I have just purchased a Com-Pac 19II, hull #351. I am hoping to have it at my house at the head of Chesapeake Bay soon. I had to purchase a trailer, which I am adjusting for the boat, which is presently in N.J., between Atlantic City and Tom's River. I will be searching through the various threads for ideas, such as battery size (our needs are minimal), available storage for lightweight items under the v-berth and other items. I noticed one thread recently about the port screens, of which I believe I am missing one. There seemed to be some good ideas there. This looks like a good, active forum and hopefully I will come across some other upper Chesapeake sailors.

It's a great place with some great folks who are loaded with information. Where is your boat in NJ? I live between AC and Toms River and sail my 1985 23/2 "Koinonia" in the Barnegat Bay. I believe there are a number of guys who are familiar with your home waters.

Thank you for the reply, Bob23. The boat is on the hard in Waretown, NJ. It is a 1986, looks as though it was in the middle of the production run. We were originally toying with the idea of sailing it back here, but feel it might be safer to trailer it home and take our time figuring out all the rigging and other systems. It has CDI roller furling, an IDA rudder (lower only, I think), sails which are only 7 years old and an '06 5 H.P. Honda four stroke. It has a boarding ladder and upper stern pulpit add-on, also. No galley, but a built-in cooler in the space just aft of the mast compression post. The wiring is rather messy at the moment. We have battery operated nav. lights we were going to use which we use with our O'Day Day Sailer (which is now on the block), but again, the sailing back would depend on a good weather window. So we will trailer it and work on it here. The community I live in has slips, so it will be in the water 1/2 mile from the house. Perhaps we can sail it up to Barnegat Bay for one of the gatherings there sometime in the future.

So welcome to a new fellow CP-19'er MkII hull #351.
Many years ago me and my roomy drove from Chicago to Tom's River and back on a weekend to pick-up a TR-6 race car. I think we almost saw a little bit of ocean on this fast turn-a-round trip. But that's all I know about Tom's River.
My hull is #588, a CP-19 XL.
The round port screen were offered by Hutchins as factor option.
I purchased those, plus a ladder, and stern pulpit, stanchions, and life lines. Later an IdaSailor rudder with bronze bushings added.
An additional I cut in a 16" x 16" lift-off hitch hatch in front of the compression post is on the deck of the Vee Birth for storage and instrument placement. And she is fitted with a Harken 0-0 furler. The battery is a deep cycle 75 and all lighting is LED.
What O/B engine is on the stern? [Opps. You snuck in your post ahead of me while I was keyboard pecking and answered this O/B question.]
Were going to need some more information about the purchased trailer, tilt, or extended tongue or ??

Skip had a question about my trailer: a 2004 Road King Trail-N-Sail (Canadian made) with a launching tongue, single axle with fat tires. I had to cut one foot off the bunk uprights (wonderful tool, that sawz-all) and move the winch post forward to clear the bowsprit. The trailer was purchased at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (cbmm.org). It was on their auction page, but items can be purchased prior to the auction which is held every Labor Day weekend. The yard placed it on the trailer with 4 ft. forward of the axle and 3 ft. aft of the axle. It towed very nicely the 108 miles home. The boat should be in the water shortly and I hope to find some other Com-Pacs at the head of the Chesapeake. A friend purchased our O'Day Day Sailer, so as soon as that is gone our back yard won't look so cluttered, even though there still are 6 boats out there... Jeez, I'm surprised I sold the Day Sailer... Anyway, my wife and I are looking forward to sailing the Com-Pac and have yet to name her.

I also sail at the head of the Chesapeake, just a little south of you on the Bohemia River, but sometimes get out to the Turkey Point area. I sail a 17 ft Compac Legacy.
This weekend I hope to sail out on the Susquehanna flats towards Havre de Grace close enough to see the fireworks on Saturday night. Then we might anchor out at Cabin John Creek for the evening. I really like our little "neck of the woods" for sailing. I hope to see you out on the water sometime!

Craig what a coincidence. I may live in Delaware now but I just bought a vacation/future retirement home in North port Florida last month. The idea is in a few years when I retire I will bring my Compaq legacy (or maybe an eclipse by then?) down and sail in Charlotte Harbor and possibly out to Cayo Costa.
I will look for you and your boat when I am around Punta Gorda vacationing this winter.
I will be curious to know how you like the CD Furler....I have owned a 19/2 for 6 months and am contemplating a furler for the boat. My boat is in Southern Oregon....not exactly in your back yard. Good luck with the boat...I enjoy this one.

You bought Blue Heaven! I was wondering if her new owner would end up here-I looked at her in March but didn't pull the trigger(over-thinking the trailer modification thing)?I guess I wasn't the only one thinking about sailing the boat back home!I'd be looking at Barnegat Inlet,NJ coast to the NY/Hudson lanes,East river(Hells Gate) to Long Island Sound and Connecticut River.And still need a trailer.Prudence made that decision for me.
So I ended up with #300( that needed a lot more work,but messing around is half the fun) with a trailer and I lost interest in other sailboats(slight exaggeration there).The CP 19 is a keeper!

I sailed on Blue Heaven a few years ago with the previous owners out on Barnegat Bay, and they sailed with us on BeagleI, our C19 of the time. When we moved to VA and were looking for another boat, I had Bob23 check out Blue Heaven for me when she was on the hard in Waretown, and he sent me a bunch of pictures. She is a fine boat. We ended up, however, getting a 23 that was closer- again no trailer, though we did find and buy a trailer. Enjoy.

I started this thread and then didn't check on it for quite a while. Sorry about that, folks.
Mike asked about the CDI furler. I don't know how old it is, but it seems to work just fine. The previous owners kept all the information of add-ons to the boat, so we have the manual for it. There is a new CDI halyard for it which I have yet to install. I will get to that at some point as the jib can't be hoisted as high as I would like. But again, it seems to work just fine. It uses it's own halyard, not the boat's masthead one.
Sawfish, I am glad you didn't go through with purchasing this one as we would have missed out! The lack of a trailer seemed to be a problem for several potential buyers, according to the fellow I purchased it from. That may be one reason he dropped the price more than once. I have out-laws in Stonington and hope to sail or, more likely, trailer the boat up there at some point. I also have some family on Cape Cod and would like to do some more sailing up there. We used to keep a 25' sailboat on Buzzards Bay and like the sailing there.
peterg, it is interesting that you sailed on Blue Heaven in the past. It does seem to be a nice boat, we just have some work to do to make it "ours", if you know what I mean. We have already started making our mark on it, hopefully for the better.
Right now the boat is on the trailer getting ready to head to the Barnegat Bay Bash this weekend. We are looking forward to that and then re-launching back here on Chesapeake Bay for some fall sailing.

I just received my FF/2 furler and sails but have not installed it...will be interested in this thread. The manual says "do not install furler unless boat is on the hard"...I had planned to drop the mast and install at the dock while in the water...any comments on that proceedure (new forestay already cut to length by sailmaker)? Also will have a Johnson working jib and main for sail in serviceable condition for sale (haven't decided about the genoa for sure).

I am not sure about the boat being on the hard business, unless they are thinking of having parts being dropped in the drink. Ours was already mounted, except for the sail, which simply slides up the slot. I know on ours that the drum can be raised by hand to expose the forestay turnbuckle, so I would think that you could install it in the water.
I suppose if the jib is a hank-on, it wouldn't do me much good, but a spare main can be handy. You can let me know about pricing at some point.

Ahoy Follks, I'm new to the blog and just got a 19, trailered her to Oford MD yesterday where she'll be living. Not new to sailing and am real excited at the prospects of trailering to awesome spots seldom sailed..and the shoal draft adds so much more. I'm still getting ideas about everything but can honestly say that this next spring looks to be very exciting, look for Stewball in the Choptank and south,..Cheers

Welcome to the forum and you made an excellent choice with the 19. We purchased ours this past April and have enjoyed it very much. We trailered it two rendezvous' this year; one in N.J. and one in N.C. We sail at the head of the Chesapeake. Keep an eye peeled in January for news of the HOTCR.

Thank you for the welcome mates! My boat, Stewball, is in Oxford MD, and will sail the lower bay for the most part but I haven't forgotten about that trailer and that I can go anywhere. In particular though, I'm looking forward to trailering to the Onancock or Chrisfield area and launching and doing the Smith and Tangiers Islands and all that that area offers, especially some S//mith Island chocolate cake!
Ive 2 grandkids and so I know this is a great platform to teach them and other kids I know the basics of sailing, this is something Ive been committed too for a long time with other boats. Now that I both teach and inspect boats for the USCGAux as a vessel safety examiner, watch for the blue and white burgy in the Bay and kids with big smiles on their faces! Cheers www.lintonrigg.com
