).  The closer it gets to Thanksgiving, the tougher it might be for people to get away for a weekend.

Perhaps the only other question at the moment is what fold-out type of chart of the area would I need?

     Thanks,

     Elk River

Hey BruceW:
There is no charge to launch at Union Point.  I have launched there several times.
I have seen boats docked at the finger piers, located too the right on the point just before the Trent River (Cunningham) Bridge.  Some have stayed overnight there.  There may very well be time restrictions such as those at Oriental.  I will check them out tomorrow.

Elk,

You can't take it over FROM someone, because we are just all not running it. You can take it OVER, though, and please do! I'm okay with the 8th of November, so far.

Hey All:
I went down to Union Point yesterday and looked carefully around.

There are no restriction signs on the docks.  There are three finger piers and one floating dock.  They do catch the wind pretty good, so any wind from the south would make them a little lumpy.

Likewise on the trailer parking spots, no restrictions.  Yesterday morning they were empty.  There is a head by the trailer parking.  I would think that the parking there is just as secure as the lot by Persimmons.

There is an Ohio joke about a man who left his car unlocked with four tickets to a Browns game on the dashboard.  When he got back there were a dozen tickets on the dash!  You gotta lock up your vehicles.

As Bruce is listed as a Captain and I as lowly foredeck crew, I know how to follow orders (plus, the 19th makes 40 years of marriage, so I REALLY know how to follow orders...), so I hereby announce that the 2014 Autumn NNR (Neuse River Rendezvous) will take place on the weekend of Nov 8 - 9.  Lady Elk and myself will drive down on Friday, the 7th, and hopefully get there early enough to launch.  I will probably call Parks & Recreation, but if there are no restriction signs up, I suppose we can indeed park right there at Union Park.  When we get to New Bern, I will monitor C.B. Channel 19, when we splash, VHF Channel 16, and of course, my cell phone will always be on.  Anyone can send me a personal message (I would say PM, but not too long ago, someone up in Barnegat Bay went on a tirade abt txt wrds & shthnd, note too menshin hes h8trd uv spelng errrrers [said person, of course, remaining anonymous])  and I can reply with my phone number.  I am not paranoid, but I believe only members are privy to the profiles.  We will have to head back on Sunday, but as we have a crew cab pick-up, I can make a sleeper berth out of the back seat for Lady Elk, so we won't need to cut out wicked early.  I have ordered a Maptech fold-out chartlet of the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers, plus showing some of the sound.  I will, however, leave any destination ideas to those of you who are local and have a better idea what might be accomplished in the given time-frame we are working with. Those who were there and can remember the BBB 2014, can tell you that we tend to carry a fair amount of food on board, so we do not have a huge need for restaurants, but are willing to go with the flow of other's desires.

I trust this will meet with other interested parties' approval.  If so, I look forward to meeting all who can attend.

     Fair winds,

     Elk River

Have a great time...still sailing up here in NJ.

     Ahoy, Bob!!:

Why don't you tag along? We'll throw your Walker in the bed of my pick-up and you can sleep in the cockpit of Blue Heaven.  Think of all the good, hearty food available (sorry, bring your own potato chips...).  Should be warmer there on the Neuse than on Barnegat Bay.

     Good to hear from you,

Perhaps during that first week of November, all who are going to partake of the ANRR (Autumn Neuse River Rendezvous) can chime in to say they will be there and what will be a good starting time for everyone.  If the starting point is to be different than Union Point Park, that can be pointed out.  A decision can also be made as to breakfast at home for the local crowd or at a restaurant to briefly go over cruising plans, a skipper's meeting, so to speak.  Or, folks could just show up and we could decide to go sailing downriver until it's late enough to anchor for the night.  We are very flexible in the plans department.

I am looking forward to meeting all who dare to sail with us.

I remain, with wishes for fair winds,

     Respectfully yours,

Looks good for me to leave Raleigh on Friday some time; might be able to meet up with others who are arriving or already there on Friday afternoon/night for socializing.

My boat is at Blackbeard Sailing Club, just downriver from New Bern; if all goes well, I could come out into the river and join the group any time after sunup.

Looking forward to a nice day on the water, and to seeing if I can sail my CP 23 any better this time with the new Ruddercraft rudder.

All:
Looks like this is coming together nicely...have a great time...still sailing up here in NJ. Obviously I can't make it- my daughter is up from Florida and we'll have an early Thanksgiving this Saturday. Looking forward to photo-journalistic coverage of this epic event.
But keep an eye on Mr. Elk: he'll steal every potato chip you have on board!

As the weather this weekend looks conducive to sailing, it will be a go for us to trailer down and meet with all that show up.  We may not make it in time to launch on Friday, but will play that aspect by ear when we arrive.

As to the questionable insinuation of a previous post, those who would be desirous of the TRUTH, the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH may continue to read, as this will be the only place where the aforementioned TRUTH will be available.   Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, let me assure you that in order to actually 'steal' any potato chips as my esteemed sailing associate has falsely warned you about, said chips must ACTUALLY MAKE IT to the rendezvous destination, a situation that occurred at the BBB 2014 that he has, for reasons known only to himself, failed to mention.  Hence, in the potato chip department, there was nothing to steal.  An on-going investigation continues into the disappearance of said chips.   Had any (with the emphasis on ANY) potato chips been available, it is possible I would have partaken of same, but, alas, that was not the case as there were none to partake of, although there had been before the lines were slipped in the morning.  I had to be content with salad and other nutritious food from Blue Heaven's larder.  I did, however, partake of one of the honorable Sean Reid's hotdogs, a fine gentleman that was helmsman on my esteemed sailing associate's vessel.  Thus endeth my closing statement on the issue.  I trust that you of the jury will not find on your doorstop a case or more of something called 'PBR', with a Garden State return address, to sway your thinking (in another thread, we learned that said PBR is not fit for human consumption, which should tell you something...).

     See you folks this weekend,

     Elk River

I'm guilty as charged. May the court be merciful in sentencing me. I appeal to the benevolent Judge Elk and ask for leniency. And a bag of Cape Cod sea salt and vinegar!:)
Wish I could be there with you guys- hoist a PBR for me!

The ANRR (Autumn Neuse River Rendezvous) is now but a fond memory.  I suppose it should be re-named as we (except for Terry) never even made it out of the Upper Broad Creek to the Neuse River.  To say that winds were light is a severe understatement.  The blame rests squarely with me as I didn't read down at the bottom of the memo that I was supposed to supply some wind.  I thought the peppermint flavored cookies were the extent of it.  However, the next time we head down that way, I will pack some in a gripsack or two.

A slight change of plans developed on our way down as Bruce suggested that we head directly for his sailing club.  He met us and led us in through the gates where he and Chesley graciously hosted us for the weekend at the Blackbeard Sailing Club.  We spent the night in the boat on the hard where the cabin temperature in the morning was 40 degrees F.  A little chilly perhaps, but having breakfast in the clubhouse warmed everyone up.  Terry showed up and launched his 19.  Shortly thereafter we all slipped our lines and headed out into the creek.  The fleet consisted of two 19's and two 23's.  Even after a few hours, we were not able to make it to the river.  A group of racers had left prior to our departure and had started the first of what was to be three races out on the river.  However, the conditions were so slack that the whole event was called off sometime after the first start.  We four rafted up for lunch and didn't bother to set an anchor (see Bruce's photo) and didn't even drift up or downstream.  We rotated a bit, but that was it.  We had a several hour gam and checked out each other's boats.  Eventually, we all motored back to the club where Terry loaded his boat up for trailering home.  The five of us and Jeff, a former Com-Pac owner that now sails a Saber (?) 28, all went in to New Bern for a nice supper and ice cream afterwards.

Another calm night was spent in the boats, but at least it was warmer than the previous night.  More no wind than wind on Sunday, so we walked the docks and checked out all the boats there and also the ones located on trailers in the club's large parking lot.  Charlie showed up, having motored over from New Bern in his 27.  He chatted a bit and then motored off down river.   We finally hauled our boat out and headed back to MD, arriving home a little after midnight.

All in all, another nice rendezvous, even with the calm conditions.  It is definitely a destination that Lily and I will make again in the future.  The Blackbeard Sailing Club is a superb sailing venue with a lot of welcoming members.  I thank Bruce and Chesley very much for their time and consideration in hosting us.

I will try and post some photos separately so I don't lose this.
