The manual bilge pump on Windrunner quit working, it looked original and has some cracks in the rubber so I ordered another. However I had some extra time at the Oriental Town Docks until Happy Hour started, so I thought that I would empty the locker and take the pump apart. Note that when you are in the locker the pump is overhead. I started by taking off the intake hose. I thought that I would test the integrity of the hose by blowing through it and listening for gurgles in the bilge. Lowering the hose towards my face released about 1/2 cup of bilge water that was trapped in a loop in the hose. Spent the next hour or so spitting. Turns out that there was a rock (Some PO had put rocks in the bilge!) stuck in the output flapper valve. Removed the rock and the pump works fine.
I now know what bilge water tastes like and can truthfully use it as a standard to compare the taste of other fluids such as instant coffee, cheap gin and rum.
