Title: ready for the highway!
Post by: Koinonia on May 29, 2013, 04:39:38 PM
Koinonia was derigged and pulled out of the water today and is ready to go down the road to FL soon.  Shes got almost empty tanks to keep weight down since there is 50 gallons of water and 20 gallons of fuel, Ill fill those when I get there.  Something I cant wait to try is the high presure inflatable paddleboard which fits nice in the port side lazarette with the asymetrical spinnaker.  I thought I would put in a picture of the A frame mast lowering in action.

Wow, that is one serious trailering setup you've got there. My wife thinks it's scary pulling the 19 down the highway. You've got a real land yacht there. Pedestrians beware.

That is a beautiful trailer, what are you using to pull her? What kind of fuel mileage do you get at 60-70mph?

Thanks for the compliments on the rig/trailer.  Its overkill for the 27 but I do semi local hauls from time to time as well.  The truck is a 2001 F250 4X4 with the 7.3 powerstroke and auto transmission.  Stock I was getting a little over 9mpg towing the boat.  I recently added an intake and a 4inch turbo back exhaust so my turbo would spool quicker and I got around 10.5 mph towing a ranger 29 a few weeks ago.  The big reason for the mods was to stop the engine from having to drop down to a lower gear as much on steeper inclines.  Ive though about an Evoulution 2 programer but dont need it.

I've been getting about 9.5-10.5 towing my CP23 with a 1998 5.7L (gas) GMC with 3.73 gears, I was looking up supercharger kits earlier this week for the same reason you put on the mods, looking for a little more low end torque to keep it in 4th gear more. Given the cost, I can run in 3rd gear across the country a few times and still not recover the cost of the supercharger kit.

I went diesel for the mpg, also the torque is incredible.  Ive never towed anything as low to the ground as the 23 so Id be curious about the mpg.  Wind resistance is the big killer, the truck could care less about weight.  I also towed a S2 9.2 recently that weights in at 10,500 lbs and I still got the same mpg as towing the 6700lb ranger 29.  I was right at max legal height with that S2 as well.

Agree about wind resistance being the big MPG killer. Even with my smaller CP 19 rig, the difference in fuel mileage between 60 mph and 70 mph highway speeds is huge. I try to keep it at or below 60 for this reason. After all, once I arrive I'm going to be moving at 5 mph on the water. What's the big hurry on the highway?  8)
