Has anyone ever had the pleasure of removing the big block of foam in the cabin under the cockpit floor? I'm going to assume its use is both for structural
strength, (to support the cockpit floor and seats), and as an added bonus flotation.
My new 1985 CP-16 had been stored in a barn for five years by the previous owner and by the process of elimination, "ugly mice odors", the foam has to go.
The photos of "Floridaze" show another type of support without foam. Also Kevin's photos of his ballast repairs are a big help. The fiberglass above my ballast is also lifting.
These two repairs are all that's left before its first sail.
I removed mine in order to reseal the concrete sole. I ran a hank of 3-strand rope around the block so that the two ends were in the cabin area and used the rope as a flexible saw. Once I had cut though the block I had enough wiggle room to remove it. I replaced it for the structural and flotation purposes by filling the saw kerf with expanding foam.

This will be a big help in replacing the new foam.
At the factory they must have put the foam in place, then the carpet ,and joined the two halves with a little compression.
