Title: running rigging on a 27'
Post by: archimedes on July 20, 2014, 07:39:07 PM
A friend of mine said he got a quote to replace the running rigging on his CP 27' and the price was $2500.  That seemed high to me.  Thought I'd run it past the experts here.

High, low, normal?

I would price Hutchins, I havent had to replace all the rigging on a boat that size so I am at a loss.

The running rigging on a C-27 consists of:
3 Halyards
Mainsheet and Jibsheet(s)
Two reefing lines
Outhaul (cable and rope)
Topping lift
(roller reefing line)

Unless replacing the tackle especially roller furling, $2500 seems high.  If you are replacing all the lines and tackle $2500 may be a deal.

I replaced what I thought that was needed of the running rigging (I took off the roller furling) on our '86 C-27 for way less than $2500.  I did not have to replace any of the shackles, pulleys, turning blocks or cars.

New set of running rigging is $515 from Hutchins. I ordered mine a few months ago. Seems to include everything I need, with the exception of the internal boom lines (main out haul and reefing lines). Hutchins says those were originally supplied by the spar manufacturer so Hutchins doesn't include.

My comment was based on Cable rigging..... so my comment is immaterial, I have no idea how I read that wrong....

My understanding was that the price he got was for the running rigging only.  That's why I thought it was high.

I'll have to check with him to be sure.

Thanks for the responses.

Here is another place that I have used in the past:

I bought halyards for my old Catalina 30.  They are reasonably priced and good rope.

The Cajun package is in no way comparable to the Hutchins. Cajun is providing two halyards and a jib sheet only. Hutchins also includes mainsheet, topping lift tail, jib downhaul, and furler control line. No wonder the Cajun is cheaper.

Wes,
You are correct.  Check out the price of their line though.  It is much cheaper than the other brands out there.  They can set up a custom rigging package for your boat if you talk with them.

I usually replace my running rigging a few pieces at a time.  It is more economical that way.
