Title: Want to Buy Suncat used
Post by: Lstrayhorn on August 16, 2013, 12:09:56 PM
Any Help would be appreciated. I owned a Hunter 26 and as a trailer boat it was a serious chore to rig and launch.  With my research I have not found a simpler rig to trailer and launch. My internet search seems to find Suncats that have sold so I thought the collective brain power of the forum might steer me in the right direction... Appreciate the help

You are correct....there is not a simpler, faster, easier boat to trailer-rig-launch period!!! Where are you?

Lstrayhorn,

As an Owner of a Sun Cat I can also attest to the quickness and simplicity of the rigging process. It just doesn't get any better than the hinged Mastendr Quick-rig Sailing System employed on these boats. With mainsail always left bent on, and everything remaining connected except the quick-release forestay, we're talking just a few MINUTES at the ramp for launching and retrieval. Other sailors, if present and observing, are absolutely GREEN with ENVY!

All of the Com-Pac cat boats are very easy to rig and launch. I bought my 20 foot Horizon for that reason. Perhaps 10 to 12 minutes trailer to water vs about 2 hours for a wing keel Catalina 250 and 75 minutes for a Telstar 28 trimaran. Besides having an easy to raise mast, leaving the flaked sail on the boom is also a real time saver. You can do that because the mast hinge is above the lower boom position.

How have you found it to rig your Horizon cat? I have seen some posts concerning difficulties with the Mastender system

"How have you found it to rig your Horizon cat? I have seen some posts concerning difficulties with the Mastender system"

The mast is light enough to grab, lift up to your shoulder level, and then walk forward to raise it. I've got a bum right shoulder and I can still do it. Before the shoulder injury it was very, very easy. It must weigh around 40 pounds or so. The problem with the mastender system is that the gin pole is not really high enough to exert any significant upward pressure on the mast until you get to around 45 degrees or so. About 95 percent of the force exerted by the winch is pulling the horizontal mast forward and not up. A longer gin pole would greatly reduce the effort. I have no idea how the kids on the video did it with the winch. Maybe the boat was actually upside down?

You only have to put the sail on once a year - when it gets launched in the spring or ??. The mast, hinged above the lowered boom, sail and gin pole, folds down on top of it. Put the sail cover on and then lower the stick. Job done.

All of the Com-Pac cat boats are nice. A friend has the Picnic cat.

Frank's correct. " there is not a simpler, faster, easier boat to trailer-rig-launch period!!!  "

We have a Sun Cat in our Wama-Lama lagoon in Sturgeon Bay and boy is it nice.

That boat, plus two others from our lagoon ... two CP-19's, came across The Bay of Green Bay from
Sturgeon Bay to Marinette [Michigan]~Menominee [Wisconsin].

I walked through both towns from 10:00 am to 5 pm on Friday and Saturday. Exploring. Most of the little Ma and Pa stores
I enjoyed last year are no longer in business this year. And not one cop did I see! Both towns are financially dead. Everything is for sale.

The 26 members of the local U.S.P.S. boat club spent a great weekend across the pound. Friday to Sunday.
We had our annual get-to-gather at the last fine restaurant in the town. Berg's Landing.

skip.

Depending on what you will pay and how far you are willing to travel, there are Sun Cats available. If you search onecraigs.com and sailingtexas.com you should find examples in the $12K to @17K.
A nice looking Sun Cat rig sold in Texas last week for about $12,500.
As a guide,NADA has price range based on year.
Good luck. Hope you enjoy the search.

You can also try searching this in google:

site:craigslist.org com-pac suncat

Some of the listing you will find this way will already be sold, but you can quickly scan through the results for a craigslist location near you that may still be an active listing.

Thanks I am going to try that now- My spouse seems to be leaning to the Sunday cat as we have two Golden Retrievers  that she like to take to the lake.

I have a 2001 SunCat. Bought it in 2006 and I think Ive used it 6 times. I am considering selling it. Its in real good shape. I just wash and wax it. Its on a trailer in my driveway. If anyone is interested, its near Orlando Florida, I'll make a list and email to you with pics.
Please do not respond unless solidly interested, not just scouting.
