I'm in the market for a CP 19, but I have a seldom used Honda 4-stroke 7.5 hp motor. Is that too big for the CP19?

CP19's carry their aft weight pretty well.
It will work, it's not going to hurt anything, but it's kind of heavy at 75lbs. Ideally you'll want to stay under under 60lbs.
Too much weight to lift on and off the boat and the motor bracket spring will need some human muscle assitance to raise the motor while under sail.
You might need to place some weight up front to offset the outboard. A long chain rode (say 20-25 ft) is both functional and provides the weight offset.
Most used sailboats tend to come with a motor, so I would hang onto it and see what your new boat comes with before making a decision.
You don't need much power unless you're in strong currents or tides. 5hp should be enough for almost anything.
Thanks Salty19. I was looking at your photos and it made me wonder if you're sailing at Hoover Reservoir. I'm from Columbus originally and my first sail was on that very same body of water. I met a fellow CP 19 owner at Alum Creek last weekend and he told me that helpful you were and that I should look you up. Thank you for your advice. I'm going to look at a 19 hopefully this weekend, but the motor is extra and I was trying to save money by using the one I already have. Warmly, Brendan
Agree w salty to purchase the motor with boat as long as it is good running order and sell the Honda on craigslist. Also the shaft length of the motor would matter in your decision.
I just upgraded to a CP- 19 and have 2 motors I am deciding between as well. ( 4hp 1997 Mercury longshaft and 1986 Nissan 5hp longshaft. I have great history with the Mercury for reliability but wonder if the 5 hp would push the boat noticeably better. I think I will try both before deciding, but if anyone has knowledge of these 2 motors I would appreciate feedback as well.

I'm thinking for the motor to try to get something lighter long term. You may well be able sell yours and buy a nice used 5-8hp two stroke for the same price. They run between 45-60lbs, and if it's a twin cylinder, it will be so much smoother running than the single cyl 4 strokes. Granted it will swallow more fuel, but it's not really a problem for me. We might use 5-6 gallons a year total.
Good luck with the boat search. CP19's are really great boats if you're looking for a strong, stable yet decent performing boat. In fact you might embarrass other boats on your lake (we sure have!).
