Thanks to Steady1 for the suggestion on who to talk to about a new prop.
I purchased a new Campbell Sailor prop and just installed and tested it. The old one was also a Campbell Sailor prop with the following spec. 12 X 5 RH. The new one is 11 X 5 RH. the reason for the change is that I could not get the engine rpm past 2600 without blowing copious amounts of black smoke. The new prop puts me just 300 rpm below max rpm with no black smoke. Boat speed is very good now!
Thanks again Steady1 for the help!!!!

S/V Pooka
Roger that! Glad it's worked out. We've been pleased with the extra oomph it gives us motoring into a chop with no discernible loss of speed under sail.
BTW...we're finally able to focus on getting the boat ready for the trip north, hoping to shove off next Tuesday, 20 May, if all goes well. Are you still planning to head up the coast this summer, too?
Enjoy the day!
This thread got me wondering about the prop on our boat. I thought that I recalled it had three blades. (A more experienced sailer in the yard suggested that the best way to keep the prop barnacle free was cover it black magic marker. I waited to see if he did it on his Creelock 37 before I did it! I will let you know how it works out next time I pull the boat.)
It is a three blade 12XRH X9, according to the surveyor. It pushes the boat around 6 mph at 3000 rpm pretty comfortably.
One of the PO's must have upgraded the prop. Our other '86 had a two blade prop, and I see that Wes's also has two blades.

My current prop is 14DX12P - 3blade, which is slightly over pitched. I come up a few hundred rpm short of max, but doesnt really bother me, because I nearly ever operate there. My 18HP Westerbeke manual recommends 14DX11P - 2Blade or 14DX9P - 3Blade. Regarding barnicles, last year I applied Lanacote with very good success. Trying again this year.
Bill,
The canvas work is nearly done after that I'm ready to head north.
I'll drop you a note to see where you are when I leave here.
Charlie, make sure you color within the lines! :) I was told that a coat of cold galvanize paint would do the trick with barnacles.
Bob
Sounds good, Bob. Keep us posted. Hope to see you out there at some point!
Hey Bill:
I'am retired and don't have to stay inside the lines any more!

Am I wrong to assume you do not have the 18 hp diesel? I have a 14x10 that is not letting me turn the rpm's i should be attaining per the Westerbeke criteria. Just purchased a 13" Maxprop for a reasonable amount in hopes of getting her turning the rpm's it should. It seems there are wide varieties of props on both engines.

I do not have the 18 hp. I have a Universal M12 (10 hp). In fact I'm thinking about re-powering.
A local Bahama 28 owner has a 18 hp Yanmar for sale. Motor was installed and he became too busy and the boat has died on the hill. He said he turned the motor over every few months and it looks new. The motor has approximately 15-20 hours and is ~6 yrs old and looks like it. If anyone is interested I will forward his info. Motor is in Wilmington, NC. I believe the motor can be had for a reasonable offer.
