Well the new year is here so it's time to think about the BBB 2014, the East Coasts best way to tarnish your reputation hanging out with a bunch of confirmed Compac-o-nauts. Any pariticular dates good or bad for anyone? I'd like to not be there on July 19th- that is the Blackburn Challenge race around Cape Ann.
Anyone who is not familiar with the BBB, just do a search and you'll find plenty. Well, a bit of factual information and plenty of BS!

Well to summarize where we are with the planning of the BBB 2014, at the Mid Winter gathering, there seemed to be a general consensus that the Bash should be a multi day affair with at least a few overnights. I was thinking about some different activities and, honestly, there's not much to do at Tice's except enjoy beautiful sunrises and sunsets on unspoiled beaches. However, just across the bay are a number of great, waterfront restaurants eager to feed hungry and thirsty sailors. We could incorporate a nice dinner into the Bash schedule somehow, either before or after the actual Bash. Kick it around, me maties. It's not too early to plan!

Most any time is good for me. Sunday, August 10th is Bristol Borough, PA and Burlington, NJ "Festival of Lights" that I hope to participate in this year. The festival includes a Decorated Boat Parade on the Delaware. With my "new" motor and some special arrangements, I think Pegasus will put on a fine showing. I do look forward to a weekend on the Bay.
I like Bob's idea of a get-together on shore at the next BBB. But, I wonder about the logistics of people launching from different ramps. How do we meet up? Or perhaps we can simply de-trailer and drive to a centrally located eatery for an early brunch. Then return to our respective ramps and make the trip to Tice's. An important thing to observe is the tide chart on that particular day. Last year proved a bit gruelling for me since I left Bayville late on a low tide which made launching a bit arduous. Or an alternate solution would be to meet up someplace where we could have dinner and then sleep in our yachts on the hard or tied up for an early start in the morning. This would make it easier for anyone trailering a fair distance. Of course, I suppose that we could ALL launch from the same ramp ('cept Bob, of course). Someone will have to research that.

Count me and my Legacy in! And I hope to actually make it ALL the way to Tice's (or wherever) this time! And my nephew with his CP16 has a new motor, and I'll make sure he knows what nautical charts are this time, so he doesn't run aground over by the Lighthouse this year!
As for what weekends don't work for me, I would NOT be able to make it over the weekends of Jun 21, 22 or June 28,29.

On my end, middle to end of August is looking ok. Weekends of July 12th and 26th are good, too. September is a nice month but let's kick this around...fortunately we are starting to plan early.

I've already eaten at Shady Rest a couple of times and enjoyed the experience (except the place kept rocking??). They seem to have earned a 4 star rating. It turns out that the other two are family entertainment places, not really suitable at all for what we want to do. I thought that if we contacted a restaurant that had a nautical theme and large parking lot to accommodate our yachts (overnight), that would be cool.
I'm not really familiar with the area, Bob, so your input is needed. The aforementioned is in Bayville on Rt. 9.

I'll try to get some time together and scope out the area. I wonder if the Captains Inn on the Forked River would work?

Yeah. Just an idea. Thought it would be neat to moor the boats in the restaurant's parking lot for the night and "camp out". Those whose boats are already in the drink can bunk up with those that are on the hard (and trailerable). An adventure in the making!
I'm sure that I'll be driving down the Atlantic City Boulevard in the near future, so I'll stop in and inquire at Shady Rest. If you happen to get there first, that's okay. Don't wait for me to do it. I like the sound of "the Captain's Inn".
Just Google Earthed Shady Rest and The Captain's Inn. Both places seem to have adequate parking. A couple of pluses for The Captain's Inn is that anyone who would rather overnight in the inn can do so. Also, it's right on the water where one could dock for the night as well. There seems to be a ramp just down the road for those of us dragging our yachts. It looks to be about 1 nautical mile to the bay.

I'm a little confused on the topic of where to sleep, etc, as I thought we were staying out on the boats at Tice's Shoal, but then again, I've been confused before!
Strange thing is I used to be around Bayville, Forked River, Lanoka Harbor and Barnegat hundreds of times over the years visiting family, but that was all before being bitten by the sailing bug. So I don't know much directly about the Barnegat Bay side and Marinas, etc.
However, looking around at the excellent maps and points of interest in the Interactive Guidebook on ActiveCaptain.com, it seems that for those wanting to go to a restaurant or hotel or marina with boat ramps, etc, the North fork of Forked River appears much more accommodating than way up in Bayville? When looking for restaurants, marinas, ramps, etc on the Googly, search for East Lacey Road, Forked River.
My uneducated conclusion is especially true if we decide to rendezvous at Tice's Shoal again this year, as Forked River is almost directly across from Tice's Shoal, rather than a long 7 mile sail north to get to Bayville, then another 7 miles back to Tice's?

I think Bob is on the right track. Maybe we can find a way to do some overnights onboard at Tice's and incorporate a get together at a restaurant, maybe one that has docking. Last year I launched from The Marina at Southwinds on Forked River because it appeared to be the closest to Tice's. The marina was fine and it was about 5 miles to Tice's.

I guess my original idea was something like: Overnight at Tices. Motor or sail over to the mainland for dinner at a waterfront eatery/drinkery and stagger/sail back to Tices. Or maybe spend that night at a slip at the eatery.
This idea is in it's infancy and certainly needs some refinement. But previous BBB gatherers will remember that this event is the most low key gathering possible. I'm trying to spice it up a bit so we do more than just meet at Tice's, eat, sleep and depart the next day.
We are all open to any suggestions.

Bob, your idea sounds great. Slow and relaxed is the way I like to travel with my Legacy! (as if I had a choice?) A couple of trips to the "mainland" of Forked River to a restaurant as an excuse to sail is nice. IF we want some excitement, I could get my brother to come run circles around us with his brand new stinkpot power boat. Maybe he can carry all the beer I'm supposed to bring, as my Legacy is so small I can barely carry a 6 pack? He even has a refrigerator in that thing! (and a real bathroom!)
By the way, according to ActiveCaptain.com, I see there's a large FREE boat ramp just to the south of Forked River in the Oyster Creek. It has a large parking lot. It's off of Dock Avenue in Oyster Creek town park. I've never been there, but it looks promising. If interested, copy and paste these GPS coordinates into Google Maps address bar.

No firmish dates as of yet. I guess we should do one of those polls that have been done here when deciding dates for prestigious events. In previous posts, the months of August and September were looking the most promising. For me, the only weekends available in July are 7/12 and 7/26.

Well, I created the NC poll; there's a little icon next to the word Poll on the intro screen of the forum. However, Salty had to edit it to make it work better. He'd be a good person to ask about this.

Ok...so I've dropped the ball on the BBB 2014 or so it seems. There still is time to resurect this event although I will admit it hasn't and probably never will come close to the CLR 2014. Possible dates are somewhere 3rd or 4th weekends of September. I'm toying with basing the Bash at a marina where we'd all have a slip, sleep aboard the boat, have a giant dock party and be free to dine at local restaurants. Of course, during the day we'd sail over to Tice's Shoals (which is not really a shoal) to enjoy swimming in the North Atlantic.
All's been quiet here of late but if anyone is still interested, we may just pull it off. If not, we'll just skip a year and plan for a real Bash in 2015. Whadayasay, mates?

However, the 3rd weekend (Sept 20, 21) is our first wedding anniversary, so to celebrate, we are chartering a sailboat on the Chesapeake near Annapolis. However, we could make it up to Barneget the 4th weekend, September 27th, 28th.

I have the 2nd week in September open but I'm planning a Hudson River Quest. Simply put, I hope to plunk into the Hudson and journey south for a week and see where I end up. I know...there is the Atlantic Ocean but who wants to sail through NYC when you live in upstate.

Unfortunately, sailing has not even made it to the back burner this season for me.. and I have a hunch that, between school and the orchard, I will be totally tied down from now till November.. but my thoughts will certainly be with you as you get some sort of version of BBB2014 off the ground.. Allan - great to hear that you are alive and well.. your hudson river journey sounds totally cool! Where is Marty? I guess it is time to give him a call.. if the BBB does not materialize.. maybe you could join us in the Poconos for the weekend of October 18th.. Our apple festival is on that Saturday.. nothing nautical about it whatsoever, but I bet that Linda would enjoy the crafts and the festive atmosphere.. of course, you could bring your rowboat and launch it in the river - there is a launch site just down the road..

Sweden..., hmm. I could think of worse places. They have a cool canal that is at least 90 miles long that allows you to sail across the entire country. It has about a zillion locks on it! Perfect for a CP16 (or Sun-cat). You guys with more complicated rigging would have a tougher time.
Count me in for BBB-2014. Of course I enlisted back on page one back in January. Pegasus hasn't gotten her bottom wet yet this season, beaucoup to do at home... sewer, shed, hot tub, deck, trees, etc., etc. Still no lawn, but the back yard is starting to come back. My outdoor railroad is buried in massive weeds. No help forthcoming from FEMA!
I'm available most any weekend in September except the 27th. I have a commitment for that Saturday (but, BBB-2014 will just have to take priority, if necessary!).

Yeah, no car problems, hopefully! "Victor" the '90 Volvo (~250,000 miles) now sports a new fuel pump in the tank (in addition to the $$$ one replaced last summer). Also, new tires and most importantly a pet barrier for my future crew-mate - Goldie (a yellow labrador retriever). I don't think Goldie will be ready for this year's BBB, but next year for sure.
Nockamixon sounds good to me. Maybe we'll find a bit more "air" this time. BTW, you may recall that I now have a whopping 2hp Johnson to exercise. Unless I get into the Delaware before BBB-2014, I won't have a real test for it until then. The local township ramp (two million bucks!) was badly damaged by ice last winter. I understand that they have just re-opened it. I'll have to check it out.
After reading everybody's posts yesterday, I got up the gumption to powerwash Pegasus. Boy, did she need a cleaning. Now she's all shiny (for the moment). Now to get her off the blocks and onto her wheels. She's been proudly flying the colors and the CPYOA Burgee all summer long... in our driveway!
Looking forward to meeting up with all. Eagleye, you know the Hudson's waters go all the way to Barnegat (and beyond!).

It appears that Tice's (N39 50.450 W74 06.269) is just over 4 land miles from The Captain's Inn in Forked River. Looks good to me. Besides, folks have the choice of utilizing the marina facilities, the restaurant and inn, etc.
My thought: Everyone meets at the Inn Friday afternoon. After a light? dinner and a beer or two (rum works for the hardier), we can turn-in for the night. At day-break (depending on tide), we can help each other launch our yachts (of course, Bob will already be in the water!). Then the little fleet can then set sail (about 4 miles) to Tice's.
After anchoring Saturday in 3-5 feet about 100 yards from shore we can hit the beach! Then fun, fun, fun! Folks can stay for the day or spend the second night at Tice's. I'm sure that Bob has some cool ideas for Saturday night entertainment. Then back to Forked River Sunday AM for a lunch and relax before driving home (except for Bob of course).

To refine what Marty has proposed: I stopped at Captains Inn today. They have slips but the bad news is that they are 50 clams! I may be able to negotiate him down considering we'll eat dinner at the CI. Next door at Townsends Marina, there is a ramp for 5 bucks, each way. They were closed today so I don't know about parking vehicles. I know the owner Jim so I'll call tomorrow about that. There appeared to be plenty of room in the yard: most boats are in the water. Townsends is within walking distance from the North Dock at Captains Inn. There's a cool little Tiki Bar right on the water. I guess Tiki Bars are the in thing these days...they're everywhere!
I realize this is very last minute and I offer my apologies. But if we can get a headcount of some kind...this might just get off the ground! I was looking at the weekend of September 26th but sounds like Marty, who is an essential part of BBB, is busy that weekend. We could go for the 1st weekend in October..winds are great...yahoos have mostly gone home. Give me your thoughts, mates and let's see what we can put together. We'll never measure up to CLR, but we can make up some really good lies!

Yes, we are free the last weekend in September as well as the first weekend in October.
Since we're driving from Delaware, we probably would skip the Friday night meetup at the Tiki Bar/Restaurant/Marina, and catch up with you guys sometime Saturday, probably over at Tices.
I have not asked my nephew yet if he also wanted to attend in his CP16. Once we pin down the actual dates, I will ask him.
I still wanted to check out the free town launch ramp from Oyster Creek, so we may launch from there rather than all the way down in Barnegat (like last year's ill fated trip), or up by you all in the Forked River. It seems like less motoring and traffic down in Oyster Creek at least from looking at the charts?

This seems like it has a chance of getting off the ground. Does the first weekend in October work for everyone who is interested? Marty, is that ok? By the way, Marty is in charge of the dingy shuttle from the boats to the beach at Tices. More details about that when we're actually there!
Mike: I can't find any info on the Oyster Creek ramp iether on the charts or here: http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/boat_ramp_guide.pdf I assume it's in Lacey Township, same as Captains Inn? If so, there's not much difference in distance by water to Tice's. Keep in mind overnight parking. Barnegat is ok for parking and although you had a bad experience last year, it might be work a consideration. But it is a long motor if that's the case.
I'll find out next day or two about parking. BTW, I don't think the Captains Inn is an actual Inn as in room accomodations. More of a restaurant, but I'll be the first to admit I don't know everything.

Please don't set the date just to accommodate me! I can cancel if absolutely necessary. All things sailing take priority!!! 1st weekend in October should be fine but I can do any weekend in September. I would hope that the Atlantic isn't frozen over by October. About 2 years ago, we had SNOW!

Either weekend 9/26 or 10/03 works for us.
However, I prefer 9/26 as I think I can get maybe 1 or 2 other boats to attend (only 1 is a Com-pac 16, but the other one non- Compac can carry our beer!) if it turns out to be that weekend. If it's 10/3, then it will just be my Legacy.
Ok...this narrows it down a bit. I'm available either date but leaning toward 9/26 because that would increase attendance. Plus we get to bust on the non-Compac guy. Some things are priceless!

The manager of the Captains Inn is away for the weekend bringing his daughter back to school but I'll be calling him on Monday to try to negotiate a lower slip fee. How many are willing to commit to this fools game called Barnegat Bay Bash 2014?

Let's plan on casting the weekend of September 26th in concrete. All in favor, say aye! Those against, say aye anyway! I'll call the manager of Captains Inn today to negotiate a lower slip fee.
I ilke the tentative itinerary that Marty laid out in his post of August 10th. Check it out. Note that the "turning in part" will mean staying aboard our boats as the Captains Inn is not an Inn in the traditional sense but rather it's a restaurant. I'll check with Townsends Marina to see if we can indeed stay aboard our boats there or we could launch Friday afternoon, eat dinner at Captains, and stay aboard in the boat slip.
Note that Island Beach State Park which is the location of Tice's Shoals, which is really not a shoal in the sense that we might run aground, is an undeveloped stretch of land between the Barnegat Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Undeveloped means that aside from bathrooms, there are no amenities of any kind so bringing any food or drink that you may need is up to you. It does however have some beautiful beaches and the swimming and fishing are great. And, as Marty alluded to, I'll have my dingy with me so maybe he can re enact the Great Dingy Escapade of 2013. We at least can verbally reenact it.
As far as entertainment, a fine beach fire could be the centerpiece of Saturday evening. If so, I'll bring some firewood. Hmm...do I smell S'mores? And, of course, we should have some kind of race, don't you think? So what say ye, merry sailors?

Yes, Cathay and I will be there in our Legacy, sometime during Saturday 9/27. We will catch up with you guys probably over at Tices. I'm still waiting for my nephew to respond to see if he can bring his CP16. My brother Tim and his wife Veronica will join us also in a non Com-pac (non sailboat also, but he will bring extra beer to buy us off), for saturday night also. I told him he is not eligible to race against us however!
I'm guessing you guys will anchor somewhere south of the walkway at Tices similar to last year? We have an inflatable dinghy (well, more like a pool toy) to get to the shore. Is there a walkway over to the ocean side to find you guys? Is it possible to walk among the scrub growth visible from the satellite view? Or do we have to go ashore up north at the boardwalk where all the other boats are, and walk south to find you guys?

I would like to anchor south of the walkover. Most of the yahoos anchor near the walkover so it's a lot quieter the further we get. I like to anchor in about 3 feet of water, minimum so we can walk from boat to boat. We'll see how that goes depending on wind forecast.
Some of the other walkovers are accessible but the governing authorities seem to frown on using them. They'll get over it. I'll be up there before the bash to personally check things out and I'll look into this specifically. Worse case, we row or walk over to the walkover stairs and access the beach there. There are bathrooms in that area.
Looking forward to this event. I'll PM my cell # to those who don't already have it so we can stay in touch. I'll also use the VHF for communication while sailing.

Anyone looking for crew? I've been curious about the CP 23 all summer and would love to sail on one if anyone needs a hand. Right now I sail a Mirage 5.5 on Lake Champlain and Lake Spofford. Have been sailing on and off for about 38 years - most of it on Champlain. My 11 year old daughter, Emily, would be with me (she's a well-mannered kid with a bit of sailing experience).
Willing to supply beer and/or...?
I'm in VT about 5 hours from Forked River but happy to do a long drive that weekend. Emily and I could stay in a motel (maybe Tom's River) Friday night.
So, anyone need an extra hand or four? Would love to sail on a 23 and rent two berth spaces Saturday night from anyone who's game.

As an alternate, is anyone looking for two crew members (ages 48 and 11 with some sailing experience) on Saturday? Could we maybe catch a lift on a boat back to the Captain's Saturday night (if anyone is heading back)? My main goal is to get a first hand look at a CP23 and talk to some owners. I'm thinking about getting a 23/2 at some point if I fit in vee-berth, can sit upright in the cabin, etc. I'm 6' with a tall trunk.
BTW, thanks to JT for the private messages so far. Too bad you can't come this year.
If no one needs crew maybe Emily and I could at least meet up with the gang at the beach to look at the boats. Looks like there's a land route there.

Well the first question is what kind of beer and how much?
If BBB 2014 becomes a reality and you make it down, you are always welcome to sail aboard my 23 which is a 23/2, vintage 1985. It's really not setup for mulitiple sleepers as I have removed all the v berth cushions because I store a lot of stuff up there. I'm sure if you take the drive all the way from Vermont, we can find some kind of space for you. I myself like sleeping out in the cockpit in dry weather.
I think once you sail on a 23, you fall in love. I did. She's great in light air and can take pretty heavy weather if she's reefed early. In my opinion, she's proportionately perfect.
Keep checking out the BBB thread to see how it's unfolding. And there is a land route. Island Beach State park has a single road almost down to the southern end. There is parking and bathrooms not far from where we'll be anchoring.

That's fantastic, thank you very much. I've been doing a little reading here about Koinonia and look forward to seeing that custom foil rudder. I will definitely make the drive down to the Jersey shore for a chance to sail a CP 23. In fact, a CP 23/2 is exactly the model I'm thinking about getting next season if the stars align. I'll probably find it some distance from Vermont, have it surveyed by someone working near where it is located and trailer it back here.
But in the meantime, I've never seen one in the flesh much less sailed on one. I'm hoping, going by the posts above, that BBB will indeed be happening and I've got the dates marked out. I'm serious about bringing beer and other supplies as my contribution to the event so simply tell me which beer, how much you'll need and what else I can bring.
As far as falling in love with the CP 23, aesthetically I'm already there. What a gorgeous traditional boat. Now I can get sense of what its like to sail and move around in.

Based on what I'm hearing from the CLR guys, you might not be able to physically carry the quantity of beer that Bob can ingest during a long weekend. Or afford it for that matter.
Pack your SUV to the brim with PBR. And if you have a roof rack, make use of that as well.

Sean: We'll figure out a way for you and Emily to attend the BBB. I'm sure you'll love the way the 23 sails. I've never sailed aboard anyone elses 23, so I can't compare mine to any other ones. But from what I hear, Koinonia's habits and idiosychrisis are the same as all the other ones.
And don't worry about stealing threads: If there were jail sentences for this, I'd be doing life!

There are only a few rules at the BBB. First- have fun. Second- be reasonalbly safe. How that's determined is up to you. Third- no political discussions. It gets too heated and divides people. The third rule is from me so If you want to rant about it, send me a PM. I can take it!
It needs to be repeated that this is a weather dependent event. With the exception of dinner and/or lunch at the Captains Inn or elsewhere, everything we do is outside. A terrible weather weekend will all but cancell this event. But we're a long way off from any reliable forecast. At Tice's, you should bring anything you want to eat, drink, read, wear, etc. There is nothing there except beautiful beaches on a narrow barrier island with a somewhat rustic bayside. No roller coasters, cotton candy, or boardwalk although most of those are available just a short trip north at Seaside Park.
This should be fun, if we can pull it off. As far as me providing entertainment on Saturday night as was mentioned previously, I wouldn't count on it. All of us together will be the entertainment. Hopefully most of the Yahoos will be gone by then. More soon,

I believe my wife and I are ready for anything you folks can dish out on Barnegat Bay as we did a four day cruise on the upper Chesapeake over Labor Day, only getting off the boat to swim. I think we had enough food for the crew of a clipper ship returning with a full load of tea. And, best of all (I have been told and have the bruises to prove it!), we are still talking to each other, and it is not by phone or through our lawyers!! So let's have everybody start their good weather dance so this gets off the ground or in the water, whichever is the better element for the Bash. For those of you with sweet teeth, I can be coerced into bringing home-made cookies to pass around; perhaps even some jet-propelled brownies (you can never have too much chocolate...). Well, everyone probably thought I forgot about you all. But, nay nay. Bash update:
We can launch at Townsends Marina (ramp fee- 5 clams) and there's a place to park vehicles with trailers for free on the marina property. Slip fees at Captains Inn are a solid 50 bucks, couldn't negotiate him down. If we meet on Friday afternoon, boats can be launched, tied at the slip and then dinner at the Captains Inn. After that, it's off to the boats where we could congregate, tell lies and have a few drinks. The Tiki Bar isn't far from the boat slips so it could get noisy.
Saturday morning, it's breakfast time and we could go to the Forked River Diner where they serve both kinds of food: Healthy and not! It's a bit of a walk but we could drive there.
Then it's sailing over to Tice's. Looking ahead, even though the weather forecast is too far off to be accurate, they are calling for cooler weather so bring your woolies, mates. As I mentioned previously, there are no food facilities at Tice's. What ever you want to eat or drink, you should bring with you. I have a 2 burner stove on board as well as a propane grill. And...a french press for real coffee in the morning. Remember, this is a very loosely organized event and the main reason for it is to hang out, get to know each other and swim in the ocean. This is an unguarded beach, meaning no lifeguards.
In the event of really bad weather, I may suggest cancelling this event because, aside from eating in restaurants, there are no inside facilities of any kind.
That's it! We'll see how it goes. Now...who is committing to this foolhardy adventure? Are ya with me mates?

Yes, we're still in! But my brother can't make it, but his son with the CP-16 still may if he's feeling comfortable sailing solo.

Emily and I are in for sure and are really looking forward to it. Right now I'm on a train in Germany headed to a work thing but I'll be back in the states late Monday. Can't wait to meet you all and to finally sail on a Com Pac 23. Have never even seen one in the flesh yet. Thank you all, Bob especially, for welcoming the newbies.

Hi Bob. I'm not sure where we are launching from exactly. From last years experience, We learned that Barnegat is a little too far if the winds are not favorable. I was going to check out the free town ramp on the Oyster Creek just south of forked river. If that doesn't look good for some reason, we will head up to the Forked River to launch.
It's a bit of a sail from Barnegat to Forked River or Tice's but if we have southerly winds, not bad at all. Northerly winds means a lot of tacking but nothing wrong with that? I'll leave that up to you...you know your boat.
I'm not familiar with the free town ramp on Oyster Creek. If I get a chance, I'll try to check it out in person. Any info on directions, lat/lon?

I found the oyster creek boat ramp on ActiveCaptain.com. The oyster creek is just south of the Forked River. It has a large parking lot. It's off of Dock Avenue in Oyster Creek town park. I've never been there, but it looks promising. If interested, copy and paste these GPS coordinates into Google Maps address bar. And it will zoom right there.

Well, it seems that BBB-2014 is nearly upon us. Let's hope the weather gods are with us. This coming weekend looks great. It'll give me some good work hours to finally get Pegasus off her blocks! Yeah, her bottoms been dry all summer long. Mucho going on in the backyard since the sewer replacement last Spring. Hiring a landscape contractor isn't in the budget, so, it's all on me.
I'll be launching from Cedar Creek Marina (Bayville) because my friends Dario and Alex (you remember Alex?) will be there. Yes, they plan on "crashing" our Com-Pac party with their brand-X sloops. So, it'll be Pegasus and 2 escort vessels heading to Tice's for the rendezvous of the year.
Looking forward to meeting up with all at the Captain's Inn Friday PM.

It seems that the tides are exactly opposite of what may be ideal. I'm thinking of possibly putting Pegasus in the water early Friday afternoon at Cedar Creek. That'll lessen pressure trying launch at low tide. This only affects me since I'll be using the Up-the-Creek Marina which has an "interesting" ramp.

The BBB 2014 is almost upon us! I'd like a head count for Friday nights dinner at the Captains Inn. Time may be about 6:30-7:00 if that works and I'll call for reservations.
Temperatures here in the South of NJ have been chilly in the mornings. As I write this at 6:10 am local time, it's 52 degrees so expect high or even mid 40's in the mornings. Maybe a bit warmer because we're on the water. Bring your woolies, hats or whatever you wear in cold weather. I'll have a dingy with me but otherwise the walks to the beach involve wading through the bay water so you'll get wet.

Gee, Bob, I seem to be like a reed in the wind. I'm still not sure where I'll launch Pegasus, however, I will be at the Captain's Inn come Friday PM.
Pegasus' wheels are finally on the ground and I've been working furiously to get her shipshape. Of course we are going to get hit with a deluge tomorrow (Thursday) but the weekend seems to be shaping up quite nicely.
As far as wading in to the beach, no problem, I volunteer for rowing duty! Ha, ha! What's that about 3 men in a tub?

I've decided to launch from Cedar Creek where there is more tacking room and I don't have to depend on iron wind, hopefully. Hope tomorrow dawns bright and sunny. Still have much to do before dragging Pegasus to the bay.

I don't want to sound cheap here (has nothing to do with not taking crabs as alternate currency), but is there a place to be on the hook after launching at Tice's or must we be in slips to be close by for Saturday's breakfast? I am assuming that there is a group breakfast Saturday morning as I believe it was mentioned at one point.

You would be launching at Townsends Marina where the ramp fee is 5 clams, each way. There is parking available on site at Townsends. The slip is at the Captains Inn, which is within walking distance to Townsends and, although I've tried to negotiate down, they remain firm at 50 clams a night. I'm not thrilled about that kind of money but I don't think there is anyplace to drop anchor on the Forked River although if you see something, I guess you could. Trust me, I'm as cheap as they get and this will be the highest per night slip fee I've ever paid in my life.
There are breakfast places within a short drive so if we could pile in someones car and eat breakfast together, that would be great. Due to this event being put together at the last minute, we'll have to work some details out as they go. It should be evident by this time that we are kinda winging it but it will be a great time. Anytime on the water with friends and Compac yachts can't help but be fun! I will try to arrive at Captains by mid afternoon, hopefully ahead of everyone so as you arrive, give me a call.

A bit of brain-fade there as launching from Tices would be by helicopter, I suppose. So, slips it is. I have a 6 passenger crew-cab pick-up for Sat. a.m. if we need it.

The only place you might anchor on the Forked River is on the South Branch, right before the Beach Blvd Bridge. There is a fair amount of current that could complicate matters. It is not too far from the Capt. Inn. Alternatively, the south side of the mouth of the FR provides an anchorage spot adjacent to the park, but the best anchorage is on the north side of the river mouth in Cissy Cove, with good depth almost to the shoreline. The marsh area provides plenty of bird sightings, and I've over-knighted many times here. You would need a dingy to get up to the Inn, or you could motor up the river and the Capt Inn allows slip use for diners (for free, at least in the past). All BBB Compactors- have fun for me. wish we could be there!!!
The BBB 2014 is now history and as Bob, the chief instigator of said Bash, probably won't be home until later in the week as he had to beat down the bay into a southerly, I thought I would steal his wind and state categorically that all that attended had a wonderful time, especially Marty & Pegasus. This is apparently the only way I can steal his wind. By Sunday, there were four boats in attendance representing NJ, PA, DE and MD. There was a probably first ever timed dinghy race, won by our astute sponsor. There were extenuating circumstances to that win, however. As he was perhaps only a half or third the ages of the other two contestants, there was a distinct advantage there, not to mention his consuming at least one of my jet-propelled brownies AND at least one cup of his own brew of some sort of rocket-fuel coffee immediately prior the race. All that, and his intimate local knowledge of the bays tides, currents and weather, guaranteed his win. Oh, and did I not mention his 'professional' rowing experience? But in truth, we all had a jolly good time bashing about in his dinghy. Perhaps we will see what happens when the HOTC rolls around. (details to follow as that is a teaser. Those of you that think you know about and what it means shall remain mum as per the contract).
I will have to see if my photos can be posted from Picasa, where I usually load them. I know Skip sent me some directions about doing it from Photobucket, so I will have to check that option out also as I have never used it.
So there you have it so far. Good fun, good food, good weather and most of all, good company.

Good golly, I forgot to mention the Bash's Saturday night kazoo orchestra aboard Koinona. Something NOT to be missed in the future...

The Sargasso Sea. Not a place that brings happy thoughts to sailors in the Bermuda Triangle. The sun beating relentlessly, the glare off the still water burning the eyes. How the heck do you get out of here? And what appears to be an island over there, could it be Gaia? Thoughts of a floating ship graveyard in which vessels get caught in the seaweeds and never get free again, turning the vessels into ghost ships. Is this my fate? Wait, I can feel the bottom with my paddle. Seems to be about half a fathom. Put on my water shoes and slipped into the still water. Bottom is soft, but with Pegasus relieved of her skipper's weight, she became nudgeable. Beneath the still water I could discern what appeared to be a small sand bank where I could hopefully gain purchase and get Pegasus on the move again. Whoa, Pegasus! Free at last, she caught what little air there was. I heaved my bulk over the gunnel and we were finally on the move. I carefully tried to retrace my original course to avoid repeating the adventure again. I guess I'll have to read Victor Appleton's Adrift in the Sargasso Sea to learn just how lucky I was... but wait, I digress.
The tale starts the previous evening in Forked River, NJ where I met up with friends, new and old. It was the start of BBB-2014 (Barnegat Bay Bash). Our small party met up at The Captain's Inn where we drank and dined in a fine atmosphere. Present were Bob23 of course, our illustrious leader who had invited new friends Sean Patrick and his lovely daughter, Emily. Sean and Emily had traveled seven hours from Vermont to learn about the virtues of ComPac 23's. Also, from Maryland, were Brad and Lilly who trailered in with their CP19. So now we had full representation of vintage ComPacs. We enjoyed our meal and company and then retired to our respective berths.
I spent the night, which was quite cool and very damp, on the hard in Pegasus' cabin. This was the first time I have slept in the cabin. As advertised it is quite cramped but I did manage to get some shut-eye. Then, about 2 am, I heard some folks walking by Pegasus remarking, "How do you get in?" "I suppose you climb in through the hatch". I guess they noticed the step stool I use to gain access when on the hard. Well, they passed on and I took some safety precaution by reversing the hatch board so that the hardware was now inside and the hatch acted as a lock providing some security. Of course the inevitable finally occurred with Nature calling. This was about 3 am and as I returned from the sojourn into the nearby woods, I passed another couple walking past Pegasus... at 3 am!? Oh well, back into my not so comfy quarters.
Come the morning, we gathered again and motored (with Pegasus in tow) over to the recommended Colonial Diner via my VTV (Volvo Tow Vehicle – my 250,000 mile plus 1990 wagon) where we all enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Bob and Brad were already in the water and I soon had Pegasus off the trailer into the drink. Shortly I met up with the happy band and we were off to Tice's on Island Beach State Park, just north of Barnegat Light. Long Beach Island is a barrier island along the Atlantic coast in New Jersey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_Beach_State_Park).
The trip to the bay went smoothly utilizing auxiliary iron wind. The Johnson 2hp pushed Pegasus along quite well, until the opening into the bay where it simply said, "I think I've had enough..." and quit. Oh well, I hoisted the main and caught the breeze and we were off. After a bit, it became apparent the CP16 was not able to keep pace with the larger CP19 and 23. Also, I hadn't been able to set the jib because of choppy water (and maybe a little bit of chickeness). Soon, I lost sight of their sails. Then I made a mistake... I tacked south, mistakenly thinking I had departed from Cedar Creek, not Forked River! Of course it wasn't too long before I discovered just how costly that tack would be. Which brings me back to the "Sargasso Sea".
After finally breaking free of the clutching grass, I beat northward to try to rejoin the others. Things were going well and then, again, on a tack to the east, the wind dropped off, eventually dying completely! Now what to do? No air, no motor. I went into survival mode. I did have my portable VHF and was in contact with Bob (For sure he'll report), but the sea is so large and my boat so small! I dug out my paddle and tried paddling a bit. Well, paddling 10 feet to reach a dock isn't quite the same as paddling a half ton boat a mile or so. It wasn't getting any cooler and the sun was dropping to the horizon. I had to do something. I had brought along my trusty MinnKota trolling motor and its battery. But, I had been working on the electrical system and there were no wires between the battery (forward of the compression post) and the motor (mounted on Pegasus' stern ladder). After pondering a bit, I decided that I had to somehow drag that really heavy battery out of the cabin and into the cockpit. And that I did with much effort. Of course I couldn't just plug the motor in, it didn't have compatible leads any more. So I bared the leads with my trusty knife (always have a very sharp trusty knife) and wrapped them around the battery terminals. Voila! We had power! At the same time, we were hailed by Dario and Bill (sailor friends) who had been monitoring the VHF and knew of my predicament, "Don't worry, Marty. We're coming to get you."
Shortly Pegasus was in tow heading for Tice's. What a relief! More to follow – things do get better, much better!!!

Cathay, Sophie and I had a great time, and we're sad that we had to cut out early on Sunday. It was wonderful meeting you all!
Sunday morning, after a bit of motoring, we hoisted the sails, and had a nice trip back to the Oyster Creek ramp. There was enough wind from a favorable direction that we made it all the way back to the mouth of the creek on a 4 mile long, close reach without tacking once. It was a beautiful weekend.
This week, not only will I be remembering the good times of the weekend, but in my spare time will be trying to figure out what the heck Brad's HOTC teaser means!

A mid-winter gathering sounds like a grand idea. Do you think that Bob will be back at his mooring by then? Perhaps he should have given more thought to one of those ultra-quick 19's... Of course, he will probably have some smart aleck retort about having no knowledge of such a thing existing... On the other hand, he does play a mean kazoo, along with Emily, Marty and Sean. What an orchestra! (photo proof available) Perhaps a performance at the winter gathering? Stories and lies, they're all the same; none of us let details get in the way of a good story.

What a fantastic weekend. Bob was talking about how many people miss the beauty in NJ because most of us end up seeing it from the Turnpike or GS Parkway. Tice's Shoals (and the beach on the other side) are certainly gems of the Garden State. We loved it and playing in ocean waves was my 11 year old daughter Emily's favorite part. I want to thank all of you for welcoming us and Bob, especially, for welcoming us as guests on his boat. Turns out the three of us seem to make a decent sailing team. Emily enjoyed every single one of you and I think all of you ended up exploring the shore and beach with her at one point or another. Thanks very much for that.
It was a relief and pleasure to finally have Marty back with us at the rafting for dinner and conversation on Saturday. He'd called Bob on the radio saying his motor had quit heading out and that he was now grounded about 200 yards off shore. Having just about reached Tice's then we doubled back towards the marina to find him. Having then just about reached that other shore we discovered, via a new radio conversation, that Marty was grounded on the opposite shore *near Tices*. Ready about and off we went that way.
Bob and I learned that we should now ask the crucial question: "Which shore?"...!
Heading back towards Tice's on a new search for Marty, he radioed to say he had gotten moving and was sailing towards the anchoring area. The last transmission we heard was "I'm almost there. I can see your flag. Wow, that's a big flag." Assuming all was well we headed in for a swim and a hike to the ocean side.
It was great though because we ended up making multiple crossings with excellent wind and a tight to medium reach each time - just delicious sailing. In fact, the first time we reached Tice's we thought: "Oh no, it can't be over yet." With perfect wind and weather like that we were not ready to drop sails at all. All in all I think we ran most of that bay round-trip three times and could have easily decided to do more.
Alas, the wind died down before Marty could fully reach the anchoring area and, well, he's told us the rest. Later that evening (after he had made it in on a tow from Alex I think) we ended up towing him the short distance over to our raft-up and, finally, we could all enjoy food, fellowship, Marty's muffins, Brad's brownies, Lili's salad, my hot dogs, etc. Mike and Cathay (on their shiny and almost spankin' new boat) were great additions to the raft-up the next morning.
Emily loved Sophie the dog in particular and there was lots for us (the humans) to talk about in common.
Coming back Pegasus and Koinonia sailed together (to keep an eye on each other) and, with the jib up, Marty's boat is pretty quick. I think sailing that boat without a jib on Saturday took some doing. Fortunately, Marty is this philosophical, intelligent, humorous man who seems to take these things in stride as part of the story of a life. And any time someone brings up a tough day on the water, he's now a got a great "Did I ever tell you about the time..." story to tell.
It truly was wonderful company on one the greatest fall weekends one could hope for. A real pleasure. Hat's off to you Bob for organizing this and for taking a couple of initial strangers on your boat.

Thank you all for making the long and short trips to attend this epic event. Of course, if you weren't there, there would be no event! YOU were the event!
I cannot add too much to what's already been said except that I'm reminded that, although we love our Compacs, it's really about the people that sail them. Once again, it was a wonderful experience to reunite with old friends and make some new. As I experienced at Carlyle Lake, it was the same at the BBB: reuniting with old friends that I'd never met. There's just something about the kind of person that is drawn to a Compac. Those that experience this know exactly what I mean. Not quite a cult following but darned close.
Brad and I did indeed engage in a dingy rowing race and that guy has a great strong stroke. If fact, if I hadn't sabotaged his race, he'd surely have beaten me! I guess he never noticed the cement block I tied to the dink "Little Fellow" before he cast off. He also does a killer New Joisey accent complete with a combined Maryland/Boston slant. Talk about a unique dialect.
Both he and Lily are wonderful people who enjoy life and being together on thier CP 19. I truly am blessed to have met them. They are obviously meticulous planners and hauled food item after food item out of that little boat. Maybe carrying all that food created a handicap for the inevitable race. Or maybe we were just faster! We had some wonderful talks, walks in the bay and, of course some friendly bantering. It's what we do.
Although Brad is a proud 19 owner, he seemed to have a keen interest in the transom of my 23 so I, being the gracious and humble guy that I am, gave him many opportunities to study the look of the vanishing stern of Koinonia. 3 times! I think it may be engrained permanently on his brain!
As always, it was great to see Marty again. We met at a BBB, have been to 2 Mid Winter Gatherings and hopefully many more. He and I share our love of Volvos but the difference is I don't own one. Yet. But If I ever buy a P1800 and take up Volvoing in place of sailing, you'll know who to blame. Marty is Mr. Perserverence in my book, and despite some navigational and mechanical setbacks in Saturdays sail, he made to the raft up.
I only had a few breif moment to gab with Cathay and Mike as they arrived on Sunday morning to join the raft up. After Brad and I raced, we tried to get Cathay to give it a go but she repeatedly declined, deciding not to crush our fragile male egos by beating us handilly. Thanks, Cathay, and hope you guys can make it to the Mid Winter Gathering.
It was a wonderful pleasure meeting Sean and Emily and having them stay on my boat. Sean is knowledgable about many things and we found we shared not only our love of sailing but BMW motorcycles as well. He had a particular interest in the 23 and I will be disappointed if he doesn't show up next year in one. He was already planning major interior renovations- to the 23 that he doesn't own yet! I really enjoyed haveing Sean skipper the 23 most of the time. It gave me time for more important things, as follows:
Emily and I instantly became good friends as we discovered our mutual love for potato chips. Although scheming how we could eat both bags ourselves without sharing, we soon came to the mutual moral conclusion that sharing is the only right thing to do and agreed to give the nearly empty bags with the crumbs to the other members to divide! Of course, we did none of those horrible things and did indeed share the chips. We also found that we both like waterfights and, rather than leave that knowledge on the academic and theoretical shelves, decided to go for it and soon we were both soaked and laughing like, well, little kids. She has no excuse- she's 11. But so what if I'm 50 years older? Aren't we all in a sense, kids in grownup bodies? We had a great time swimming in the mightly North Atlantic together. Emily has wonderful manners and is quite possibly the most polite and well behaved 11 year old girl on the Eastern Seaboard, quite possibly the entire country.
As you longtime readers of past and sometimes lengthy posts know, Koinonia is pretty picky about who is allowed on board. There are many folks she has no paitence for and is pretty vocal about it. Sometimes embarrassingly so. Not so with Emily and she's asked me to relay this message Sean: "Emily- it was a true pleasure having you aboard and you are welcome back anytime. Next time, you really must take some time at the tiller- t'would be an honor being sailed by you. And I'm glad you don't snore like your dad!" Now now, where are your manners, boat?
As alluded to above more than once, I did indeed have a long sail back. We left Tice's about 12:35 pm on Sunday, sailed into the river and headed for the Captains Inn where I encounted Don, the Dockmeister who initially practically refused us entry into a slip to drop off Sean and Emily because of a fundraiser, but changed his mind when he learned I was paying my 50 clam slip fee for Friday night. What a guy!
After a quick dropoff, I backed out of the slip under power without hitting anything! I know what your'e thinking: either a miracle or a lie! Motoring out of the river, I realized that I did indeed have a long trip. Once in the open bay, I commenced having fun by taking some long tacks and I was sailing with full sails and having a great time. I soon realized that I may be out there for a long time if I continued under sail alone so enlisted Miss Nissan, size 8 for her assitance. Instanty she came to my rescue. What a girl: does she have any sisters? After 2 hours of motoring with the wind and tide on my nose, at 6:30 I tied up Koinonia and sat back to enjoy a most colorful sunset.
Again, thank you everyone for being there. There was a past BBB where only I showed up and the company was boring, to say the least. I think next year, I hope to be more proactive and plan The BBB 2015 for earlier in the season when the days are longer. Sunday morning dawned bright and beautiful. After the previous days misadventure, I slept like a rock, first for 6 hours, then for another 3 ½! In between, we were woken by the arrival of a very large helicopter which hovered over Tice's for several minutes. This also created an opportunity to gaze at the most beautiful sky chock full of stars, especially Orion where we may all originate from!
The happy band enjoyed breakfast together and then settled in to enjoy the day:
The first event was the rowing race which Bob won. Brad took second and I a very close third (5 seconds). Not too bad for a septuagenarian (can anyone pronounce that?). Then it was off to the beach to enjoy the sun, sand and waves. The weather was perfect, the waves were four to six feet and we all turned into 17 year olds and body-surfed as long as we dared. Emily really had a great time getting beat up by the Atlantic. I believe that she had never actually been in the ocean before.
By now it was getting time to leave Tice's and head for home ports. The sail back to the mainland was everything a sailor could hope for. A steady wind of 10 to 15 knots off the port bow allowing Pegasus and Koinonia to fly. We too, didn't have to tack to make it back. Too soon! Pegasus sailed into Forked River under sail power except for the last 500 yards. Then the MinnKota did what it was designed to do and the sailing weekend was over... bitter/sweet indeed.
Looking forward to our mid-winter reunion where memories can be revitalized. And perhaps the meaning of HOTC can be discovered. I think I know what it means, just having trouble with the "H"... any hints?

Well, my blabbering is not over.
I need to also thank Sean for doing some last minute emailing to secure a complete roster. And as Marty so rightly stated, the stars at 3:30 am were spectacular and I really enjoyed sleeping in the cockpit to enjoy them. I started out inside but was awakened by the feel of the 3 rafted boats "not quite right" and the 3 of us brave male skippers reconoitered the anchor lines to ease things up a bit. After that, I moved outside and dozed until just before sunrise whence I rowed to the beach, witnessed another beautiful NJ sunrise and took my ritual sunrise swim in the ocean. I try to this each and every time I visit Tices.
Just as we are doing with the CLR gang, lets exchange Christmas cards, ayuh? PM me your address's, I keep a running list and send it out when it gets complete. This could be fun. Whatdayasay? Ayuh? And JT, if your'e lurking, send me yours too. Even though you didn't make it this year, I know in spirit you were there!

As JT indicated, I too have been lurking throughout the planning of this epic event with the hopes that the stars somehow would miraculously align themselves giving me the opportunity to join you folks once again. Unfortunately the job has been keeping me hostage 10 to 12 hrs a day since January and the backlog of work seems endless. This is a " good" problem, I suppose, but it leaves little time for the fun stuff. That all will change as retirement looms in the near future.
I am very pleased that the "bash" went so well and thank you for all the reading pleasure. Thankfully we were able to get the Madame in the water on that Saturday and when we tossed the anchor for lunch Suzie and I raised a glass of vino in the spirit if BBB 2014. Bob you are so correct when you said " There's just something about the kind of person that is drawn to a Compac."

We did indeed miss you Allen. BBB 2015 is just around the corner, as time flies by swiftly these days. Next year maybe we'll have a full house! And maybe Marty will have an event-free trip. I'd talk to the big Red Man about a new outboard, Marty. Does Volvo make an outboard? Now that would be cool and so fitting!
Now, now Brad: I would never steal another mans chips. Might borrow a bag or two but never would I steal. My favorite: Cape Cod Sea Salt and Vinegar altought the Guacamole that Emily suggested sounds great. I haven't been able to find them down here. This girl obviously knows her chips!

I don't if Volvo still makes an outboard (Volvo Penta), but they certainly do make one of the best, if not the best, inboard/outboard drives. Might take a bit of whittling to make it fit. Of course, the weight would probably pull the little CP16 to the bottom!

Starting at the left: Santosha, a one year old Legacy, Blue Heaven, a 19-2 (with Emily on the bow of her favorite boat), Koinona, a 23 and off to starboard, Pegasus, a 16. Marty apparently is visiting from a foreign land (PA) as he has his courtesy flag flying from the starboard shroud (!).
After I recover from this, I will post some more photos from the spectacular BBB 2014.
