Title: removing stansions
Post by: kickingbug1 on December 06, 2013, 02:17:02 PM
if i do get this 19 ive been dealing for. i will probably have to remove and refinish all the teak and re-bed same. i also thought i would remove the life line stantions and re-bed them as well. my question is how do you get to the bolts with the carpet in place. the bolts are easily seen under the carpet. should i just cut slits in the carpet to get to the bolts or remove the carpet?

Kick - I've done mine. I slit open the carpet perpendicular to the hull (one large slit exposing all four nuts, not four small slits at each nut), spread the split area apart and held it open with clothespins. After re-bedding I used a small can of carpet mastic (Home Depot carpet dept) to reglue the carpet. Use it sparingly. The seam is invisible.

This is a GREAT application for re-bedding with butyl tape, because of the considerable force on and potential movement of the stanchion bases. If you haven't already, suggest you read Compass Marine's DIY post on this. Note the idea of countersinking the deck side of the bolt holes to provide a pocket for the sealant. Smart.

I second Wes' statement.
The Butyl Tape I recommend from SailRite, only because I used it and it was great stuff
