It is so cold I used the remote starter on my 4Runner this morning even though the truck was still in the garage. 18 degrees below zero!

-11 degree F. with winds out of the 'Nort' at 22 knots.
Beautiful normal frigg'n day. Feeling for the animals.
One chickadee needs around 220 black oiled sunflower seeds a day to survive a night like this.
Have not seen a low this low for 18 years.
As bad as it is up 'Nort' the Lake effect snow hits Lake Shore drive in Chicago. Just 160 miles South.
Staying home and reading a good book. This is about 1/3 of the World's population succumbing to flu.

Hayward, Wi.....................27 below this a.m. and if that is not cold enough wind chill 47 below and not much better tommorw, can spring be far behind? .............nies
It was 61 in Raleigh this morning; now 46, heading to 11 tomorrow morning.
36o right now going to about 50o and raining. But we were colder last week if it makes anyone feel better. :)

Yup, we are back in balmy Wisconsin. I volunteered to stay in Orange Beach and continue boat shopping, but for some reason Brenda didn't see things the same way.
Mike
85 and sunny here in NJ! Girls on the beach, beer in the mug, sails are full and bay water is warm....huh, where am I? Oh, I dozed off....dreaming!
I don't think about the cold...I work in it.
Bob23
10 inches of snow----(-25 wind chill)-----after much effort that 40 year old case garden tractor started and i spent the last three hours plowing the snow off the driveway. should have built the house closer to the street i think.
I feel your pain :o Man oh man......global warming took the last few months off here in NE Ontario. Its a bit warmer today (long cold spell) and about another 10 inchs of snow last night. I passed the Suncat today in the shed. boats look so unhappy in a shed with snow all around.
How cold is it? So cold that my tounge stuck to my cereal spoon at breakfast! So cold that when I got a speeding ticket I pled guilty and begged for the electric chair. So cold that we had to thaw out the dog so he could chase the cat....
Seriously.. It's so cold that I thought I had a pebble in my boot, turned out to be one of my toes.
Actually it's 36 in albuquerque right now. Split some wood today and am enjoying a warm fire in the stove.
So cold Bugs Bunny shoulda turned south in Albuquerque.
It was - 10 or so (No wind chill factored in..) in Carlyle, hate to think what it was at work. Carlyle was hit super hard, I am going to guess between 14 and 16 inches.
The road to Nashville (Illinois) was impassable, and north of Carlyle was also shut down due to a house fire and fire trucks getting stuck......
As a matter of fact I spent about 3/4 the day yesterday using my little electric blower and my hand shovel to get paths made to help keep it easy...... turns out the damn wind (really biting!) caused drifts like crazy, even forming a 4.5 foot drift across my neighbor and best friends driveway along with about 3 feet deep in my own driveway this morning.
After about 4 hours today, 2.5 in his and 1.5 in mine, we were dug out...... Sadly it would have been faster but my grandpas tractor being a diesel had gelled up...... first time he has ever had that happen.
I go to work tomorrow, which seems as if I willbe the first to make it in. I am the only one besides my boss with 4wd, and I am a bit nutzo I guess..... really I should just stay home, but money is nice, and 2.5 miles away, I could walk in my cold weather gear really.
I will end this with the numbnutz of the day picture......
This township guy (Who is supposed to know our roads) ended up plowing REALLY short of the actual road.... Instead of traveling between the STOP SIGN and the ROAD SIGN, He decided this (very super outrageously meticulous dudes) lawn needed to be the new road.
Then they brought in a grader and tried to pull it out by pulling it deeper in, instead of pulling it out the way it went in, which in turn broke the axle of the truck.
ENJOY my tax dollars being spent stupidly.

I literally think folks around here lost their minds over this snow..... the stores were empty, and people were insane.....

A balmy 7.9 degrees and dropping here in NJ at 0556 hrs. West winds gusting to 30. And my Siberian Husky just went out to relax on the back deck! Gonna be a fun day at work!

This is what it looked like Friday in Bucks County PA. Yesterday morning all the snow was pretty much melted and now it is about 8 degrees outside and the wind is howling.
Not a ton of snow here, maybe a couple of inches, but about -6 temps and howling wind.
After hearing what I thought were pipes cracking last night (boy the house makes lots of noise in this cold), I checked the upstairs guest shower which lies near an outside wall, which I failed to let the water drip. Forgot about the fact it was near an outside wall until later in the evening.
Sure enough, no water came out of the faucet. Placed some space heaters nearby, knowing full well there would be a leak to clean up. By 5:00am the defrost action occurred, water was pouring down the walls into the kitchen and basement. Going to have to destroy that shower to fix it due to wall access issues. Needed remodeling anyway, but was hoping to put that off until next year.
Ouch! We can relate Mike. When we returned from Orange Beach on Jan. 1st we walked into a house and read our thermostat - 33 degrees. Someone's backpack or luggage must have rubbed against the thermostat when we were leaving on Dec. 21st and turned the furnace off. Six frozen pipes and one frozen drain. Happy New Year. Fortunately we were able to defrost them all without bursting any lines.
So the first night back we spent thawing pipes out and the second night I got to remove 12" of snow from our really long country driveway. Now it is friggin' negative 15 degrees outside. Do you think we're ready to move south yet?
Mike and Shivering B
High today is ONLY 58* and we're FREEZING down here in SW Florida. Even had to turn my HEAT STRIP on to raise the house temp from 67* to a comfortable 70*.
But it's only temporary, because temps start rising tomorrow and Saturday/Sunday it will be 84*!
capt_nemo
Capt Nemo,
Your comment reminds me of my dad. He would talk about the blizzard of 1957 in San Diego. After a long buildup, he'd explain he had to light the pilot light on the space heater out in the hall because of the intense cold. ;D
Capt Nemo....84 on sunday eh....well.....from ALL of us locked in the "minus ??" catagory, I have one thing to say:
BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA to you!!
;) ;D :o >:( >:( :(
Nemo:
I know personally that you are a fair guy so I'm sending you down a bottle of NJ cold. After it's empty, please return the bottle with some FL warm! Any flavor will do!
Bob23
Greene, you got sooo lucky without any burst pipe! Glad to hear. Crazycarl also was tending burst pipes today. We've got the leaks fixed, yep two pipes burst, but the damage it took to find the bad sections took some toll on ceilings, drywall, and a shower. In three rooms including one bathroom under the problem that we just replaced top to bottom. Cough. :'(
So to answer your question, how cold is it? It's so cold, we took everything out of the deep freezer in the basement so we could huddle inside of it to stay warm! :D :D :D
'Tis the season I suppose for the North/South ribbing. I'll be sure to return the favor come hurricane season. ;D ;D ;D
if it wasnt so damned cold i would go out in the garage sit in my boat and pretend i was sailing. i have the luxury to be able to just sit in the house and watch it snow. nowhere i have to be. it was pretty though.
Yep, and no CLR DVD this year to get through the cold, dark winter.
I think we should fire the guy that makes 'em...
Our Great Lakes fleet has not even begun to make port yet. BayShip only has two freighters [and their both Canadian] in as of today [07-January-2014] the 'Boys' are still out to sea and our in-town Coast Guard ice breaker, Mobile bay, has been breaking ice for 17 days and no word on her return.
Their should be about 18 taconite oar carriers coming in. Ten will be 1000 footers, like the three shown rafted together in the photo below. ... if they don't get stuck in the ice. The St. Lawrence is closed for the winter.
Aside from Cleveland their is no other port they can winter in.
They should be shipping out in March to begin the season of 71 or so round trips between the mines and smelters.

Todays Post-->This Was Getting Silly-the Fools
I know an old lady who swallowed a goat,
Just opened her throat and swallowed a goat!
She swallowed the goat to catch the dog,
She swallowed the dog to catch the cat,
She swallowed the cat to catch the bird,
She swallowed the bird to catch the spider,
That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside her,
She swallowed the spider to catch the fly,
I don't know why she swallowed the fly,
I guess she'll die.
U.S. Sends Polar Star Icebreaker to Free Chinese Icebreaker
Sent to free Russian Ship stuck In Ice
That Shouldn't Be There If Global Warming Was Even Slightly True,
That They Set Out To Prove
PS - It's The Middle Of Freakin' Summer Down There
The United States Coast Guard is sending the Oregon-based icebreaker Polar Star, capable of breaking 20 foot of ice, south to the Antarctic to free a Russian research ship that got trapped in ten foot of ice, and also to free a Chinese icebreaker that got trapped in the ice while trying to free the Russian ship. An Australian icebreaker also was unable to help. The 399-feet long Polar Star can break ice that's six feet deep, at a continuous rate of three knots.
The Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy with 52 passengers was on a four-week expedition to follow the path taken a century ago by Australian explorer Sir Douglas Mawson.
One aim of the expedition was to track how quickly the Antarctic's sea ice was disappearing because of global warming, but a blizzard and thick ice caused the expedition to be abandoned on Christmas eve, despite the fact that it's the height of Summer in the Antarctic.
The Polar Star, which recently completed a three-year, $90 million overhaul, is responding to a request from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the rescue-operations coordinator, the Coast Guard said today. The ship, 399 feet in length and able to continuously break 6 feet of ice at 3 knots, [20 foot by laying on top of it in a ram-backup-ram program], is specifically designed for open-water icebreaking, with a reinforced hull and special ice-breaking bow.
...
The Polar Star left Seattle in early December on a mission to break a channel through the sea ice of McMurdo Sound to resupply and refuel the U.S. Antarctic Program's McMurdo Station on Ross Island. The trip is the Polar Star's first since 2006 for one of its primary missions, called "Operation Deep Freeze."
So, from one pole to the other. Let's not make the obvious wise-crack, that this now makes her the Bipolar Star.

Hang on, should be there soon, good buddy!

It arrived yesterday- THANK YOU! I opened it immediately, poured a tall glass and it's already up to 25! That stuff works great! Supposed to go into the 50's on Saturday. And I liked the coconut flavor! Can't thank you enough!
Bob23...thawing.
(Maybe you could send some bottles to our frozen members just west of here)
18 below again this morning. Please send us the 100 proof version of heat in a bottle. This really sucks!

It was so cold here that I had to chop up the piano for fire wood... I got 2 chords.

To ALL those caught up in the DEEP FREEZE,
At the suggestion of Bob23 (in a post above), I immediately set in motion the FLORIDA EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM, asking millions of folks connected in Florida to assemble outdoors wherever they are at high noon on Friday January 10, 2014 to execute "Northern Rescue Plan B".
"Northern Rescue Plan B", for those unaware, calls for millions, repeat MILLIONS of Floridians to face DUE NORTH at the appointed moment, take a very deep breath and EXHALE vigorously until almost all air is exhausted from their lungs.
This SINGLE, COOPERATIVE, HUMANITARIAN action by MILLIONS of your countrymen exerts a pressure differential vortex, which forces the plunging POLAR VORTEX back northward into Canada, thus relieving our Central and Northern Tier states of the abnormal below zero temperatures.
Take heart dear friends, RELIEF is on the way!
capt_nemo
Capt Nemo - Don't do it! The simultaneous inhale after the great Floridian exhale will only exacerbate (Wow, did I really type that ?) the polar vortex by decreasing the low pressure found at the vortex leading edge. Timing is crucial! More later after the effects of the interior warming elixirs have worn off.
TG
Tim's right but the disaster he speaks of can be averted by divinding the group into 3 and having them inhaling from the 3 remaining compass directions. I think Nemo, obviously experienced in this sort of thing, already knows this and has instructed the millions to inhale thusly.
Thank you, Capt for remembering us. Hopefully next summer, we can reciprocate when you are in a sweltering heat wave!
Bob23
TG & Bob23,
Got your message in time TG, but sorry, too late to change anything.
The Florida Emergency Notification System (FENS), once activated to broadcast a message, CANNOT be changed or recinded. (That's what happens when you accept the lowest bidder!)
Nevertheless, have no fear 'cause Bob23 is absolutely correct in assuming that I, capt_nemo, would certainly put my two engineering degrees to good use and instruct all participants to INHALE from the other compass directions. Heavily weighted to the south, of course, to bring up even more WARM moist air from the Carribean.
Hope the Plan works and takes care of that "Pesky" Polar Vortex, sending it way back from whence it came. At the very least it should serve to moderate most of the hard hit areas across our Nation.
At least I know that the FENS works in getting the word out, judging from all the local radio and TV coverage last night, and the swarm of my neighbors that showed up outside just before High Noon to do their "duty".
GOD BLESS AMERICA! And, a slightly warmer and Happy New Year to ALL!
capt_nemo
Again, many congrats are due the good Capt Nemo. It's already up to 41f up here with a Saturday high of 59f forecast. I did notice a faint aroma of coconut, orange and rum. A nice very welcome bonus. Your plan worked just fine. Hey- this could be the solution to the climate change that's bugging everyone these days! I'd patent this, Capt...we could make a fortune together.
Of course, if we ever reciprocate, you may notice a distinct garlic, olive oil and provolone cheese smell...Basic stapels for us Guidos from NJ!
Bob23
Bob23,
Thanks, glad the weather has improved somewhat and lifted the spirits of ALL Com-Pac Owners smitten by the dreaded "Polar Vortex".
As far as this coming summer in SW Florida is concerned, "...a distinct garlic, olive oil, and provolone cheese smell.." would be most welcome, as long as it is driven down by a COOL, DRY, NORTHERLY BREEZE! Besides, I love Italian Food.
Keep the home fires burn'in and THINK SPRING!
capt_nemo
It's down right spooky what gets dreamed up here. Even scarier what gets done without any responsible oversight.
I think we dodged the bullet this time. But wow, just WOW. :o
;)
mel
Wow, what a change from when this thread started. At this moment I'm in Biloxi, MS and the temperature is 73, mostly sunny with light breezes. Too bad my boat is 300 miles north, however, temps there not too bad either 56 and sunny, with west winds at 14. Either one of those weather conditions is a mid winter sailing trigger. ;D
Life is Good.
It was 65 degrees here today in Southport NC.
Yes my wife and I set sails for a couple of hours.
Nice afternoon.
You never know what kinda day you'll get here in the coastal carolinas.
We do have to take it when we can.
Spring is coming, right?
-Fred-
Down here in Oz it is summertime, but our TV news has been full coverage of the extreme cold much of the US has been suffering. So far we have been having a cool summer, apart from a few hot days near Christmas. That changes tomorrow! We are expecting 43 degrees C, (109 F), and hotter still each day until a cool change on Saturday. Can't go sailing to cool off, with temperatures like that, the bushfire danger in our area will be extreme and I can't afford to leave my wife alone to defend the house and pets if the worst happens.
Oh well, global warming I suppose, you freeze, we fry - on average we should be comfortable!
Cheers,
Sulfur dioxides spewed from our Earth's active volcanos has been reflecting the sun light back into space, cooling thing off just a bit.

Tim, that was a good one!
As my grandfather once told me "It is so cold I am about to starve. I put my biscuits in the oven and the door froze shut and my biscuits burned up".

Mac :D :D :D
We just arrived in Sedona, AZ this afternoon. Temp = 66, sunny, sailing weather but the nearest lake (flowage) is two hours away.
112 degrees here today. Strong hot winds from the North West, BIG out of control bushfire in the mountains twenty miles to the North West. Smoke everywhere, cinders starting fires ten miles ahead of the main fire front. Time to put our fire fighting plan into action or leave. Fire being fought mainly from the air as it's still in the mountains at the moment, if this wind continues it should hit the grasslands and farming areas this afternoon. In these temperatures and winds we will have a fast moving grass fire heading our way. Our best hopes are pinned to a predicted wind change with an associated cool change this evening. This will at least give the fire fighters a chance to control it. (Also a wind change will steer the fire away from us, but of course that puts some other poor guys in the danger zone.)
Ok, time to catch the cats and put them in their carry cages, grab the important documents, computers and memory cards, a few clothes, hitch up the boat, load the Jeep then wet every thing down here and get out.
Could really do with some of your cold wet weather, send it now please.
Cheers,
Really? Holy cow! So much for summertime down under. We are seeing snow and 9 degrees above zero. You can have it.
Well, get out of the way of the fire.
I suppose the best way to head is behind where the fire has already burned.
May not be able to sneak around that way ... but going 'down stream' into an area not burned yet is not good either.
Hummmm. Call a lateral.
Be safe, hoping for the best for you and yours.
Save the Legacy! skip.
Thanks Skip, the hoped for wind direction change came through last night and the fire changed course before our town was damaged. I was very thankful for that, but feel guilty that my relief is at the expense of others. The police have evacuated three towns to the north of us that are now in the fire's path. Some people refused to be evacuated and exercised their right to stay and defend their homes, some of them died.
The official policy is "Leave and Live. But leave early!" It is always hard to do that, but with a fire like this which is so big and ferocious that it is creating its own weather system, trying to fight it with a garden hose is futile. So, I'm relieved and all I can realistically do for those now in its path is pray for rain.
Cheers,
People stayed and died? For a few things that might be burned up? Tragic
How stupid people are. It's totally avoidable. I guess it cleans the gene pool.
My college minor was O.S.H.A and our class at I.S.U. traveled to a 'building' at U. of I. and as we climbed out of the bus we were ushered into this building and walked through a maze and up three stories of stairs. During the class 100% of the lights winked out. Only a few exit signs, but not viewable. The room and hallways filled with peppermint smoke that burned the throat and watered the eyes and the class was told to " find your own way out. " It was down on your hand and knees. Best air here was mid ships. Bad air at the floor and at the ceiling.
Well we all died in theory. It was a great class.
Dad told me as a 'squid' in the 1930's Navy, their on board ship fire fighting training at Great Lakes was manning a hose and knocking down a bunker oil fire. As soon as that goal was accomplished, the fuel was relit and they had to knock it down again. Nothing to fear, "get 'er done."
Well it snowed all yesterday. Knee high to a grasshopper, and I was digging out three dumpsters behind the store. Big wind and falling temps. -1 deg F. Ouch to move.
skip.
Totally agree with you Skip, most of the people who stay to defend their homes have them fully insured anyway. The way I look at it, they are just defending the insurance company's interests. Three fatalities among stay and defenders in the local fires, it was thought to be more originally but when all the confusion died down some people who were reported missing turned up unharmed. The fires are still burning but are contained to the forest areas of the National Park and will burn for weeks or until we get major rains. As long as they don't break through the control lines the fire fighters have in place they shouldn't be a threat to people or property.
Temperature here today is a delightful 75 degrees Fahrenheit, light winds, time to go sailing.
Cheers,
I have a buddy here in the states that flies all around fighting forest fires, and saving homes. He is a interesting character, really enjoying his work. He sails a CAT30 or 31 I cant remember, but it is in a slip and waits for him to fly in and use it. He doesnt have a place to live and makes a lot of money, constantly moving around, and then going sailing every chance he gets.
Anyway, he built a really cool setup one time to protect some cabins. Worked off of the supply water, and was a series of pipes and spriklers that saturated the ground pretty far out and then they abandoned it as the fire got close hoping the system would work. It did. I think he was recognized for it.
A person in Oklahoma did the same thing and after my father and mother in laws place burned down from a wild fire, the pictures looked pretty devastating until you came to this dudes place, Bright green grass, all buildings in tact, nice trees. Amazing looking amongst the black charred mess.
I am glad you made it through. It is amazing in life how long it takes to amass what we own, and how quick it can be all gone.
Mac
How cold is it? Well yesterday this is what I was doing with bright sun, 60F and winds WSW at 9mph. About 4.5 knots with Spin alone. Today 35F for a high, overcast, winds NW at 21 gusting to 30 MPH. What a difference a day makes. ???

Snow-mageden
9 degrees (F) in Hammond, Indiana. We've had about 14 inches of snow so far today. I thought about driving by the Marina... but they said they have even more snow there.
Come on Spring!!
Left home at 6:30 am yesterday in Petawawa Ontario to drive to Florida. It was -31 when we left....COLD all 14hrs I drove yesterday! Man...even filling up was painful with the wind! We were way into SC today on I-95 before the snow under trees finally dissapeared!!!
We are in St Augustine now and although not "balmy"....its finally not chilling!!!
Wow. I haven't followed this as close as I should have. Really glad you escaped the fire Pete. And I hope for the best for your neighbors too. The rest of you better hunker down 'til better sailing weather returns ;D.
Where I am on the west coast the temperature isn't bad, maybe high 20's at night to (lately) 40's-50's during the day. The concern here is lack of precipitation. Places I normally see eight feet of snow this time of year are bone dry. No snow pack anywhere to speak of. We're having Red Flag Warnings for fire risk..... in January! Doesn't bode well for next summer.
Please send snow.
