I did a search and found a comment in another thread, but not really much discussion.
I'd like to install a deck pipe big enough for the chain shackle to fit in. Yeah, I could put a small one in, and just put the rode in, but I'd just rather put it all down there.
Also, the only other boat where I had a deck pipe was my old Suncat, and there was a mast stub down there to tie off the bitter end to. Is there something below for that? Sure, I'll cleat the line when I let out the scope, but hey, I'd like a little fail safe working for me. The suncat had a small pipe, where the shackle wouldn't go down in, so that's why I want to choose the right pipe for this boat.
Anyway, what solutions have you folks implemented?
Quite a while back, I put an oval one on my 23. 'Tis big enough for a very small dwarf to climb through. Of course, I can't remember where I got it...probably Defender...have you looked there?

Cheers!

For my CP-19 the pipe is only for my anchor line. The clevis and vinyl coated chain stay on deck and the anchor on the roller.
The smaller the whole on deck the better.
skip.
It is pretty easy to do with a Rotozip. I put one of these in:
http://www.boaterbits.ca/stainless-steel-oval-hawse-pipe-with-hinged-lid.html
Just trace the shape of the pipe over your original chain pipe hole and then cut it out with the Rotozip. Be sure to position the new pipe so that it isn't in the way of the line feeding from the chocks. I used butyl tape to seal it up.
I put a U bolt below to tie off the bitter end of the rode. Originally I had it tied to a piece of PVC that wouldn't fit through the hawsepipe.
Shawn
Thanks for points made, and examples. Not sure when I'll do this.
Re the ubolt below for bitter end, did you glass it in, or what? I will need to look in the locker and see what I could actually put there. Oh, and I like that tie it to the pvc idea, too.
Shawn:
That looks similiar to the one I installed. Mine has a nice feature, maybe yours does too: When it's opened, if the cover is slid sideways, it locks and stays opened. The hinge is spring loaded to keep it shut when closed.

My 23IV came with that feature, however, I just learned of it about a year ago. Seems I learn something new about this boat every time I go out. Until I found out about the sliding lock, I would just slip the lid under the furling line which passes just a few inches from the pipe. When done stowing the rode, I just lift up on the furling line with my foot and let the spring loaded lid snap shut. Come to think of it that is probably easier than using the slide lock. :)
I bolted the U bolt through the plywood that divides the chain locker in half.
Bob, yup, mine has that same feature. Very handy when feeding the rode back in.
Shawn
Good idea with the U-bolt...better than loosing all that line! I use red tape for the 20' and 10' marks on the rode but I should add the U-bolt.

Karma,
Thanks for the scoop on the ubolt and the rotozip.
Do you have a picture of the location you chose for the pipe installation?
I have tried to get a picture of a deck pipe on a CP-23, but haven't succeeded yet. I have taken a look at other boats in the marina, so I guess I can try to locate mine similarly; however, if any of yawl can take a picture of yours, and post here, that would be awesome!
I am figuring that since this will be a new hole, I will need to put epoxy in to seal off the hole prior to installation. My epoxy needs or at least recommends 70 degrees. I'm wondering if that means I need to wait to do this, or if any of you know something that would work in cooler temps.
Thanks,
Bruce
I am curious to see a picture of the oval deck pipe. Particularly a picture on a boat where someone has changed out from a round deck pipe to the oval one. I just bought an oval deck pipe and I will be changing it out next week.
This is also a bit more complicated because I have a chain stop right beside my old deck pipe. I need to remove that and put it in a new location. I already needed to move it since it was there for a smaller anchor and now that I have a 22lb lewmar claw the stop is too close to the anchor.
Anyway, I am betting that this newer oval pipe will make putting the anchor rode back much easier.
If anyone can post a pic I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks!
Not quite a replacement. I kept the round one if I decide later to divide the locker for a second rode.

I took a slightly different route.
In addition to leaving and using the original small round pipe, I added this oval one (from Defender, me thinks). I keep 100' of 1/2" line in the original and 150' of 5/8" line in the oval. Down below, I divided the area into 2 separate chambers so that the lines never mix. The main anchor is always attached to the 1/2" line which, in the waters I sail in, works just fine. I've been out in 25 knot blows overnight and the anchor, which is a Danforth knockoff homemade of stainless steel, has never dragged.
The 5/8" line is for a bigger anchor that I can carry on brackets attached to the bow rail. On top of all this anchor-craziness, I carry a small forged Danforth with more 1/2" line that's used as a lunch hook or a second anchor. Not being a fan of swing at anchor, I deploy 2 at about 90 degrees to each other and, along with the riding sail that I fly, swing at anchor is reduced greatly.

Thanks for the pic. I never thought about angling it. I will probably take a look at the inside of the chain locker before I install the new pipe. Your chain stopper is in a neat location but the shank of my anchor may be too long to do that since I went up in anchor size.
I agree with the 1/2" line. I am wanting to replace the rode with 1/2" line nylon braid.
My old CP 23 has the lights up front where others have their deckpipes. I'm going to have to put mine back a bit, maybe on the flat part near the raised area that has the cleat.
Below, in another thread, I discussed the wiring for the lights being loose in the anchor locker, and I'll put them in a piece of pvc against the bulkhead.
Here's how the oval deck pipe turned out for me. I'm pretty sure a longer anchor shaft would just barely fit to the side (my anchor is close in the pics but will slide to starboard).

Hey Jim:
Make sure you wire that shackle shut. If Murphey's in town, that thing could back out leaving that nice anchor on the bottom...or worse: your boat on the hard.
This should look interesting when I am done. I am glad to get rid of the small deck pipe because it did make it a challenge to quickly put the anchor rode back. Nothing like being single handed in a windy crowded anchorage and trying to stuff rope and chain down a small hole! LOL
My deck is getting crowded up there. I have the tack line for the spinnaker, the furling line for the furler, a chain stopper, and the deck pipe. The halyard for the spinnaker is tied off on both ends to the bow pulpit too so it is busy up there!
Thanks for the reminder Bob! I took everything apart for the annual Semco application. Trying to launch this weekend but the list keeps growing.
Deck pipe installation on Com-pac 23. I have an oblong deckpipe I bought to put in. I got this kind so the chain will fit through it. I got an idea from a friend to start the hole from underneath, so I can put it where it needs to go for the rode to hit the chain locker. Next steps would be marking from outside to get the placement and orientation right. Any further ideas from yawl folks?
Here is the deckpipe on my Compac 23.
I have a 22lb lewmar claw up there. It works well for what I do.

I have the same one and the original factory pipe as well. I keep 2 separate anchor lines stowed in separated compartments. One pipe for each line.
Bob, is your oblong deck pipe in same location as Heave's ?
No, mine larger one is aft of the bow rail. And the small original equipment one is at about 7 oclock in relation to his large one.
Thanks, Bob; these pictures above are the farthest forward I have seen them.
Thx for bringing up this subject and the pictures. Mudlark has an original, round pipe that has seen better days. Not sure I'll get to it this season as my primary project is to lead my main halyard to the cockpit and make a few electrical repairs, but it's on my list.
When I put in my deckpipe I just used the old hole and enlarged it.
In my fore-peak the Previous Owner put a bucket in there for the rode and chain to sit in. That worked for the old arrangement with smaller chain and a smaller rode, but with my 1/4" chain at 30 feet and my 100 feet of 1/2" rode don't really fit in there. Underneath the bucket I have some concrete in a small bucket for weight to balance the boat out a bit. I wonder if I removed the bucket if the rode would get hung up on the small bucket with the concrete in it.
What do you guys think?
