My jib roller furling is not attached right. I know its standard Schaefer gear. It is not mounted with a pad eye and it looks like there is no room for it since it would be in the way of the anchor chain feed and running lights are on either side of that. 23' 1980 sloop, without a bow sprint.
any advice would be appreciated, I do not want to add a bow sprint.
Pictures, pictures please! Teams of trained experts (and a few bozos too) standing by.
Like Wes, Pictures please.
I have worked on a number of Shaefer setups and They do differ from one another.
I am assuming you have a drum issue?
Mac
here's a (bad) shot of how mine is rigged to one of the two bow tangs. It's an older Schaefer

I think at least one wrap around the furler drum is necessary AFTER the head sail is rolled up tightly as photographed.
You don't ever want to come to the end of the line without the sail fully furled.
I actually see no problem with the set-up, so this puts me in the Bozo category.
"No room" for what? Why would a pad eye be necessary? I see the head sail being just a tad 'mis-shaped' because the sail will touch the bow pulpit near it's tac. No big deal.
[I really, really, like that 1930's Motor Yacht in the posted photos.]
skip.
Hey Skip: thanks for a reply but I think the drum has to be attached to the stem head or with a pad eye. The previous owner had it just dangling by the jaw pin of the drum. upper jib furling unit was attached to the upper swivel unit attached to the forward stay, and the furling line did not have a lead line out of the drum, apparently just pulled out to release jib by the clew. That can't be right.!

Yes I need to see a picture of where the drum is mounted, or improvised to mount on the stem of the bow because it must not touch the headstay. Right now it is attached at the base of the headstay with some sort of small tang attachment both coming from the same fitting placement at the bow. The furled jib does not touch the headstay, but it does not look like it has strong support since it is on a split headstay attachment.
In order to take a picture I will need to put the whole reefing system like the previous owner had, to show you what I mean
It sounds like you have a major cluster kinda like a Ranger I am working on now......
Definitely need pictures in order to tell exactly what it is you are talking about.
Previous owners, and some current owners will from time to time do things that are completely stupid..... I have seen it many of times. Over engineering the simple things.........
Why you have 2 forestays is beyond me unless you have a baby stay, located roughly 3/4 out from the mast to the forestay but this doesn't sound like it at all.... sounds like someone wanted the ability to hank on and roller furl, or some kind of madness.......
The only other thing I can think of is maybe you have a headsail forestay unit, where the cabled headsail acts as a furler...... the cable is built into the headsail...... if this is it, then I have limited knowledge but still some to share
On a 23 in my opinion that would be rare, and the distance is then decided on the sail itself, not anything else as the sail holds the cable within.
Pictures would be sure awesome,
Mac
There are installation PDF files on the Schaefer web site.
For snapfurl its http://www.furling.com/snapfurl.html (http://www.furling.com/snapfurl.html).
No pad eye on the deck is called for.
What model of furler do you have? We can look a Scaefer's pictures if you have none.
