What is the latest on the gathering? What day do we meet? Any help needed in organizing? My boat is at Marino's in Ozona. About 3 miles from Caladesi Island. I can make arrangements for people who want to launch there and leave their cars and trailers. Let me know. I was out this weekend for the first sail on our new 27. It was great. Sorry about that northerners!
I ws just about to post a similar inquiry.
Channel 69 on the VHF will be the hailing channel for the get to gether.
I think the unoffical plan was to meet up Monday at Caladesi and then go from there. Any straglers can call us on VHF channel 69
How much does it cost to Launch at Marino's?
I plan on coming out Tuesday or Wed. I have to work Monday and not sure the wife will let me stay out all week.
And Are we still planning on a tour of the factory on Friday? Let me know and I will contact Hutchins.
Any others care to chime in.
I will talk to Tony and see if we can get a deal. He also has slips available. I will post what I find out tomorrow. How many boats are we talking about?
billy,
you got it right.
we'll meet at caladesi on monday morning, may 5th.
monday afternoon-ish we'll sail to a base camp to be determined (weather, availability)
we'll be monitoring channel 69 for late shows and those who can only come for a day.
last time i talked to rich, he said to contact him 2 weeks in advance and he'll have a better idea on his schedule.
awfeith,
please post info on this marina, some of us are still up in the air as to where we'll be launching from.
i've been readying the boat for the last 2 weeks. 80* on saturday, 70* on sunday, and right now the snow has been falling all afternoon and is accumulating on the lawn.
welcome to northern illinois!
i'll make sure to take a round about way to florida so this weather can't follow me.
see you all 3 weeks from today!

Marinosmarina.com we will probably be at Caladesi on Sat. My son has a power boat and can do support work for us. Taking people and supplies. Like I said,I will talk toTony tomorrow and supply details.
http://www.marinosmarina.com . Link to Tony's.
I can also look into setting up a night or two at the Marina. There is an area for socializing, showers, and mini mart for beer ect. Ozona is a cute community with water front bars and restaurants. Let me know.
what the heck is "socializing showers"?

crazycarl & Billy,
crazycarl,
Maybe it's just me being an "older salt" but after reading your proposed itinerary post for Monday May 5, I felt compelled to respond.
For those of us TRAVELING & LAUNCHING early Mon AM (May 5), proceeding to Caladesi Is. State Park Marina (from wherever), meeting and greeting arrivals, deciding on a basecamp location (will local knowledge be available?), departing later that afternoon to proceed to basecamp, and anchoring for the night once at basecamp, SEEMS A BIT AMBITIOUS and SOMEWHAT EXHAUSTING for those of us considering launching Mon AM , IMHO.
Guess I was under the mistaken impression as to WHY we decided to gather at Caladesi. That arrivals would take place throughout the day, and while CONVENIENTLY TIED TO DOCKS FOR THE AFTERNOON, EVENING AND FIRST NIGHT, we would accomplish all those things most of us thought would be nice to do on the FIRST DAY.
Otherwise, why assemble at Caladesi Is. at all? We could all try to launch from the same Ramp (or elsewhere) and proceed to a PREVIOUSLY ANNOUNCED BASECAMP LOCATION directly.
In any case I may just have to reconsider WHEN and WHERE I launch if I decide to attend.
Billy,
Approaching Caladesi from the south in the ICW, where is the earliest possible SAFE turn to port (west) in order to reach the outer channel markers to Seven Mouth Creek leading to Caladesi Is. State Park Marina? Curious if it could take place before G "15".
Thanks.

I checked with Tony this morning. He does not have slips available. You can launch there, but he can not supply overnight parking. He charges $10 for weekday launching. There is a public launch up alt 19 but parking seems to be the universal problem. I will check with a couple of nearby rv parks, as the snow birds are leaving this month. When I ask, how many trailers are we expecting. Seminole launch in Clearwater is a city operated and has overnight parking, but is south of us. Why not meet in Caladesi, stay overnight and push on from there? They have power, water, and floating docks. Last time I stayed there it was $11 a night with a 2 week max stay. Let me know. André
capt nemo and awfeith,
i thought someone mentioned it here that there was no overnighting at caladesi.
my mistake. my BIG mistake.
there is NO tent camping.
it would definitely be easier to meet and stay, at least the 1st night, at caladesi state park.
i just checked and slips can be reserved ahead of time, so i went ahead and reserved a slip for monday, may 5th.
we'll be at slip #22
22, 24, and 26 are next to one another.
THERE ARE ONLY 4 OTHER SLIPS AVAILABLE FOR RESERVATIONS, however, there are slips available on a 1st come - 1st serve basis.
here is the info for everyone else...

I just booked slip #24, but we will be there from Sat. I'll have more answers tomorrow about parking and launching. André
Now that sounds a hell of a lot better!

For Your Information
Talked to Caladesi Is. State Park Ranger today.
Although there are ONLY 6 Boat Slips that can be RESERVED there should be plenty of slips available on a "first come first served" basis for any and all who choose to attend.
Today, for example, with over 100 boat slips in the Marina there were only three (that's 3) boats there.
The Ranger said we would not have a problem overnighting there.

Nemo,
Sorry if the above was confusing. I vaguely recall someone saying some of the Com-Pac'ers would want to camp in a tent and that is why Caladesi was just suggested as a meet up and then onto somewhere else. But, that was not me. If anyone is planning on sleeping in a tent, please speak up.
Otherwise, I think Caladesi would be the ideal base camp. And then we could make judgement calls the day of as to where to go and possible overnight.
As for the approach from the south....well......I've never came from the South. Always from the North and under the Honeymoon Island Drawbridge.
I did find this online though..........
Follow a compass heading of 212 degrees from the Dunedin Causeway Channel, which runs between Hurricane Pass and the Intercoastal Waterway. There is a brown Park sign affixed to Dunedin Causeway Channel Marker 14 that notes where to head toward Caladesi Island. There is also a Marker 14 on the Intercoastal Waterway, so don't confuse that marker with the one on Dunedin Causeway Channel.
Follow the compass heading of 212 degrees for approximately 1 mile. If you are over 3 foot draft, you may want to follow the ferry boats into marina. At the very least, make sure you approach at high tide and in daylight. Shoal draft vessels will have a much easier time navigating this stretch of water.
As you get closer to Caladesi Island, you will start to see channel markers identifying the approach into Caladesi Island. There is also signage adjacent to the channel makers that indicate an area restricted to power boaters. Just stay to the (narrow) channel, and you will be OK. Once the channel starts to enter the Caladesi Island area, it will continue to snake through an area of mangroves before finally reaching the marina.
here is the website I found it on...

Just be sure and mind the tides....worse case, just get out and walk!
Billy,
Thanks much for a very thorough answer to my question.
Hope to meet you at some point in time.

There is a short cut when approaching from the south in the ICW. It is at G "9". The best time to take it is mid to high tide. Head west and aim for a small group of posts/signs in the water about a half mile from the 9. Keep them on your bow and the 9 on your stern. The channel is not real wide so keep a good eye on both and also on your depth finder. Those post/signs are at the Creek leading into Caladesi. Take a left and make your way south into the marina.
Sea Ya!
Bob
bob lamb,
I was looking at possibly cutting across westward earlier, somewhere between those spoil islands, especially since my Sun Cat only needs a heavy dew (14") to float herself. Depth Finder, ha ha. A lead line, depth stick, or naked eye are used aboard Sun Cat "Frisky".
Thanks much for the "local knowledge".
