Reading the posts and looking over the wonderful pictures of the Florida trips has me pining for another trip to the Keys.
I think it is time we have a Compac gathering in Florida.
Late fall, or early spring seems like it would be best for us that are snow bound and in need of early/late sailing fixes.
Vacations would need to be scheduled, so maybe a 2014 gathering?
I'm open to anywhere I could sail with those turquoise waters and warm weather when it is not so here in Illinois!
I can see a caravan of Compacs rolling southbound... Carl
I am completely on board with this. Whenever and wherever this takes place, I'll be there waiting with a cold one.
I would recommend the southern gulf islands, like Sannibel near Cape Coral. The waters are perfect, there is intercoastal bay sailing to the north, open gulf to the south, plenty of islands to camp, and it isn't so far and expensive as the keys. The islands there have the best beaches, the people are great, its probably how most people imagine the Caribbean or the Keys to be. I hope this place never changes so I can retire there in a few decades.
Second choice is Tampa Bay (yes that is a bit self serving). Anna Maria is one of the prettiest islands around, the bay has intercoastal, bay and gulf sailing, and always good wind. It is very centrally located, affordable, and camping is available.
However, if this is going to be a major trip for some people, the Keys is probably where they want to go. They Keys have only two beaches, expensive camping ($50/night), but on the upside, they have the craziest (in a happy way) people on Earth. There is a special allure and cache to the Keys (I'm a sucker for it) that some people will want. I would say that the best place to stay in the Keys is Key Largo. Key Largo gives access to the best diving, and excellent sailing including Biscayne Bay. I know that Key West is something to see and Bahia Honda is beautiful, but the sailing there isn't as good and those are well within daytrip range.
I know there are people who will disagree with these, and maybe camping or expense isn't a big deal to some people. I'm not bent on any one place, lets figure it out.
I'm in.
I am a bit bias towards Tampa Bay and the West Coast (after all, that is where all of our beloved boats were born). Port Charlotte is nice too.
But I would love to see the keys!
I am in If the schedule can work - I have a lot of work travel coming up.
My personal preference would also be around Sanibel. I am in Orlando, so I am driving anyway, though, so whatever works for most folks is fine with me.
Cayo Costa is a very nice State park I would recommend. Just south of Boca Grand Pass.
There is a very nice anchorage in Pelican Bay. The tourist welcome center/ranger park sells ice and water. There is a cool restaurant at Cabbage Key. And great water/sailing.
The West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadren goes there twice a year. Once in the fall and once in the spring.
But the keys do have scuba diving. Any divers out there???
Charlotte Harbor is a fantastic sailing venue! We have the Suncat Nationals here in early Nov and a great time is had by all! SW Fl is a fantastic place. So, y'all come on down!
I'm happy to see so much interest!
All these places sound wonderful.
The trip, for me, would have to be next year as I have to pick my vacations in January.
If we can get this "organized" for next year, it would give everyone a chance to make plans and have their boats ready.
It would also give us plenty of time to decide where and when to hold this.
Looking forward to reading other's opinions.
p.s. I'm a certified diver, but haven't dove in some years. I always have my snorkel gear on board.
Carl
Key Largo is a wonderful place with John Pennekamp Park with the only reef in the park system. They have boat ramps and lots of things to do. I believe you can also leave your rig parked there but not sure about that. Sailing on the bay side is like on large swimming pool with the average depth 6 feet and a sand bottom. I have spent many a happy day sailing the Bay side of Key Largo.
If it were planned well we could use Boca Ciega Yacht Club in Gulfport as a home base and hit some gunkholes. I gotta admit Charlotte Harbor or Pine Island Sound are very tempting. We sailed down from Gulfport a few years ago to Boca Grande and stayed a week in a cabin - shack really - on Cayo Costa - It was a great time. But we didn't explore Pine Island sound. After we got into island time we kinda forgot about sailing anywhere.
Here's the website for the club sailbcyc.org I would have to take it to the board for permission but that is just a formality.
I'd love to go to the keys-if you've been following my blog recently you'll know why that would be a major undertaking!
The best times of the year are Oct before the major cold fronts start marching or late April through mid May before the heat arrives. We prefer the spring season as the bugs are still groggy from winter. This spring the weather has been fantastic. I in our 20 some years here I do not remember it being so cool as in not hot so late in the year. Besides after Easter most tourists are gone. M
SW Florida, and specifically Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands is a wonderful area and, in some ways, even better than the Keys with more accessible sandy beaches and anchorages with "civilization" far enough away yet still nearby.
There are a number of us living and sailing in the surrounding area who, with collective local knowledge, could not only help organize such an event but ensure its success with our participation and collective hospitality.
There's Gulf of Mexico open water sailing, somewhat sheltered Charlotte Harbor sailing (100+ sq. miles), the Intracoastal Waterway, and a number of Gulf Islands with great beaches and good anchorages.
After all, THAT'S WHY WE LIVE HERE!
Count me in.

sanibel and coya coasta are great ideas and much shorter on the driving time for alot of people. There is also the Burnt store marina ramp which one of the members of my sailing club launched his Cape Dory 25D at, then there is the laishley marina where I have launched Koinonia at and will launch again this June. We will be heading out of Charlotte harbour and going south to the tortugas and keys. I plan on relaxing a couple days on the backside of Sanibel at tween waters then going to Pelican bay for a day or two before coming home. This will be happening in June this year.
I have to admit that if people are traveling a long distance the clear waters of the keys would be a nice reward! maybe a vote is in order!
I'm in. I've been to Key West, like it, but not sure it is the best venue for this gathering. I sailed from Jacksonville to Key West down Hawks Channel, lots of nice options. I've been to Sanibel/Captiva and really like that area. I've also sailed the upper Gulf Coast from Port St. Joe to the Alabama line. Some great sailing venues for this type of gathering, but may have to wait until May for this area because it may still be a little cold. October, however is perfect there but that doesn't get the snow birds away from the cold.
I almost think joining the Sun Cat Nationals, with an already established venue might be nice if accomodations are possible for more people/boats. After all, someone's got to check up on this Capt_Nemo fella to see what class rules violations he is cooking up with his sail plan. ;D Wait a minute, I remember now, there are no rules except what makes Tom Ray happy. 8) We non-SunCat folks can race PHRF (I could probably bribe the race committee for a favorable rating) and just stay out of the SunCats way. Rumor has it there is a Horizon Cat that goes down there and claims victory each year racing against no one. ;)
I retire this year and plan to spend a lot of time in FL. 2014 would be great and the description of the Charlotte area sounds fabulous.
Next spring would be great! If all goes well I will retire early next year and this would be a wonderful way to start.
Gary
A Compac gathering is a great idea. I'm from the central east coast, but would be willing to travel anywhere in the state.
....Dave
Don't even try twisting my arm. My hand is on the tiller right now, and Florida is on my horizon. . .
Preference is in the Keys but lower West Coast is fine with me.
Citroen/Dave in Lynchburg, VA.
Anyone want to caravan down the east coast?
That's a great idea lived in Florida over 30 years and sailed just about most of the state Panama and Pensacola are great sailing areas just about anywhere in Florida is great sailing
RF2 hull#003 Bouncer Bronson Fl
I would be very interested in making the long haul down from Vermont to join in on this. I have permission from the Admiral, and would just need to schedule time off from work.
If this happens in the spring, how early are we talking? Will anyone else be traveling down the east coast?
My preference would be the Keys also, but honestly I don't know enough about sailing in Florida to have an opinion. My one and only sail in FL was in Sarasota Bay, and it was beautiful.
What an adventure!
Hi Everyone and Happy Memorial Day,
My name is Dawn and as some of you know I LOVE this forum. :)
I am lucky enough to live here in the Keys. If any of you have any questions regarding the area please let me know. I've lived here 13 years but am new to sailing as of last November when I bought my first sail boat.
Dawn
Our boats were built for the sailing conditions in the keys!
from the responses, this could turn out to be a large group of boats. ;D
as far as when to have it, i vote for may.
as far as where, i love the keys, sailed there for 30 days in 2010, but i like the idea of being able to camp on an island and have a fire.
island camping will also allow those who are not comfortable with sleeping aboard a chance to come along.
maybe we need an official poll?
carl
If it ends up in the Keys, I'm in, Just need to know where so I have time to get there.... Sometimes takes me days to get there from Ft Lauderdale with so many anchorages and Tiki bars along the way!
Capt'n Jim
I propose either Cayo Costa, Port Charlotte on the west coast or John Pennekamp in Key Largo.
Both have good marinas, campsites, and anchorages.
And late April is a nice time of year.
Let's make it happen!!!
john pennekamp is nice, great snorkeling.
is there a good place where we can all launch, leave our rigs, and anchor out for the week?
islands are nice for those with 16s that prefer to tent camp on land. they also make meet and greets easier.
i know from experience spending a night on the hook in hawk channel can be an adventure, if we sailed the bay side, there is a nice marina we can launch from, and plenty of "islands" we can anchor off for shelter.
use the address or coordinates in google earth.
Pelican Cay Harbor Camping & Marina 299 Morris Ave, Key Largo, FL 33037 ?
25°13'58.81" N 80°25'44.87" W (http://xn--2513&-kia#039;58.81"%20N %2080%C2%B025'44.87"%20W)
i'm good with april or may.
perhaps we should take a vote for the time frame, then a vote for the place?
carl
Here is some current information on Cayo Costa State Park to consider when it is time to discuss PLACE.
I called the Florida State Park Office TODAY to verify some "Rules" that a Park Ranger gave some of us anchored (and beached) in Cayo Costa State Park several months ago.
BOATS AND ANCHORS MUST REMAIN IN THE WATER AT ALL TIMES.
NO FIRES ARE ALLOWED ON ANY BEACHES AT ANY TIME.
Otherwise, the Cayo Costa State Park is a great centralized area for a gathering of Com-Pacs.

Pennekamp has a very nice boat ramp with a lot of parking and a campground but their rules are a little restrictive about coming and going at certain hours. It is also several miles of motoring (or sailing) through channels to get out to the sea. Pennekamp is gorgeous and one of my favorite places, but I am still sorta leaning to Cayo Costa. I'll be there either way.
looking at google earth, i have to agree with cayo costa. there seems to be more areas for those who want to sleep ashore.
i think cayo costa would also be closer for most attendees.
any other suggestions?
carl
I'm with Bert. I'll be there either way.
My only objection to Cayo Costa is it is a 1-2 hour or so sail away from the vehicles and other civilization, like groceries, fuel, and such. Have to leave the vehicles at Placida, Bookeia, or Pine Island. No docks either, only anchoring (there is a dock but you can't overnight on it). But every thing else about it is great. There is a great little anchorage on the North East corner of the island in Pelican bay. Totally protected on all 4 sides, secluded beach, and a steep bank making the tides hardly an issue. And two minutes out into the open Gulf of Mexico. It is where the West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadren goes twice a year. Here are some pics from March of this year...
http://ftp.ij.net/wctss/wctss/photos101.html
They have small camp fires each year.....but if the ranger says no :(
Been looking at the bay side of the keys.
It seams to be a perfect place to take our shallow draft boats.
There's a lot of marinas and paces to anchor.
Dave
I thought this was a haiku for a brief moment.

+1 for Bert!
My wife and I have traveled quite a bit on land and water and feel there is nowhere as wonderful as the West Coast of Florida in January, February, and March. To make sure the temps stay warm, we've found that the Fort Meyers area is the furthest north you can guarantee this. If everyone feels the East Coast of Florida works best, I would suggest Miami and south of there for the same reason. The best part of going in Jan., Feb. and March is getting away from the worst and most boring parts of Midwest Winter and not having flies and mosquitoes of the Summer Florida.
Hope everyone can work something out. Getting away from the upper Midwest in those months makes a lot of us VERY happy.
Bay side of Keys is amazing. The "Lora Li" bar in Islmorada is a definate stop :o
i would like to see this happen between the 3rd week of april and mother's day. (can't fool with mother's day)
this is what i've come up with so far...
pensacola area: gulf breeze, shoreline park. we can leave our vehicles at the park for days and there are marinas and stores close by. we can also camp on the islands if necessary. we did the florida 120 last year, and this was the jumping off point. aprils averages: high temp 76* precipitation 4.32"
lattitude 30*21'5.53"N longitude 87*10'32.27""W
key largo (bay side): manatee bay marine (very trailer/sailor friendly) access to biscayne bay where it's a beautiful sail to elliot key which could be a "base camp" of sort. there is also close by boca chita key, once owned by the howells of bell & howell with their original home, light house, and chapel. also all the little bays and "keys" on the bay side to explore. +great snorkeling. aprils averages: high temp 82* precipitation 1.88"
latitude 25*14'10.28"N longitude 80*25' 57.47"W
cayo costa: i don't have any info on launch sites and i personally have never been, but many on this site do, and can give advice. google earth shows beautiful sand beaches and plenty of anchorages of safe harbor.
aprils averages: high temp 84* precipitation 2.03
latitude 26*40'25.18"N longitude 82*14'421.45"W
i personally like the idea of beaches/base camp because they will give us the opportunity to socialize and get to know one another. the lack of beaches in the upper keys would be the reason for a base camp at elliot. the waters are shallow enough to allow us to drop the hook and swim just about anywhere. however, it's a long day of sailing (17 miles as the gull flys) to key biscayne if one needed supplies.
so here goes. anyone who believes they have a good chance of attending, cast a vote for the place you would like this to happen, and at the end of the year (oct/nov) we should have a destination.
the coodinates are for anyone with access to google earth.
carl
I wonder if there is mosquito data on these choices. Beaches and food availability are a distant second to how bad mosquitoes are when I'm deciding where to camp.
i just remembered that there are cold water showers and bathrooms on elliot key.
mosquitoes, i was there in february so i don't know what they would be like in april/may. there weren't any in february!

I would be interested in hitting almost any place in Florida. I am pretty new with my CP23 only 3 weeks under my feet but looking for a trip to Florida next year and meeting up with you all would be great. ITs a long haul from Chicago, but would love to join in.
After reading the posts I had pretty much ruled out Tampa Bay area- IE St Petersburg, Clearwater but there are some advantages. You will save a day's drive each way since we are in the center west coast of FL. We can do a day trip to the Com-pac plant. With notice and board approval we can use Boca Ciega Yacht Club facilities in Gulfport. Ft Desoto Park, one of Leatherman's best beaches & a great on the water campground and excellent ramps are available. The 19s and 23s can anchor close by in protected waters. Its an easy daysail from Gulfport down the ICW into the Gulf and Bunces Pass. To get an idea of the area almost all of my videos are filmed in this area, but Navigating the Narrow Shallows is specifically about Mullet Key & Ft Desoto and St Pete Beach Gunkhole Cruise is in the same area. No matter where you go camping in Fl at this time of year requires reservations up to 6 months ahead. For those with more time - Caladesi Island, Three Rooker Bar and Anclote Key beckon -I will be posting more videos & blogs about this cruise. I have to disagree a bit with one post about timing. Local cruisers consider Oct AND the first half of May as the best months. Our opinion is Mid May because by then we do not have cold fronts, its too early for tropical weather and the serious heat starts Memorial weekend. Our recent cruise to Anclote Key from Gulfport was mid may - I have some pics on my blog. google map/satellite any of those names too. Some more good stuff to dream about :) Matt
The April timeframe mentioned above is getting a bit late. Bugs and heat... But, I will try to make it whenever/wherever.
What's the best way to gather input on this to get the max members involved? Survey? I could setup a survey and we could see what we get.
The West coast of Florida mentioned by Hideaway are fantastic and should not be overlooked. I am a bit biased by spending my entire life on the West Coast of Florida. I live in the area of Crystal River and this area is beautiful as well. The area is known for the beautiful spring fed rivers and abundant natural attractions and wildlife. I particularly like Cedar Key as it is a very cool place. Cedar Key hosts a couple of paddling and small boat events yearly. There is also a Nature Coast Paddling Trail through the gulf coast with island camping! The Tampa Bay area is very nice, i just prefer the less populated Nature Coast area from Crystal River north. Caledesi Island area is beautiful! Use your web browsers and search Cedar Key, Crystal River, Citrus County Chamber of Commerce, Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce etc. You will be impressed! The keys are exceptional and worthy of a visit by all, but always more crowded than I prefer and usually expensive and a days drive at least from the Nature Coast area. Of course all of Florida is generally beautiful when you are on a sailboat with a cool beverage! Why live in the cold?
Dale
Isn't Ceadar Key & Crystal River pretty skinny? For a group w/out local knowledge that could be a problem.
Admins,
As Ted mentioned, is there a way to setup a poll or a vote?
One for locations and one for dates?
Yes it is some of skinniest water in Florida, but easy to navigate for most people. On the west coast of Florida the gulf water is generally clearer the further south you travel. The northern area is nothing like the keys for saltwater diving and snorkeling. The freshwater coastal diving and snorkeling is fantastic, but more limited. Cedar Key or Crystal River would make a nice stop over point for anyone traveling further south as well. If you traveled from approximately Crystal River to Islamorada (in the Keys) it is a little over 400 miles. I am in any for any location the group decides as it is all great! I would encourage any visitors and I would be happy to show you the area. I always need work done on my boat as well! Signing off as the official Florida Nature Coast Welcome Center!
Dale
Lets rule out a few places until its narrowed down to just two or three then take a vote. That way your vote isn't "wasted" on a place that had no statistical possibility of winning.

I don't know much about the panhandle because I've rarely ever been there. East coast has limited appeal for this type of get together due to limited anchorages and camping.
My vote is
Anclote/Caladesei
Pennekamp
Charlote Harbor/Cayo Costa
In any order.
I prefer mid to late April as the water is warm enough to swim in but not too cold and the air is not too hot.
There is my vote.
Let's do a real survey. As asked above, admins, can we setup a survey? If not, I can create one on surveymonkey for us. I will wait unit I hear definitively from the admins.
I posted a poll for the place.
The poll will run for 30 days, that will allow everyone time to research the areas.
Once we have a destination, I'll post a poll for the week.
Carl
Cattail weighs in: Google "Sailing in the Florida Keys March 2010" for an article written by Howard and Kathy Staley. Their itinerary down the Keys in the ICW on the inside sounds like it might have possibilities for a fleet of Com-Pacs. I'm open to other venues and plan to participate if the Purser and I are available (we will not be available during April 2014).
Tom, CP17SC377, Cattail
Point of Information, please!
In the Location Poll, do we vote for one (1) or our "top three" (3), to narrow the field for a final vote as was intelligently suggested in a previous post?
Kindly advise one and all.
capt_nemo
Good point Capt Nemo.
We'll vote for our top three and then narrow it down from there with another poll.
Carl
On my iPhone I could only select one destination... Not my top 3.
Update after the fix: Eureka! Worked real smooth.
On my laptop, I could make only one selection, also.
Cattail
it appears we can only vote once. after all, this isn't chicago.
maybe what we can do is all vote, then on a given date, reset the poll so we can vote for our second choice and then again for our third.
unless the admins can change the way the poll operates?
carl
I bumped the vote count to three.
Click on "remove vote", then revote for three places.
Thanks!
Worked great, Carl
I submitted my three, but my write in vote is the upper gulf panhandle, Pensacola Bay or St Joe Bay. If the time turns out to be late April or early May, or anytime in October that area would be great with a 5/5 on no crowds. However, if the time turns out to be more winter, won't work much better than Siberia. ;) But I'll go for any group favored location if I don't have a conflict with the time.
How many days are we looking at for this get together?
I think this is something that would influence the location we pick.
The availability of stores and other items that may be needed.
The variety of activities to do.
Also is the thought to have a base camp or roam around an area.
Just a few things I was thinking

Here is an idea(so crazy it just might work)... It would be a logistical challenge to shuttle all the trailers, but we could have a moving floatilla that started one place and ended in another, say Pennekamp to Cayo Costo. That way the hardcore travelers could make the voyage over the week and the weekenders could pick one place or another to fit their schedule and/or fancy.
Now that I read that last paragraph, it sounds like someone saying "Why don't you just invent a car that runs on water? I'm the idea guy, find an engineer to make it work." Why don't any of you warn me before I say stupid things?
As far as stores (food, marinas, etc.) The only place that is even slightly inconvenient is Cedar Key, and all the basics are easy to get there. Pennekamp and lower keys are probably the most expensive, but not by so much that it will make or break a trip. DeSoto and Pennekamp are the places that have the most day-trip-away-from-basecamp locations to sail or drive to with lower keys being a very close third.
In other words, there isn't much that separates these locations, I don't think there is a real loser among them. I think it will be fun no matter where we choose, but I am kinda hoping for a place that allows bonfires and beach camping(does Yenisei Gulf allow beach camping?).
My original intention was to find an area with beach camping so those with smaller boats that don't care to sleep aboard would come. We would have a base camp to come back to each night and brag about how well we handled the almost hurricane like conditions ;) At the end of the week, we could have a potluck dinner on the beach with the left over stores.
The idea of launching from one area and retrieving from another would put a strain on most of us as we would need someone to shuttle us or our rigs to the next place. (think texas 200) ???
However, we could launch from one area, sail to another, then return. (think florida 120)
I personally like the idea of a base camp. This would allow us to sail, or spend a day just walking the beach, swimming or socializing. It would also be better if nasty weather sets in. We'll be familiar with the anchorage, and with a base camp, those arriving in the middle of the week will have no problem locating the group.
As for the length, I was looking at Monday through Friday. This would allow those of us up north traveling time.
Opinions?
Carl
Carl - Your comment about camp grounds near those who anchor out is important so we can keep everone close by. Ft Desoto would be good at this.
At the link below - a map of the park- the anchorage is close to the first tent above the words Mullet Key Bayou. There are water front campsites all along the area labeled St Christopher Key, however a 16 would have to anchor and dingy to shore. If you get campsite by the Entrance Station any boat can tie off to the sea wall with good depths. The bay above the Y in the word Key on Mullet Key Bayou is canoe water. The boat ramp is very large and modern with lots of parking. Depth would only be a problem during a full moon and a cold front at low tide. as you can see the anchorage is protected but... can get lumpy in a cold front or severe storm. See my video from last summer - mid July Small Boat Big Storm - the opening scenes are of the campground mentioned above http://youtu.be/iMIGAcTXpkQ
This park is huge but mostly wild-you need to drive to the fort. The best beaches are from the Fort to North Beach although the map is outdated. This is a real fort with big guns and stunning views. There is another one out on Egmont Key a few miles south in the Gulf - could do a sail out to it too.
As with ALL Florida parks this time of year you must make reservations months ahead. The earlist is 6 months and I would recommend that. It is unlikely we all would be next to one another in the camp but would have no issues rafting up.
Where ever the event ends up it has to be a place where all sizes of boats can be fairly close by. I don't know much about the keys but John Pennenkamp sounds good

Google satilite image of park and area- the area across from the boat ramps is canoe water but remote.
https://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wl
Cayo Costa would be fine for those anchoring out but the campsites are very far away on the west side of the island. You can camp on the beach but with no fires and it is primitive - ie no facilities at all. The dock at Cayo Costa is small and for campers and boaters renting cabins - really shacks, both too far from the anchorage. Don't get me wrong - we love Cayo Costa - we sailed HideAway down from Gulfport tied up to the dock as spent the week in a shack on the beach - It was wonderful
In our area Ft Desoto offers the best accommodations and places to sail to for a group as diverse as ours. If we were all anchoring out Three Rooker Bar would be my choice and if we were going to race, day sail, or tour Boca Ciega Bay- Gulfport would be good.
Can someone do an analysis of the other areas mentioned in the survey? Matt
Anclote key is primitive too, save for one composting outhouse. Shallow approaches and no docks. No fresh water. There is no reservations required.
Anclote River park (on the mainland) has plenty of parking and an excellent ramp. Tarpon springs is nearby (just up the river) and has groceries, restaurants (with docks), marinas and everything else.
Even though Anclote is a personal favorite of mine (and almost visible from my front door), I would agree that DeSoto would be a better campground for people to stay for a week. I don't know how many people are planning on staying in a campground vs anchoring though.
Pennekamp is smaller than DeSoto and has more daily traffic. There is similar levels of accomodations, showers etc. The ramp is a ways away from the campground, and there isn't good anchorage nearby because its narrow channels. The nearest place to anchor is the bay to the north east. This puts the campers and the anchorers at different places. The mangrove channels are busy with huge diving boats careening around sharp corners. You have a few miles to go to get out into the big blue water, and that isn't much fun dodging the traffic.
Pennekamp is the best place around if diving is your thing. Ft. DeSoto is probably the best place for sailing/camping/get-togethering
I'll leave Cedar key analysis to someone who's spent more time there.
Yes, I've always enjoyed the river trip from Anclote River Park to Tarpon Springs - you would be hard pressed to find a more interesting town. Our spring cruise this year was from Gulfport to Anclote Key. The waters north of the Dunedin Causeway are by far my favorite area to sail, but you really have to watch the weather and be ready to scoot. We wanted to anchor at Three Rooker but ended up hiding behind one of the spoil islands because of strong easterly winds.
I think the final choice will be dependant on whether this will be primarily gunkholing IE anchoring out, or a camping cruise. The number of boats coming will also play a large role. M
You can camp and have fires on Anclote Key Preserve. In fact there is an evasive Australian Pine Tree that the rangers encourage you to cut down and burn (think chainsaws and bonfires). There is no development on the island so it will be much like Cayo Costa but closer to other stuff.
The Tarpon Springs Sponge docks are only an hour or so sail away, with lots of restaurants and bars, and the boat ramp is even closer. It is located along the Anclote River so in the event of nasty weather, refuge is not far away.
3 Rooker, Honeymoon Island, Caladesi Island, and Clearwater beach are all with in a days reach.
Carl, since this was your idea maybe your vote should count twice.
FYI, I changed the poll to run for 110 days, and let folks change their vote based on further research and discussion. If any changes are needed, let me know.
I have to say this trip is VERY tempting, not that I'm committing to being there, but TEMPTING!!!
A homebase would be critical to keeping folks together and allowing folks to arrive/leave during their windows of opportunity.
And the campers won't have to keep setting up camp after a long day. Would there be a lot of campers??
Has any of this been finalized? Dates and location?
I've trailered from Indianapolis with both a CP16 and a CP23, and been both to Fort Desoto and to Cayo Costa.
It's kind of a long way in a CP 16 from any public ramp to Cayo Costa and the weather has never permitted me to do it, although I've done it in other boats. Ft Desoto, on the other hand has practically the worlds largest boat ramp (33 lanes of simultaneous trailer-backing mayhem!), and civilization (including WalMart) is within a few miles. Yet you're out in nature once you get to the park.
Plenty of places to anchor out, including the lagoon by the campground. Would be almost impossible to get a winter campsite, it's always full of snowbird RVs, but it's a great campground. I've anchored out and slept both in the CP16 and the 23, and been out to the fort on Egmont Key in both. You might need some guts to cross the ship channel in the CP16 depending on the traffic, but I've done it and it's fun to look up at a 10 story cruise ship and wave to the passengers. You could also stay on Shell Key Preserve, a primitive "leave no trace" island which would be a good home base. I don't know if they'd let you use it for this, but they also have a youth group camp area (tents)with 90 person capacity at Fort DeSoto. Somebody bring a couple of kids for the CPYOA youth group camp, and we can have 88 adult chaperones!
If the group has campers and stay aboards and want to go to Ft Desoto best way is to have those who want to camp stay at the regular campsites near the boat ramp. There is plenty of room for those who want to stay on their boats in Mullet Key Bayou and it keeps the group close together. You can camp on Shell Island with a free permit but only on the southern tip, which is in Bunce's Pass a very short distance to the Gulf. There is no anchorage here- you must anchor in the channel - if you drag during an out going tide its bye bye boat. The larger boats or those who want to stay aboard have to anchor in Mullet Key Bayou - a long distance from Shell Island. Our favorite gunkhole, about mid way up Shell Key was destroyed in the hurricanes of 04 & 06- the gunkhole is still there but has no access. I don't know of a youth camp - there used to be a Boy Scout camp just off the bridge but the water is far too shallow. As far as reservations go you really need to make them early - 6 months is advised. The best time to go is mid April to mid May. If you go too early you may catch a cold front and while it doesn't get THAT cold the wind is strong enough to make sailing an endurance test and you may not have access to to where you want to go. Too late and the bugs will drive you sane. By Memorial Day it's just too hot. Most of the snow birds leave after Easter.
I have to tell you that Bunce's Pass can be a bear if you get the wind and tide wrong. We once had 5 foot waves pound the patooies out of us in our Sea Pearl one scary day and in another incident my son and I had to be rescued when the wind died on an out going tide at sunset and we couldn't paddle the Laser hard enough to over come it
Cayo Costa has a similar problem. The camp sites are on the west side of the island - the rangers haul you there on a trailer pulled by a pickup. The anchorage in Pelican Bay is a long ways. And while you can leave your boat at the dock it is first come first served on a daily basis. You can camp on the beach near Pelican Bay but there are no facilities of any kind and recently I'm told no fires are allowed. Its a great area though and we'd like to go back.
Here's a thought - since everybody is trailering why not spend a couple of nights on Three Rooker with day trips to Anclote Key, Honeymoon and Caladesi then trailer down to Ft Desoto. You could stop at the Com-Pac plant on the way. The group could do the same thing ending up at Cayo Costa
I think the destination will depend mostly on the mix of attendees. If there are a lot of campers places like Ft Desoto or John Pennekamp would be best to keep the group together with Cayo Costa a distant third- did you see Billy's post? Now that looks like fun! There is no good snorkeling here by the way. Matt
While the snorkeling was great at Pennekamp, there are really no Islands to go to from Pennekamp, just open Ocean.
I like Matt's idea of a multi destination trip.
Start or finish at 3 Rooker/Anclote and then Ft. Desoto, and possibly Cayo Costa. We do have trailers. Why limit ourselves?
What is our time frame for this. I know of a ramp in punta Gorda I can launch and retrieve at, but dont know of any others that are on the coast. I need 5ft of water at the end of the ramp for launching. Ideas for truck and trailer storage as well? A cruise of sorts could be fun. If I go and the weather is good a run to the tortugas might be in order!
Oh man, this sounds soooo good if it weren't for that blasted 4 letter word: w-o-r-k!
Bob23
Cmon bob Im sure you have some vacation time to burn! Bring Koinonia to see her big sis.
Bob,
Ask the boss for some time off. ;D
I don't work so I'll have to think of some other excuse. Hang in there -- I'll come up with something and get back to you.
Curtis
Bob dont you have family in Punta Gorda, see you could have fun, see family, ect
If anyone is interested, there are several good deep ramps in the Anna Maria Island/Longboat Key/Sarasota/Seista Key area. The Century Park/10th st. ramp in Sarasota and Blind Pass ramp in Seista Key are two of my favorites. The Blind Pass ramp is right next to the Turtle Beach RV park for RV campers.
Big Koin:
Yeah....our daughter is leaving NJ tomorrow night for Punta Gorda. It would make a good excuse...
Bob23
Hey Carl and Com-Pac Crew,
I think I would be interested in dragging my CP-16 down to FL for a week. I will be following this thread with interest and maybe a few questions along the way. I already notified work of a possible sailing trip and short of family emergency matters, I am in.
Early spring is good timing for me, but any time could work with a good advance notice. Any location suitable for sailing a CP-16 works for me. Or, I could fill in for crew.
My only other Florida sailing experiences was at the Snook Inn, down on Marco Island, a long time ago.
Are there any other 16's that might make this trip?
Rich
Rich,
this is good news, i think this will be well worth the drive.
our plan right now is to sail this get-together, then trailer down to key largo and spend a few days sailing the bay side.
i think joanie is as hyped about it as i am!
carl
Ahoy, Mates. We need to keep this thread active so it will get noticed. The polls will close in less than two months. Get out the vote!
Cattail Tom
I voted - but agree - time to VOTE.
Really, any of these sites is fine with me. The timing will be the issue as I schedule work travel months ahead.
- Ted
Any chance of closing the poles a month or so early? Nov. 20th Is really a long way away. By the time we finalize dates it may be too late for some.
Would be nice to have the time and place finalized by the end of the year.
I agree with Billy.
At work, we start picking vacations in December.
Shall we end the poll October 15th?
Then pick for the week of the event by October 31st?
Carl
I can set the poll to expire whenever you need it to. Mid Oct seems reasonable. Let me know for sure when.
Cattail is on board with closing the polls October 15.
Poll has been set to end Oct. 15. That's 22 days from now. Get your three top votes in.
I am looking forward to the 'Flight of the Com Pacs' Most definitely count me in! IF, for whatever reason, you guys go to Siberia, I'll brush up on my Russian. should startle the ruskies up a lil bit.
It's down to the wire Compac-o-nauts!
You have about a day and a half to get your votes in before the poll closes! :o
Do your research, make your choice, and then we'll have one week to vote from the top three.
Also, start thinking about when this will take place, late April, or early May?
Carl
The inaugural Florida Get Together will be May 5-9, 2014 at Anclote/Caledesi.
The closest ramp (google earth) looks to be at Anclote River Park. 1119 Baillies Bluff Rd, Holiday, FL 34691
I don't know if they allow overnight parking, I'll look into it.
I'm thinking we could all meet up at the south end of Anclote Key.
With VHF radios tuned to channel 69, we can locate one another.
I'll fly a large flag with the Compac logo on it. It will be a, yet to be determined, bright color.
Once together, we can sail to a "permanent" camp.
Local knowledge of where we can set up a base camp would be most appreciated as I would like to announce it here before the event, so late arrivals can find us.
Carl
I just booked the time off. ;D
Yes, you can park overnight there.
As to the S. End of Anclote....this is one of my favorite places to go.
On the S.E. Corner on the ICW side the bank is fairly steep and you can anchor right off the beach.
On the south side there are some shoals a few 100 yards that are not on the charts out so be careful. The charts are out dated.
Then on the west side is pretty good beach w/good depth and a steep bank (like the east side) but it is unprotected. If the wind is out of the east than this isn't a bad option.
Also love 3 Rooker just a bit further south. (maybe 30 minutes). I like this place as well. Right in the middle of the island is a cut where a small creek runs b/w splitting the island into two parts (north and south). Excellent swimming here, anchoring, fishing and beach. You can easily walk from one side to the other. Just a few hundred feet.
Both places are primative, no water, docks, nothing. But they do allow camp fires. So we would need to anchor out and swim/wade to shore....or dingy.
Are we talking camping, or sleeping on our boats?
If we are going to have a base camp for four days I might suggest Caladesi island. There is water, docks, power, all that stuff. And we could all have a day sail up to the islands listed above. There is a closer boat ramp to Caladese on Seminole St. in Clearwater.you can park over night here too. Not sure if Caladesi allows camping (and camp fires) but they do have docks and you can sleep on your boat.
Maybe we could spend a few nights at the Caladesi marina and then one night on the hook at 3 Rooker or Anclote. And then back for the last few nights at Caladesi. I would hesitate to call out a place to spend on the hook so far in advance. Some places can be very protected some days and exposed on others depending on the weather.
And there is one more public ramp at Sutherland Bayou on Alt. 19 in Palm Harbor. This ramp is the closest to these islands but it is shallow and tricky getting out. I would be willing to lead a convoy out of here and back in if we can agree on a time.
Personally, i like Anclote and 3 Rooker better than Caladesi. No tourist, and unspoiled......the REAL Florida. But I think with a large group, Caladesi would be a better base for what we are trying to do. And of coarse there are many spoil islands we can anchor at too. They are small and we can always duck around onto the lee side and raft up several boats together.
This is my backyard so if there is anything I can do let me know.
I am really looking forward to this!
Caladesi Island sp does not allow camping on land. You can stay on your boat. The marina is well kept - with electrical hookups and floating docks. As we found out there are no showers. Bring your hiking shoes - you will want to walk the trail. No see ums can be a problem so a back up anchorage is necessary. The only effective defence against the no see ums is a good fan. Anclote Key does allow camping but it's on the northwest side of the large island.
Here's the Caladesi web page http://www.floridastateparks.org/caladesiisland/
Anclote Key web page http://www.floridastateparks.org/anclotekey/default.cfm
There is a series of 5 videos about this area from our cruise last May- http://www.youtube.com/user/SVHideAway
The base anchorage will have to be determined by the weather, with importance given to wind strength and direction. Ideally it would be Three Rooker Bar as described above. A back up anchorage not shown on my videos would be directly across the ICW from the Dunedin Marina between the two spoil islands.
Also keep in mind we will not be all that far, by trailer, to Ft Desoto park at the mouth of Tampa Bay. It would be a hard days sail by boat. Tarpon Springs is roughly a half hour drive from the Com-pac plant.
Our plan now is to get the trailer road worthy and launch at Tarpon Springs.

It is a bit of a haul from Anclote River Boat ramp to Caladesi. Probably take around four hours. And you have to go under the Honeymoon Island drawbridge or around the outside and in through hurricane pass which is VERY tricky. Shallow and strong currents. Plus the A.N.To.Ns are not accurate. I have seen green Chanel markers up to 100' on the beach at low tide. I would not recommend going in or out of here at night or low tide. It is best to follow someone with a larger draft.
And don't forget Clearwater Beach is right there too if you want to stay in a hotel.
Matt, you beat me to posting the links!
There are roughly 20 spoil islands between Seminole ramp and Anclote ramp.
In two weeks is the St. Pete boat show. I'll ask Gerry or Rich about setting up a tour of the factory on one of those dates.
Maybe even one of them will join us with a pilot house!!! Wouldn't that be cool!
a trip to the compac factory would be cool. i plan on stopping there anyway to pick up a few items.
who, besides us, are planning to sleep on their boats?
how many are bringing smaller compacs and want to tent camp?
this will influence where we set up a base camp, unless the tent campers don't mind moving.
also, we want the late arrivals to be able to find us!
carl
I'll be bringing my 19, and plan to sleep on the boat. I haven't finalized it yet yet, but I plan to "stage" my trip by bringing the 19 to St. Augustine in early spring, then trailer it over to the west coast for this event, then back to St. Augustine. My Florida based Son-in-Law, Pete, may well join me for the event.
Can't Wait.
TG
There is a group called the "West Coast Trailer Sailor Squadron" that has monthly adventures with their trailer sailors. The founder Ron Hoddinutt at hoddinr@mac.com would be the one to contact if you choose to invite them.
that would be way cool to have a pilot house to play with!!!
Fellow Participants,
It would certainly be nice to set aside some time to CONVENIENTLY meet one another, check out other boats in person, and discuss boats and equipment with others.
The most enjoyable gatherings of kindred spirits in my sailing life have included such an opportunity which was greatly appreciated by those in attendance.
Therefore, I suggest we seriously consider kicking off the gathering AT THE DOCKS on Caledesi Island . We could not only CONVENIENTLY accomplish the aforementioned tasks, but also benefit from the LOCAL KNOWLEDGE present and collectively decide on the remaining itinerary with more accurate knowledge of the short term weather forecast.
capt_nemo
I like Nemo's idea of a meet and greet.
Is there overnight parking at Caledesi Island? Stowing the tow vehicle will be an issue for most of us.
I agree that the Caladesi Island SP Marina would be a good rendezvous point. Tow vehicles and trailers would have to be left at one of the various launch sites identified above as Caladesi is accessible only by water.

Ted,
If you had another driver, it is possible that you could leave your truck and trailer on the Honeymoon Island Causeway. That is only about 5 minutes from Caladesi. But there is no dock and you are basically leaving your rig on the side of the road.
Doable but probably not a good idea.
Looking forward to you and your little ships coming to Florida! My regular sailing grounds are St Joseph Sound and Caladesi and Honeymoon Islands. I sail in and out Hurricane Pass without any incidents. Just stay close to the markers and keep your depth sounders on.
Sea ya!
BobL
I too like the "capt's" suggestion
cc
Has there been a decision made?
Yes!
The event will take place May 5th thru the 9th at Anclote/Caledesi.
maybe by then I will have picked up a little compac to show up with. Id suspect big Koinonia would be sold by then. Looks to be a great cruising ground for the 19s and 23s!
Hello all! This is my first post on this forum that I have been reading for two years straight. This trip sounds epic and I hope to make it...that is unless you experts out there tell me to stay home and get more experience!! My question is exactly that...one of experience. I just bought my Compac 19 this year and sailed her all summer. Prior to this I learned to sail singlehanded on a little Victoria 18 about 5 years ago. I want to make this trip but want to ensure it's something that is recommended for a first time ocean experience. I am no stranger to adventure...I have thru hiked the Appachian Trail and spent many days on small craft on lakes, rivers, and bays. I come prepared for that part and is why...exactly why...I feel as though I have always been drawn to sailing. I now have 2 kids, 7 and 5 and a wife that have learned to tune me out when I am talking about sailing, polishing and waxing techniques, and sail handling. It's all I seem to think about these days.
I read all I can about navigation and details about some of the route you highlighted this journey will be taking. I see charts with depths to shallow for comfort and I just want your feedback if this journey that would include a commute from Fort Worth Texas, would be the right move for me at this point. I suppose I love the idea because I dream of seeing my beautiful boat slip into saltwater for the first time. I love the idea of other boats being there that are family to mine. I especially love the idea of others being around to say Scott didn't make camp tonight, let's call the Coast Guard for him! I am realistic enough to understand the preliminary steps I need to take as well and not walk into this trip blind. I understand it's a trip to come prepared for.
It seems that owners here are welcoming with open arms and just want to see your thoughts on a lake sailor becoming an ocean sailor on this inaugural trip.
Scott
Scott,
One thing you need to know about Florida sailing.....if you get into trouble, just get out and walk!
I am kindding, kinda. I think the biggest challange will be trailering from Ft. Worth to FL. Once you get here you should be fine. These boats were made to be sailed right here on the west coast of Florida.
Billy
PS. I spoke with Rich Hutchens at the St. Pete boat show and he said that he would be glad to host a tour of the factory. He just asked that we give him a heads up. So, I should ask, what day would be the best for the tour?
Should we set up another poll?
Just posted in the other thread...
Factory Tour? Rich gave the A-OK. He just asked that we give him a heads up on the date. I think a month should be more than enough notice.
Any ideas for a specific date?
Scott,
Don't worry about the shallow water, you'll be fine. I've never heard an old salt lament about how he sailed too much, or that he took his kids on too many vacations. There will be plenty of other ComPacs out, and if they can do it, you can follow.
Bert
Billy and Bert...
Thank you so much for the quick reply. I am glad to hear you say I am not thinking to big here...I am in. That's all I needed. Actually May 5th is my birthday as well and simply seems fitting. I need an adventure and not worried about the drive down...that will simply be part of the journey.
Love the idea of the tour and very glad it seems like it might be possible to make this happen. Thanks Billy.
Ok...now to prepare the boat AND trailer.
Re: Factory Tour
Our Com Pac 2014 Florida Rendezvous is currently scheduled for Monday through Friday, May 5 - 9, 2014.
Folks attending from NEAR and FAR will be quite busy launching and arriving at our first Rendezvous Point, which I'm assuming will be Caledesi Island State Park Marina, ideally suited for conveniently getting acquainted, exchanging ideas, and discussing Com Pac Sailboats. This will take all day Monday. Hopefully a communal Pot Luck can be planned for the evening meal. With the benefit of LOCAL KNOWLEDGE and SHORT RANGE WEATHER FORCAST, plans for the remaining cruising itinerary should be discussed and agreed upon.
With boats prepped for multiple days of cruising, it would be prudent to get the most out of our limited time together by staying together as long as possible and not interrupt the itinerary midstream for a Factory Tour. Besides, it would be quite inconvenient for those who might have to trailer their boats temporarily only to launch again after the Tour to rejoin the Group. A lot of LOST "together time".
A Factory Tour scheduled for the LAST weekday, FRIDAY, May 9, 2014, (preferably early afternoon) seems to make the most sense in that it would have the advantage of allowing participants to stay together cruising for most of the week. Those interested in the Factory Tour could leave the Group and trailer their boats a little earlier in preparation for the trip back home.
(Thoughts from a Retired Army planner!)
capt_nemo
I like that, perhaps we could ask Rich or Gerry for a "bad weather rain advance". Only in the event that if we do get some bad weather, we could pull the boats mid week and take the tour. Otherwise schedule it for the last day.
Maybe for all the T. S. newbies a new thread," Countdown to the Flight" is in order. Kind of a checklist thread. Like "It's Dec. This is what you should be doing now to get ready to Fly".
TG
capt nemo,
i was thinking friday also, for the same reasons.
i also have made the mistake of starting 2 seperate threads for this topic.
perhaps a moderator can join the 2?

I love the idea of a countdown!! If someone starts one this year then I will volunteer for next years when I have a clue what I am doing!! ;D

But I can lock one of the posts so people can't post in that one anymore.

I just noticed that the West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron is having their annual Cedar Key Small Boat Event on May 2-4th. Somebody already mentioned this group earlier in this thread, but wanted to add some information about this small sailboat event. If anybody is planning to be in the area earlier than our event the following week this would be a great event to attend. The event always has a lot of very nice small sailboats. Most of the entire weekend is unplanned and fun! The location is Cedar Key Florida which is on the West Coast of Florida about 115 miles north of the Tarpon Springs area of our planned launch site for our Florida get together. Check it out at the sailing squadron web site http://members.ij.net/wctss/wctss/dates.htm or the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce at http://www.cedarkey.org/lodging.php . The Small Boat Event information can be found on their events page. Cedar Key is really cool small island community with a lot of local history. Lots of nice art and crafts, restaurants in a rural Florida small town. It would be a great stop over point for those traveling long distances. There are very few motels so book early if you are interested. Check out the Island Hotel or Harbour Master Suites as these are both great! I live really close and will provide any assistance I can. It is a great place if you like water and sunshine!
I am not trying to hijack the thread or our get together, this is just a real nice event which some might enjoy! Hope you can make it!
Dale
carl, on your way down or back maybe you and joanie would like to spend a night here. give me a yell. the ulterior motive is (i can try and step the mast and see if it fits in the garage)----also sarah loves you guys

Ya'll ready? Who's bringing the floating Sunset bar and umbrella drinks? :)
Ill be Sailing up from Bradenton Fl. West Coast (Slipaway ) Has Been they before
wow!
this is getting close and there is so much to do on the boat.
i hope the weather breaks soon so i can get working on our 19!
for those who are planning to attend, here is where i plan to launch from.
http://www.pascocountyfl.net/index.aspx?NID=674 (http://www.pascocountyfl.net/index.aspx?NID=674)
they allow overnight parking up to 10 days and it looks like they charge $2 a day and $5 to launch.
(if some one who knows this area and has a better launch site, please let us know)
the idea is to meet at caledesi key's marina on monday and then sail to anclote key or ? to set up base camp.
this is for anclote key...
Admission Fee:
No entrance fee is required to enter this park.
Primitive Camping Fee:
Primitive camping is free but you must call 727-638-4447 to check in. Please have your boat registration number, number of campers, arrival and departure dates and a contact phone number in case of emergency.
would it be better to meet at anclote key so as to ensure we get a good spot for a base camp?
just thinking...cc
Repeating what I said before, which I thought was generally agreed to by several others.
Meeting at Caledesi State Park Marina on Monday, May 5th the first day, would provide a specific destination for those attending from both NEAR and FAR. It is an IDEAL PLACE to meet and greet, conveniently observe and talk about our boats (at dockside), get together for a social evening, and discuss/determine the schedule for the rest of the week with the advantage of Local Knowledge present (those from NEAR) and the short range weather forecast.
This certainly keeps it CLEAR and SIMPLE for attendees, and especially those who are not familiar with the area.
The need for and specific location of a "Base Camp" area for the week is to be determined.
capt_nemo
Sun Cat "Frisky"
If you're planning on attending please pm me your cell #, and I'll do the same. Ideally we will all meet at Caledesi marina, however some may run late due to schedules or vehicle break downs. Others may be planning on arriving mid-week. I'll be monitoring channel 69 on the VHF for those so equipt, and for those without that are running, late please call my cell. Since the idea is to us all leave from the marina for the base camp at the same time, and we may not have a base picked until that afternoon, i wouldn't want anyone left behind.
We are planning arriving very early Monday, sailing to Caledesi marina and greating everyone as they arrive.
CC
I am not sure I will be able to go on Monday. I teach Monday evening. But I could go out Sunday and then come back out on Tuesday. And on-off during the week.
I think it is good that we have an established channel to monitor so that way we can all contact each other whether arriving early or late. So 69 is the official Florida Get Together channel.
I also think that Caladesi should be the "base camp" as that is the only guaranteed protected area. There are some good places here and there but they al depend on the weather.
As for Anclote Park boat ramp.......
I think it is an excellent deep water ramp and I launch from there most of the time. However, there are a few things to be aware of.
1. The current. When the tide is coming in there is a VERY strong current that runs S. to N. Be aware of this. I like to launch on the down stream side of a figer dock (the dock is to the Starboard side of the boat). This pushes the boat off the dock as opposed to on to it. Just make sure you have good strong dock lines.
2. There is a long channel out to deep water. At least a mile and a half before you can get out of the channel. This channel can have lots of big boat traffic that rocks our little Com-Pacs. Another reason I like to dock down steam of the docks at the ramp. The current pushes you away from the docks while the big boat wakes can crash your boat into the dock.
3. You can sail out of the channel if the wind is out of the North, East, or South. Not the West. But again, watch out for the high speed powerboat traffic.
4. With Favorable winds (nothing out of the South ) it will take you a MINIMUM of 3 hours maybe even 5 to get to Caladesi. And you will also have to either go under the Honeymoon Island Drawbridge or go around the outside in the Gulf (add another 2 hours).
5. Park you trailer off to the side and walk down to the ramps (there are about 6 of them) and just observe. You will be entertained and informed.
I would suggest either using the Sutherland Bayou boat ramp(shallower ramp and long channel but almost no traffic and much closer to Caladesi. Still need to go under the draw bridge though. OR the Seminole Boat ramp to the south in Clearwater. This is a good ramp too, no channel, you can just about sail right off the dock. And closer to Caladesi.
I am not sure, but I think that the Dunedin Marina is for locals only. Maybe Bob Lamb or some of the other local yokels can chime in.
And lastly we need to solidify the Factory tour. I know Nemo mentioned the last day (or Friday) but I can't remember. We need to give the Hutchins some notice. I will contact me if you guys can give me a time and a date.
Billy
billy,
good heads up on the boat ramp and current.
being a lake sailor, i never have to deal with them, and i'd rather not gain too much experience in a heavy traffic area.
the other ramps sound much more viable, can we leave our vehicles there all week?
it's my understanding that there is no camping at caladesi, that is why i mentioned we meet there and sail to another place for those wishing to sleep ashore.
if the majority is ok with relocating each night, then that's what we can do.
as for the factory tour, i talked to rich a the strictly sail chicago show last february and he said friday afternoon would be good.
he also mentioned with a smile..."it won't take long, it's a very small factory", and that they are building an eclipse with a diesel in it and he hoped it would still be in the shop when we arrive.
perhaps after the tour, we can all go out for a farewell dinner?
cc
Yes, you can overnight at both Sutherland and Seminole. As with anything boats there is always a compromise. Sutherland is in a better neighborhood for leaving a vehicle overninght than Seminole. But Seminole is a better ramp (6 lanes vs 1) and quicker access to deep sailing water.
Almost every time I have launched from Seminole I have seen a police officer sitting in his patrol car. Not sure how long they stay, but I can say that the area is well patrolled during the day.
And I guess I didn't think that anyone would not be staying on their boats. There are lots of small spoil islands w/ good holding where you can anchor on the lee side all around. And of coarse, my favorites, 3 Rooker and Anclote Key to the North. If the wind is out of the east, anchoring on the west side of Anclote is a must!

Spoke to the Duneden Marina harbormaster( Bill) who said $15 to launch and free parking for a few days for vehicles and trailers. I will be glad to lend any assistance on Monday, but I am busy Tues/Wed. It is about a 20 minute sail to Caladesi depending on tides and draft.
Sea Ya!
i thought someone mentioned here that there was no overnighting at caladesi.
my mistake. my BIG mistake.
there is NO tent camping.
it would definitely be easier to meet and stay, at least the 1st night, at caladesi state park.
i just checked and slips can be reserved ahead of time, so i went ahead and reserved a slip for monday, may 5th.
we'll be at slip #22
22, 24, and 26 are next to one another.
THERE ARE ONLY 4 OTHER SLIPS AVAILABLE FOR RESERVATIONS, however, there are slips available on a 1st come - 1st serve basis.
here is the info for everyone else...

Now that sounds a hell of a lot better!
capt. nemo
I just grabbed slip 24. Sailcare has my sails and they have run into materials ordering delays. I hope they arrive soon!! Gotta get this boat checked out and ready to go.
- Ted
FYI
Talked to the Ranger at Caladesi Is. today.
Although ONLY 6 Boat Slips can be RESERVED there are plenty of others available on a "first come first served" basis.
Today, with more than 100 slips available there were only 3 (that's three) boats there.
Those attending should not worry about RESERVATIONS.

Called the Compac factory today.

She laughed and commented "There isn't much here to see"!
CC
Actually, when I was there last week, they are just finishing up a new CP27, with every option known to man. A bow thruster on a 27? Dark blue hull, she's a beauty!
They are funny at the factory; it's pretty cool if you haven't seen it before. Between ordering and getting SunCat #21, we were on vacation in Florida, and I set up a time to visit. It was really cool to see the various steps the boats were going through.
Oops, edited to correct hull number.

Any 16 owners planing on joining for a day or 2?
getting for our get together, i've been going bananas looking for the nauticpath chip for my gps.
i looked through every box, bin, and bag of misc. sailing paraphernalia i have at least 3 times with no luck.
i was beginning to think we would have to call ahead to a marine store and pay another small fortune for a new one.
i went into the basement one last time, looked into a box with only 2 items in it, and wouldn't you know it? there it was, RIGHT WHERE I LEFT IT!
sometimes if you look too hard, you look past what your searching for.
i also found my bright yellow, 6' tall halogen work lights i looked so hard for last month. (they were in a corner with my 20 or so fishing rods)

I'll be there once or twice. I live locally and have a C16
Tides: According to the Windfinder app on my i phone, low tide at Caladesi Island SP will be at 10:35 am next Monday, May 5. Can anyone confirm that information?
Cattail
the boat and jeep are packed, attached, and ready to roll.
going to bed for a long nap and plan on leaving at midnight tonight.
it's been a cold rainy week and our furnace quit 3 days ago.
florida is looking real good right now.
the gps indicates we're 995 miles from dunedin.
see you all monday at caladesi!
CC
Be careful driving! We are expecting rain down here Sat and clearing Sunday. Should have good weather rest of week. Presently in the 90's. Look forward to seeing you! André & Helen
reedtg3,
LOW TIDE at Dunedin/Caladesi Is. on Monday, May 5, 2014, is indeed at 10:35 AM.
HOWEVER, note that the water level for this "Low" Tide is 1.2 ft ABOVE the "0.0" datum line AND that the tide rises from then to 2.3 ft above datum at 4:14 PM!
Hope this helps.
capt. nemo
Hi All, Been trying to get my 16 ready for next week, almost done with the little things. Unfortunately the trailer needs a new bunk board and not sure i can get it done with all the rain this weekend. Any chance I can hitch a ride with someone? I have friends I can stay with in Dunedin. Really would love to meet up with other CP owners! Thanks for your thoughts on this.
Pam
Cattail here on this rainy Saturday with little to do but stir the pot. Aye. To encourage Andre and Helen to come up with a name for their Com-Pac 27, I propose that, if necessary, we help them out with a little naming contest of our own next week followed by a dockside naming ceremony. Put your thinkin' hats on.
Good idea!
I'll be there IN PERSON, with my suggestion and to cast my vote.
Now I gotta get back to load'in my boat, between raindrops, for an early AM departure for the 2014 Florida R-E-N-D-E-Z-V-O-U-S!
Forecast for next week is absolutely gorgeous Florida weather.
capt. nemo
Well we made it to Ashburn, GA where we will be spending the night.
Lost power in the 5th cylinder of the Jeep going through the mountains.
Luckly it was a $36 fix.
Because I didn't have time to wash the Jeep before departing, the weather has been most cooperative!
Sunny and high 70's :-)
We'll be in Dunedin tomorrow with most of the day to shop for last minute supplies.
CC
Looking over the posts again, it seems the Seminole boat ramp is our choice.
Any advise is welcome!
Cc
Performed an on-site recon a couple of weeks ago and looked at a few ramp possibilities.
Decided that I will be using the Seminole Boat Ramps as well.
See ya'.
capt. nemo
We made it to the seminole ramps.
They look good.
If you use them, pay for parking at the bait shop. The self-pay is only for 72 hours or less.
Drove to the dunedin marina where we had reserved a room across the street at the best western yacht harbor inn.
Our room looks out over the marina where i can see a green compac 23/I, and a compac 25 or 27 with a yellow bimini and dodger.
I believe the name is "sundog".
Nice hotel, but no boats or trailers allowed, so i had to pay an additional $15 to park near the ramp. :(
I am going to post this in 2 locations,
05/05/14
Carl has told me to post that they are at 3 Rooker Island and will be sailing to Anclote tomorrow
Mac
hey carl did rich go down with you guys?
Yes he did. Arrived at the park on Sunday. We all left for three rooker island on Mon 3 Suncats, 2 CP19's and our 27. We went back to our Marina on Mon, but plan to shoot out there today . Not too much wind yesterday, but nice and sunny!
André
Monday we motored from the Seminole boat ramps to Caladesi island.
Monday night the little no-see-umms did their best to drive us crazy.
Tuesday started off very slow as the wind didn't show up until late morning.
But when it did, the sailing was great. All the way to 3 Rooker island where we walked the beautiful beach and admired each other's boats while standing in the clear, cool, waist deep waters.
The wind switched around about midnight leaving us anchored to a lee shore, and bobbing like corks all night while waiting for anchor alarms to sound.
Wednesday morning Frisky, About Time, and Cattail left our anchorage with cat like reflexes and before we new it, they were specks on the horizon.
Heading back ourselves, we motored into the wind all the way back to the Dunedin causeway where I tried to raise the group on the
VHF. Believing they all were heading home (tonight was predicted to be as bad) we motored on to the Seminole ramps were we met up with Nemo as he ready his boat for the road.
Nemo believed the group went back to Caladesi, but Joanie, who wasn't feeling good from the start asked if we could just leave.
I could see she was not doing well with all the no-see-um bites, 2 nights of restless sleep, and too much sun.
So, we decided not to go back to Caladesi and instead get Joanie into an air-conditioned hotel room.
After re-organizing the boat and jeep, Ted pulled his 19 out and was readying it as we said good-bye.
I wish we could have stayed and made the trip to the Compac factory, but I want my wife to enjoy sailing, and with her not feeling well, it was best to bow out.
I want to thank everyone for coming and it was a real pleasure meeting each of you.

Got "Frisky" the Sun Cat home safely from the 2014 Florida Get Together. Managed to get unprotected legs and bare feet sunburnt and have recovered from a very rough nite anchored off a lee shore at Three Rooker Is.
Since this was to be the longest road trip I've taken, decided to make sure all was secured as shown by this photo. Nothing came loose on trip up or back.

Great photo-coverage of an epic Compac event! Thanks. I note the CPYOA burgee being proudly flown on a number of boats. Isn't that 23 in fact a 25 or 27?
Looks like everyone had a great time...wonderful weather, too. Thanks once again for making us Northerners a bit jealous. I've saved up some snow from our winter and am trucking it down to your house!
Bob23
Burgees.......................Sweet !
Bob23,
You are quite perceptive and absolutely right - it is a 27, my mistake. Belongs to Andre and Helen, "Awfeith"and is still nameless.
However, after listening to opra music coming from that boat at the dock for two days I would suggest "Andiamo" as a suitable Italian name.
capt_nemo
Thanks, Capt.
I didn't remember a 23 with an inboard rudder although I've toyed with the idea. I always wondered if it would help in the never ending quest to eliminate the weather helm which seems to be inherent in our 23's. But I'm not ready to install a rudder post into the aft deck.
I'll take Italian opera over rap anytime!
Ciao compagno!
Andiamo is the name of my 19II it was converted from the English "Let's Go" four years ago.
TG
Cattail here, weighing in with name suggestions for Andre and Helen's CP 27: "Song of the Orca" translated into Italian, which I think would be "Canto/Canzone/Romanza (pick one) della Orca." However, when it comes to naming things, I learned long ago (when our first grandchild was born) just how little influence I had.
Els and I had a great time on the cruise and would like to thank Carl for putting it together. As it turned out, Els and I and Jack had the Caladesi Island SP Marina all to ourselves Wednesday night. We tied up more in the center of the marina, away from the seawall, and had more wind and fewer no see 'ems than on Monday night. The ride back to the Seminole Street ramp was into the wind so we motored. LESSON LEARNED: I ran out of gas in the remote tank on the way back (didn't anticipate how much motoring we would do and only started with 1.5 gallons in the remote tank), but, fortunately, had an extra 500 ml in a fuel bottle which I was able to add to the integral tank as we bounced around outside the channel. To my relief, after I switched the fuel tank lever, the engine fired up on the 4th pull and we made it in with a little bit of fuel to spare. Next time, I will listen to the voice of reason (Els) and start the cruise with the remote tank full, the integral tank full, and an extra 500 ml in the fuel bottle.

I m sorry we could not attend - I thought of you all every day last week - you sure had some great weather and the Gulf is only 80 degrees so the nights must have been wonderful. Over the last months our lives would have made a good country song- but things are looking better and we hope to be back sailing soon. Any plans for next year? Matt

I'd like to thank those who participated and again apologize for our early and abrupt departure.
My wife's health issues flared up and the heat and lack of sleep made it impossible for her to continue.
I thought it best to abort our trip and plans to head to the Keys.
I'd like to see this continue and grow, perhaps earlier in the year when it isn't so hot?
CC
Sorry to hear you had to cut the trip short. Hope Joanie is feeling better. Earlier in the year, perhaps spring break, the weather is cooler, and so is the gulf. For sure more wind! The northerlies usually last 3 to 4 days. Let us know your plans for the Keys? Perhaps we can hook up for a couple of days. Stay in touch, your are always welcome here!

I will get some pics up later this week. All I can say is thanks! Now that I have been over in that area I plan on returning.
Carl - you are a good sailor!
Captain Nemo - that was quite a night we spent closely anchored! I looked over at you often and it seemed like we were getting closer. I don't think we were, though.
Anywho - I will post some pics when I get a bit more time.

crazycarl,
Glad you made it home safely and hope Joanie is doing well.
It was a pleasure meeting and sailing with you and the other folks.
Thanks for getting the 2014 Florida Rendezvous organized.

Ted, any chance you could take some pictures of your 19s mods for us to gander at? I think I am seeing what Carl was telling me about, a traveller in front of the cabin?
He told me of some other things as well.... anyway if in the 19 section if you could post some pics and such that would be greatly appreciated :D
Mac
Will do. My boat is in a storage place right now since the boat ramp on the lake I am in most of the time is being re-poured. So, I won't be getting back to her for a few days.
Funny request to me: my boat was the least impressive at the meetup! Now I am inspired, though.
I was there in spirit, somewhat. I got the family all loaded up into the boat and launched from the Dunedin ramp only to have the motor give out 100 yards later. We sailed out of the harbor and spent the afternoon slicing back and forth across St. Joseph Sound, but we thought it was a bit irresponsible to head down the channel without a way to get back out. Sailing back into the harbor was a bit scary but such a small (and slow) boat was able to do just fine. I felt a bit bad for handing my pregnant wife a paddle, but hey, a guy's got to get to the dock somehow right? I learned that testing a brand new motor at home, and again at the ramp, and again once you put it in the water, doesn't ensure you will have a motor all day. I also learned that I'm terrible at applying aerosol sunblock. Even if I didn't get to dock next to you all and have an official meeting with handshakes and beers all around, you at least inspired one extra trip out on the water and we all had a bit of fun. I tried to talk my son into doing some dinghy races but he said it was boring and he'd stick with karate for now.
Oh well.
