Title: Used sails for Haitian fishermen
Post by: Jason on December 10, 2013, 02:55:13 PM
Hi Everyone

I sailed my 16 with the original 1981 sails for about a season and a half, then during some less-then-perfect boat handling in gusts over 25mph last year, I ripped the mainsail about 2 feet along the leech.  I bought a new jib mainsail and storm jib from national sails and I sent the old jib and mainsail to an outfit in Florida that provides used sails to Haitian fisherman that still use small sailboats to make a living.  The sails we may discard could likely be better than what they have.  I'm sure my ripped main could have been stitched up and reused and hopefully it was.

Food for thought, and I thought I'd mention it in case there were a bunch of old sails out there looking for a new productive life!
