Hello,
Well I finally got myself out and cut the plywood for the cabin roof and epoxied it up in place. Not really knowing what the heck I'm doing, it seems to have worked well. I'm going to wait a day or so before removing the supports. Also I added the picture of the new Com-Pac 15 just in case no one has seen the pictures as of yet.

Kevin , that forest of support sticks looks awful familiar. Hope you bonded well. You're going to love the overhead fiberglassing. Wear an old hat that you hate and buy a LARGE box of latex gloves. I just realized that your 16 is older than mine(#277). Good luck and fair winds, dude. Tim
Thanks Tim,
I did get the fiberglass up, what a mess!
I also added new concrete to the floor and now it's nice and smooth.
Today I put a coat of epoxy over it.
So far so good!

Today I removed the tarp and started a little cleaning. Had built up a lot of dust from all the grinding and sanding. I also put on the new companionway guides. Reinstalled the compression post and mast step. The interior needs one last sanding and it is ready for paint.
We're gettin' closer to some sailin'!
Oh...one more thing.
Anyone have any suggestions what interior paint to use?
Thanks.
Kevin, I used an off the shelf exterior gloss white latex house paint on the interior of the cabin just because it's easy to clean and it's CHEAP. I think it will hold up pretty well, and if it doesn't I've still got half a can left. Your work looks good. Fair winds, Tim.
Thanks Tim, I was hoping to do something simple yet effective.

Just wanted to post an updated pic. Put on the grab rails yesterday and also decided to just put the old pulpit rail back on instead of buying a new one, perhaps next season.
I painted my floor with enamel oil base and it has held up very good. the boat looks great!
I got the first coat on...looks pretty good. ;)

VERY NICE!!! Great work . . .
Looks Great! I especially like the looks of the sole. Did you use cedar?
Thanks Gil and Troy,
What a job that cabin roof was, sheesh!
As for the sole...
I used some left over Ipe decking I had around. Ripped into strips, sanded and routered the edges. I then drilled holes through the ends and strung it together with line. It looks great and can be removed easily if needed.
I'm working on making some Ipe trim rings to dress up the interior of the port holes. Pictures coming soon.

With all the rain we are having I noticed today some small puddles along the outside of the berths. I'm thinking the rub rail area has a hole somewhere. I guess I'll have to pull that off and investigate. I'm sure if I bury the rail sailing, water will come in. Not good.

Just plain nasty lookin' aye?
Finished a few items in the cabin today. One of the major ones was the installation of my home made porthole trims. With the help of my daughter we put them on with no trouble. After a good clean up we sat around and took a few pictures.

Tomorrow I plan to finish the rub rail repair and then I'll see what I can get into next. Can't wait to get out sailing and have something other than repairs to write about.
Kevin, Your rebuild is starting to make mine look a little half-assed. Seriously though, as we say down here in the south, you done good, boy. Have fun, Tim
(http://a4.cpimg.com/image/94/80/58500244-db21-01B001A5-.jpg)
Finished up the rub rail repair, and yes it was fun trying to stretch the rail back into place. Repaired the motor mount, well, the best I could. I had fun installing the new swivel block and cam. I'm still sore from reaching under the lazerette and trying to put on the nuts. My daughter crawled down to the end of the berth and helped retrieve the nuts as I dropped them over and over and over again... but we did finally get it done.
Also ran all the new lines and tuned up the shrouds and up went the sails for the first time under my ownership. Just waiting for my outboard to arrive and we are ready to sail. Everything else I want/have to do is just cosmetic or not a necessity right now. My daughter began decorating the interior as I did a final vacuuming. We are good to go!
The boat looks great! Now quit working and go sailing, you have earned it!Congratulations on bringing another compac back from the grave.
I sure am ready to sail! I joined this site back in December of 2004, then didn't buy a boat until August of 2005. Now with the boat ready it is June 2006.
My how time does fly!

<nod> no doubt, time flies and only one direction.
quite a nice result from your walking that direction! a better-than-factory sailboat and a bright crew to sail her with.
Well I knew the trailer needed some attention but looking at it closely last night I can see the tires are shot. I'm surprised they made it up from Maryland to Jersey last summer. So new tires are on tap along with new lights. I think I will still be on schedule for sailing on the up coming long July 4th holiday.
Keep your fingers crossed.
-Kevin
Be carefull to get the tires rated to take the weight of your loaded CP16 and trailer. I think the usual tires sold in the boating stores are B rated and to safefully carry the CP16 you really need C rated tires.
Yeah I was just checking 'West Marine' and they have the load B, which is what's on the trailer now. It was interesting to read on the sidewall that the max. weight is like 750 lbs, not quite enough for the CP16 I gathered.
So...any good leads where to purchase tires and rims?
UPDATE
I found Eastern Marine Online, they have the C rated tires.
Any thoughts?
-Kevin
I found "C" rated mounted tires and rims for around 60.00 apiece at Northern Tool. They have some retail stores and maintain a fairly good web based business.
I went ahead and ordered the tires from Eastern Marine, $44.95 each. I also ordered the new lights through then as well.
Now for boot stripe paint, I thought I remember reading somewhere, someone using 'Rust-Oleum' to paint there boat. Anyone else hear of such a thing?
-Kevin
Marcus says, "Factory brown stripe: Murras duplicolor Auto DSFM 153 Dark Brown M"
--editing to say--
if an auto spray paint works well enough for marcus to recommend it, surely, by the nature of rustoleum, using rustoleum sounds very logical and durable.
--editing once more to say--
wonder if it comes in baby blue.... hmm.... and since my sails are mildewed to embarrassing proportions as i have received them, i am going to do a tie die on them. if they mess up, oh well.
i was thinking red, with the first dip towards the head, then i'll paint in some black seeds. and did i mention i'm doing a dark green/light green watermelon shell pattern on the hull with a hot pink deck?
--editing once more to say--
dude... just got back from home depot with a can of baby blue rustoleum. my instructor highly recommended keeping the hull white so motorboats are less likely to create a t-bone steak situation... but i must say, my watermelon idea is very appealing to me. the baby blue will work until next winter when i can stand to keep eva out of the water long enough to go over her with an airbrush.
what color you goin' with, kev?
When I cleaned the bottom I took everything off including the original water line stripe(boot stripe?). So I want to repaint that, not the hull, while I can still see the outline of the old one. I'm not bottom painting because I plan to keep her on the trailer this season.
Oh, as for color perhaps a royal blue or hunter green.
-Kevin
PS. Sorry to hear your sails are in such poor shape. If they are not too far gone you can send them out to be refurbished I do believe. There are others on here that know more about that than I.
Well put on the reg. numbers and put the name on the stern. Looks like it's getting very very close to ready. Also started to paint the new boot stripe on. I plan on spending father's day doing a bit of work on her. Next weekend we plan on doing an 'official Denaming/renaming ceremony', just for fun mostly, I'm not that superstitious.
Have a Happy Father's Day!
-Kevin
K3,
Your earlier posts show a photo of a what appears to be a new topside or one-off for your 16. Did you do this? Was it purchased? Just curious as I may have missed the explanation of what it was and why.

The Admiral and I officially christened our Com-Pac this evening. We popped a bottle of blueberry flavored champagne from the local south jersey Renault Winery. With a few kind words we bid farewell to 'Puff' and welcomed 'Floridaze' to a new life of sailing along with fair winds and a following sea. With a quick splash we quickly retired back inside away from the mosquitoes and downed the rest of the bottle. Come Saturday July 1st we launch for the first time. Thanks to all of you for following along and lending a word of encouragement and/or advice.
-Kevin
PS. Thanks Dusty for that sailboat marquee, did you make that yourself or what?
well, i saw your name marquee-ing, and i thought, "ooh, sailboat!", so i went and googled, "ascii sailboat", found this link (http://www.angelfire.com/ne/stud2/sports1.html#sailboat), but i didn't think the sailboats there quite looked like a cp16, and wouldn't have done floridaze justice, so i stole the water ascii, but made the rest. no wind yesterday, but today it was howling at times. devo & i took eva out on a date, and, i guess this is my sixth or seventh time out with her, had her heeled over further than i'd ever done - gaining confidence and all. had a freakin' blast, but stayed out too late.
anyway, congratulations on the christening of your ship. you must be excited. i tell you, you have patience to an extent i can only dream of. your boat is looking absolutely fantastic. i would be embarrassed if you saw mine... but, i'm waiting for july and august with probably less wind to commit a weekend or two into dressing the hull and interior - the stuff that must sit for 24 or so hours until another coat. did get new tires and repainted the mudguards, recarpeted the bunk boards, and finally got all the vinyl & sticker adhesive off in preparation for the oxalic acid bath, new baby blue painted cove and boot stripe, and my bottles of 3m fiberglass restorer/polisher and polisher.
and anyway again, man, i am excited for you! i can't wait until july 1st to hear about it!
Well I guess I'm ready as I'll ever be. There are still a bunch of things I'd like to do but that will be a continuing thing. I'm now ready for some sailing in between the working. Keep a sharp eye out for a new thread of the maiden launch and sail of 'Floridaze'.
Have a safe and happy 4th everyone!

Well I did a bit of work on the trailer since the boat was in the water. One of the reasons I had such trouble launching was two of my roller were bent and hence would not roll.
So I took the time to replace them and hope things will work much smoother on haul out and the next launch.

Well we pulled Floridaze out of the water after six days. The tilt action on the trailer worked great but the make-shift winch post didn't hold up so well and started to bend a bit. So I just ordered some new parts to fix that before our next launch after we return from vacation.
-Kevin
Hi Kevin,
Finally got back to work on the Teddy B. Pulled the rub rails, and compared to mine, your mess looked great. (Die grinder worked great at removing the old caulking, if that is what it was). Had a real problem stretching the rails back on, even in 102 degree ambient. Wound up having to rig a come-along to a tree, and force stretched them. You would think that after 31 years, they would have developed a set, but no luck. Just wondering if you found an easier method to this madness. Have been keeping up with your progress, and am a bit envious as it looks more like Sept or so before we wet the keel after 22 years of neglect. (With my luck, another hurricane will probably cross Fla about then). Looks like Floridaze was a major success --- congrats!!! --- Pat
Thanks Pat!
Well I made it back from our Florida vacation and am just about back to normal around the house and work. I did install the new winch post on my trailer since the other "thing" I had on there wasn't quite up to the task.

I hope to get back out sailing this Saturday so I have my fingers crossed for some wind.
PS.
I did rent a Hobie Cat down in the Bahama's, it was fun but could have had a little more wind.

Hi Kevin, great photos and stories!
Kevin;
Really enjoyed the photos and the story, well done........ Yur gettin' yur sea legs matey.......... Doug
Well I am almost ready to pull the trigger on buying a CP-19. So I thought I'd throw my 16 up on the classifieds to see if anyone is interested.
Thanks for looking and following along on this little Com-Pac's new life, I couldn't have done it without all you guys and gals. And she ain't done yet, this little boat is ready for someone else to take over the reins and enjoy her for years to come.
-Kevin
Here are some videos from my time sailing Floridaze.

-Kevin
Cool....
well, you are so blessed, it takes more than some sevens to get there.
man that 19 travels nicely!
what a life, man, what a life!
PS: I've been thinking about how when people take vids of their boats on a good and windy day there's all the wind noise. Might try cutting a tiny little piece of washcloth or t-shirt or shopcloth or something and somehow putting it over the mic (without getting in the lens's line of sight) - then the wind might sound more like a whoosh than a crackle, and we could pick up some acoustic wave action... (maybe)
Just bumping this up to make it easier for any potential buyers to find.
-Kevin
Kevin,
I have been admiring all the pictures of your hard work. The boat looks great! I was really attracted to your interior improvements. Can you tell me with a little more detail how you made the cabin soul? What is IPE Decking - it looks like teak in the picture. I would love to incorporate this improvement into the interior of my CP-16. Any detailed help you can provide me would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Roger.
Hey Roger,
The Ipe does look a bit like teak and I had a bunch left over from a deck job I did. I had 1" x 6" boards that I ripped down to about two inches. I sanded and rounded the edges some. I then lined them up and made marks for drilling holes through the edges.
Then I ran a small piece of line through the holes linking the boards together but they still have the ability to bend some so I could slip it into the boat. At first I tried to do a full length piece back to the support under the cockpit sole.
Couldn't get it in so I had to do it in two pieces, a larger one towards the bow with a smaller one toward the stern. I'll try and get some pictures to post up. I'm sure you could use teak or whatever material you could get your hands on.
I want to make one of these for my CP19, just don't like the carpet inside.
-Kevin
Kevin,
I appreciate the information. If you get time to post a few photos both installed and uninstalled that would be great!
I'm still not sure what you mean by IPE Decking. What does IPE stand for? The only wood decking I'm aware of here in Florida is 5/4 PT and I know that can't be made to look like teak.
Thanks,
Roger
Ipe is a type of wood like mahogany.
We build a lot of decks out of it here on the Jersey Shore.

Here is a close up of the sole.
Thanks Kevin, appreciate the info and pics.
Did I understand that you moved up to a CP 19?
Was it another fixer-upper or did you get something a little more plug and play this time?
I have a Columbia T-26 parked in the Daytona City Marina which I am continuously working (playing) on but we decided to get something small as well for the lake out back and trailerable for extended weekend travel - so far the CP16 seems to be working out.
Do you have any pics of your 19 posted yet?
Roger.
Hey Roger,
Yeah the 19 is ten years newer(1985) so it was pretty much ready to go. It was in the water when I purchased it in late August so we got to sail it all of September. Still need to get the electrical system up and running, the PO never really used it as they daysailed mostly. Now that it's out I have to clean and repaint the bottom as well but at least no fiberglass repairs.
For pictures click the link in my sig and it will take you to our sailBlog.

Maybe I can just keep both boats? M'mmmmm.....
Thanks!
-Kevin
Hi Kevin,
keep em both what the heck. I am trying to figure out a way to keep our Ranger 23 and our new to us C-16. Question for you regarding the repairs that you did. I am in the process of sanding down the interior prior to painting and am finding that the inside of the boat has regularly spaced bumps so to speak. This means that when sanding I am starting to cut into the fiberglass of the hull, how deep did you go in your efforts to remove as much of the paint as possible? Thanks for posting pictures of all of your hard work. --Chad
One can chemically strip the paint from the inside of the boat without harming the resins. Skip.
Chad,
I didn't have alot of loose paint, it just was ugly and yes the surface is bumpy to say the least. I didn't do alot of sanding, just scuffed it up some hoping to help the paint adhere better. I ended up using Kilz I bought at Home Depot and just rolled it on. My plan was to use that as a primer then go over that with a color. Of course I never got that far with purchasing the CP19.
-Kevin
Chad,
When prepping the inside of your 16 for paint, unless there is a delamination problem, thick paint, or you just want to calm down the texture you don't need to use a mechanical sander for adhesion. You can use a scuff pad called a scotchbrite. It is a 3M product although other companies produce it as well. They come in colors for how abrasive they are. A red scotchbrite would be best for what you are doing.
These are not to be confused with scotchbrite kitchen scrubbers as some people think. I do believe you can obtain these at Home Depot like places and hardware stored as well. If you can't find them there check your phone book in the automotive section for a Auto Body paint jobber (or supply). They will have them for sure and also help you with any questions you may have on the refinishing subject. They usually are friendly people.
Hope this may help.
Lee...
Thank you for the info, the paint is cracked and peeling in some spots and a scotchbrite pad would probably work perfectly at getting rid of the paint that is already starting to come off. I will check with the hardware store on the way home today.
And so this little Com-Pac is off and on its next adventure with its new owner.
She is on her way up to New England where I'm sure she will be enjoyed.
Godspeed and Fairwinds Andy and I look forward to hearing about your sailing adventures in NH.
