Title: Bowsprit
Post by: wroundey on May 16, 2014, 06:58:45 PM
I am getting ready to mount my new bowsprit, and as I drill holes into my hull, I am how much backing I should have on the bolts. Would a fender washer be enough, or should I make a larger steel plate for a backer?

The larger the area you spread the bolt load over the better. As long as it isn't super difficult to fit a larger backing plate where you want it. And, metal, even plate aluminum, is better than wood or plastic IMHO.

Here's how I backed the side deck mid-ship cleats I installed with aluminum plate on hand. A little tight getting it in, but success after all.

I found a piece of aluminum flat bar in the garage and used that. Seems to work so far
