just finished watching "all is lost".
what was this nucklehead doing in a sailboat and how did he manage to make it all the way to the indian ocean?
if i'm at the top of the mast and notice a storm coming, my 1st thought after getting back down isn't to shave.
how about putting that sea anchor to use? no, let's wait until the storm is almost at it's acme and then i'll go forward and hank on the storm jib.
well now the boat is sinking. think i'll throw out the life raft, tie it to the sinking boat, climb into it, and go to sleep. wth!
and what about his electronics? who decides to sail around the world and not upgrade to a water proof radio?
no handheld radio in the life raft?
no life jacket?
and who calls...S O S?
i'm no expert by any means, but even on a small lake i have a ditch bag packed and at the ready should anything go wrong.
it's clear that who ever wrote the screenplay is not a sailor.

I also liked the part where he tied the life raft to the sinking boat. Duh? While watching the movie, even my wife caught that. The photography was ok...I've seen worse movies.
Maybe we can use "All is Lost" as a directive of what NOT to do in an emergency! I wonder how much Redford was paid. Even I could have memorized the lines from the movie.

i understand your concerns gentleman, but keep in mind that i wrote the screenplay when i was six playing with my sailboat in the bathtub
I forgot to mention how he left the companionway hatch open during the storm each time he went on deck.
The hatch and drop boards were removed when the boat rolled, yet the cabin sole showed no water when he went back down below.
I did like his trick for de-salinating the sea water. I learned that back in boy scouts.

Words almost fail me, but ... I must chime in -
The movie was - UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, THOROUGHLY, INDISPUTABLY, ABSOLUTELY (and many more) quite disappointing, indeed.
As was pointed out, there's NO excuse for the MANY technical errors throughout the film.
Glad I watched it through Netflix and didn't waste my senior discount money at the Big Screen!

Agree 100%.....Between my wife and I, she is not the true sailor but she comes along happily for the ride and has been in some rough crossings. She says " let's go on an adventure - I will cook and help out but just don't ask me to pull on those strings"! Now that the stage is set and you can picture her ("strings"!!!) , she was literally laughing out load and said at least 10x " oh c'mon- what an idiot- who can be that stupid". I actually felt bad that I made her watch it. What a ridiculous series of events in that movie. Big letdown.

Correct me if I am wrong but don't most life rafts have hydro static pressure sensors on the painter lines? And they are supposed to be tied to the mother ship?
Once the sensor hits a certain pressure/depth it releases.
At least that is what I read while studying for my Coast Guard Captains license....which I passed btw.
But their were too many mistakes to count.
All my time and money I spent on this movie was lost. I am glad he did not have much to say because I could not keep my mouth shut while watching this. The guy in the Viagra commercials makes it look like no big deal. It does make all of us think of the seriousness of our adventures and miss-adventures.

I watched and decided that Redford had zero idea what to do with a boat and he was perfect for the film because he didn't have to recite any lines written for him. This film resembled a dead marcel.

I think the point is that the character wasn't a good sailor and made mistakes. Just because he didn't do what he should, is a flaw of the character, not the movie. I thought it was good until the last 30 seconds.
Yes,it would have much better if at least the obvious technical errors were vetted beforehand ,but to have any film about sailing is remarkable,no?, Especially one with Redford's star power. Hollywood rarely gets the details right in anything, the film was obviously not intended as an instructional video for sailors.

I saw it about three weeks ago. One of the worst movies I have ever watched. From water pouring into a high cabin trunk port that was at least four feet above the waterline to his mistake after mistake without any story development to indicate his level of experience or why he was there in the first place. I thought "Message in the Bottle" was the worst movie about a so called master mariner I had ever seen but this one takes the cake. Ironically I saw an interview with Nicholas Sparks recently where he said he didn't just write romance novels because of the level of accuracy that went into his character development. What a crock.........
i talked with rich today about the movie and you know what. i have decided to give it a look. there are so few really funny movies anymore and im curious how redford would do in a comic role.

Hey, Redford is going back to a comedy role and this one may have merit. Watch for the 2015 release of "A Walk in the Woods". Read the book by Bill Bryson a true but maybe slightly exaggerated account but hilarious. How they are going to do the screen play with the major characters about 25 years too old for the parts escapes me, but who knows. Redford wanted to do it earlier with Paul Newman, kind of a return to Butch and Sundance, but Newman died.
ok, here is one time i should have taken advice. i just had to watch some of this movie. it was like a car wreck you just had to look at. the first few minutes should have been a tip off as to what was to come. lets see, he clips a container and gets holed above the water line. bad enough, then he ties a sea anchor to the container and i miraculously is pulled free of his boat. then he "sails" back to it ( i guess to get the sea anchor back) and hits it smack with his bow. heavy steel and fiberglass. they do mix well. he should have at least taken a couple of pairs of nikes. i guess the idea of heeling the boat to port was necessary to see if water would come into the hole. thats what i would have done. always a good idea to have the companionway completely open during a blow. he should have opened the seacocks to let the water out. after about an hour (which seemed like four) i couldnt watch anymore. glad it was free. i would have demanded my money back had i been at a theatre. i have never sailed offshore much less out of sight of land but i think even i would have been able to save that boat in those conditions at least enough to keep her afloat. how old is redford anyway---like 80. i know he was never a great actor but come on man. the movie should have been named not "all is lost" but "i am lost". please bob do us a favor, stay retired in colorado and never never make another movie
