Title: Sailing
Post by: hunterb4 on November 26, 2013, 12:35:33 PM
Hi Guys,
Bob Burgess here.  My most sincere thanks to all of you who took the time to tell me what my book Handbook of Trailer Sailing meant to you. It was of considerable interest to me that many of you mentioned that the last chapter that told about trailering our two ComPac 16s to Key West and sailing on to the Marquesas was for them one of the best parts of the book. Which made me wonder if you readers would be interested in more of my sailing adventures and how they turned out. So, in time I rounded up all those trips that I had written for sailing magazines or in chapters of my other books and put them all together in one very big book on that subject. It just came out with 420 photographs and I though that some of you might like to know about it. Sadly no traditional publisher was willing to take on that large a book that might be of interest only to sailboaters. But Amazon has provided the wherewithall in an e-book format that any of you can read if you have either a Kindle device or cares to have the free reader installed on their computer. The book is being offered for the princely sum of $4.99. If any of you care to read it here is the link. Title is SAILING TO ADVENTURE: The Time of Our Lives. The link is
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GQKOM2U

Let me know what you think of it.

Regards,

Bob Burgess

Bob,

I read and thoroughly enjoyed Handbook of Trailer Sailing, thanks so much for your stories and Com-pac specific writings.
They do mean a lot to the Com-pac community.

The Admiral just purchased the new book for me on Kindle.   ;D

Do you still sail the 16 or 19?

Hi Salty,

Thank you for your kind words. Yes, I still sail both ComPacs. I had put rolller furling on the 19 and enjoyed it so I added it to the 16 and it has been great. Also sail my Hobie 16 named Kat Baloo and am putting a sail on a kayak next spring.

I hope you enjoy the book. Give it a review if you do. And please give my best wishes to that very thoughtful Admiral of yours. We all need Admirals like that with such good taste.

all best,

Bob

Bob:
This is very timely for me as I'm just in the beginning planning stages for a trip down the Chesapeake next year in my trusty Compac 23. Although the "venue" is different, I'm sure I'll learn much. Thank you...looking forward to reading.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, Bob!  I have informed the Purser that I would like a copy of your new book for Christmas.  But while I have you on the line, let me ask you a question:  How much Swiss cheese?  (See page 213, Handbook of Trailer Sailing.)

Good for you and your Purser, Tom. Ideally, if it is to be a main dish 1/2 pound of Emmentale Swiss and 1/2 pound of Gruyere Swiss makes a fine fondue. We sometimes carried the ingredients ashore with a small backpacker's stove and made it on the beach beside a driftwood fire. Terrific. Have a great Thanksgiving yourself and thanks for the contact, Tom

Happy Thanksgiving!

Not sure I know what this response with a quote is supposed to be but wanted to tell you Bob that I envy you that trip. You should have a ball doing it in your 23. I live so far out in the boonies that I have no contact with sailors period. Wish we were closer and could do some of these trips together. My last book covers lots of adventures and they were all fun. I've found that the more you can keep all these things simple the better you are for it.

Happy Thanksgiving to you too.
Bob

For Gerry and any of the others I may have missed responding to, I appreciate you reading the book and always benefit from any feedback good or bad about my books. I'm always glad to answer any questions you care to lay on me and can always be reached quickly at hunterb4@gtcom.net if you care to contact me directly about something rather than tying up the forum. Often on these things if the question is such that others might benefit from my reply I am glad to post it on the forum where others can read my response as well, if that's okay with the questioner.

all best,
Bob

Bob, It was your story that appeared in Cruising world 1980, cruising in the Florida Keys- that got my interested in the C-16.
I went down to the factory in Clearwater and  picked up a new one in 1981 and equipped it for cruising. I even made the bimini top based on the article in the Handbook, that has served well for many years ( a clever design too). Now 32 years later I own another 1983 Cp-16.
Thanks for the many fine articles Bob.

Ah, Mike, I'm so glad to hear that. Writing is a lonely job. I often wonder if there is anyone out there who reads it and cares. People like you who give me feedback let me know that it wasn't all for nothing and that someone else was able to share in the same adventures of sailing that I love so much.

Thanks so much for your kind words. They mean more to me than you will ever know. Youmade my day.

No problem Bob- glad to give you some feedback. I guess an author never knows how much their stories can influence readers.
I think that first story in CW "set the hook for me "on how to equip a mini-cruiser like the Cp-16, for comfort and sleeping aboard.
After I did some mods on my new '81 boat, I set out on a 5 day single handed cruise of Tampa Bay- it was great. So you never know.

So true, Mike.  Most readers are like me, if they like an idea they go with it without taking the time to tell the author. That's why I appreciate it so much when people make a special effort to let the author know that they appreciated his suggestion. It's the feedback and sharing of that special information as on this forum that we have always appreciated.

Glad the customizing for comfort info worked for you. It is always fun for me to find ways to solve a problem so that the enjoyment of the experience is better.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob,
Like many others, I'm sure, I thoroughly enjoyed the original book. When I first stumbled on to "Handbook.." I had a Macgregor 26. After selling it, moved to WA state and bought the first Compac 16 I could find; your book provided the influence.

Now I have a 19 and a 23. See what you did?? <grin>

So, you have another "fanboy" - I'm buying it now!

Shawn, it's good to hear about your ComPacting adventures. I'm sure glad it's a good boat because if it happened to be one of those we all know that when it runs into a dock it falls apart, then everyone who got into the ComPac business from my Handbook would sure be after me....Talk about me being lucky!

Whew!!!

Cheers,

Bob
