Title: How the Grinch Stole Sailing Season
Post by: Greene on April 19, 2013, 09:07:09 AM
This Wisconsin winter is one mean ol' tenacious bugger.  Heavy snowfall, low temperatures hanging around well past their appropriate dates, mud, wind and then unending days of rain.  The good news is it finally quit raining today....it is snowing instead!

Last season I was working on Wrinkles in my t-shirt in March and was sailing in April.  This year the 23 is stuck under her carport looking really dusty and sad.  We actually have one, yes one, day of decent weather forecast over the next week.  It it supposed to zoom up to 48 degrees and feature real live sunshine.

The Grinch is winning so far, but we sailors are a determined lot.  We'll have our sailing season one way or another here in Whoville, Wisconsin.

Well, Don't feel all alone. What's the old saying "Misery loves company". I am in northern Michigan...light snow, wind and temperature of 36. On top of that our power was out the last 8 hours. (back on now). But I think I see a smile beaming from under the tarp in the driveway. She knows her time is coming soon.

I was going to bring my 23 home from the marina tonight for a little pre-season cleaning and upgrades, but we got 6-8 inches of snow in St. Paul last night (more coming down right now), so I'll be snow blowing the driveway instead of sitting on the boat in the driveway fantasizing.

I kinda wish I had the boat in the water already, how often do you get to sail in a snow storm? But she is going back into the water next weekend no mater what, and with the spring we're having, I might still have a chance to sail in the snow this year.

Good luck to all of us.

Same here Mike.

Well, no snow at least.  The rains have raised our lake to the point it's closed.  The local river is over it's banks, roads are closed, fields are flooded, whole towns are without water, gas, and electricity, and towns along the Illinois river have been evacuated.

Our daughter's basement flooded, ruining her husbands recording studio... guitars, drums, amps and the like.

No rain today, but the winds are hitting 35 mph.  Too windy for this sailor to retrieve our 19 from Carlyle Lake Marina were Jason did a bottom job on it.

My heart goes out to all you snow-bound Compac-o-nauts! 63F now in NJ...rain forecast...making slow progress on the yacht. The Admiral is demanding it be out of her driveway and pronto..or else! Hoping to be in around mid-May...

We watched the grandkids first little league game today here in upstate NY.  There was just a hint of sun, lots of wind and the temps almost reached 50.   We all went home quite chilled.  It might have been a good day to get the Madame out of storage but since we leave for the Sunshine state on Tuesday for 2 weeks we decided to keep her in a safe place until we return.
Hmmmm...?    Are there any Com-Pacs in the Hollywood, FL area?  We are really starting to feel the bug!

Well it's Sunday, and you what? It snowed heavy. Again.
seems like I'll never get the boat and car out of storage.
We have a model 'A' breakfast next Saturday. We'll be going in the Mercury.
And the dock? Maybe it'll be splashed in July for the 4th.?

Since there is no such thing as Global Warming, I'm totally befuddled!.

Well the next four days still have cold temps and a rain/snow component, but the Grinch is losing his meanness this weekend.  They are forecasting normal spring temps and even sunshine.  Sounds like sailing season may finally start.  As soon as Brenda heard "sunshine" she immediately got the vacuum out and climbed into Wrinkles to get the spring cleaning done.  That woman sure loves her sailing and water time.

Let the fun begin.

Of course that was between tornadoes and it was back down to 29deg 5 days later!  But opening day was good!

Man, I thought we had it bad this winter/spring in Ohio.   Sounds like we in fact got off easy compared to you Wisconsin boys, not a flake of snow in April and it's starting to feel like spring, although only in the last week.

Life isn't too good for Punxsutawney Phil this year. According to this article, an Ohio prosecutor is seeking the death penalty on poor 'ol Punky Phil.

well yesterday we decided to give it a try. 72 degrees wind southeast 10 to 20. perfect sailing on carlyle lake----we thought.  who would have thought the 7 year old battery in my s-10 would have died? it did.  undaunted, i jumped it with the tractor put the cables in the tool box and off we went. sadly when we got to hazlett they had pulled the docks out. the lake was flooding and they expected it to continue to rise. well without the docks to tie up to we gave it up and headed home and sadly "audrey j" was back in her spot in the garage. i have yet to field test my new furler. jason im gonna get in touch with you next week about the lake level. for those sailing ----fairwinds and calm seas.   for clr sailors-----practice for the "big race"

Lake level as of right now will goto 451
Hopefully it will be in good shape and not go up farther. We have started flood prep because in 1 more foot we start to evacuate the basement of our office......not a big deal.....yet.

The only ramp open is the high water damn west ramp I think. May be another one on the lake I don't know of.

Hopefully we don't get any more rain till we can handle more comfortably.... and they plan to open to 10000 cfm asap in regards to the river.

Feast or famine around here with water.........

Mac

I brought Annie Belle home this week for a little maintenance and a few upgrades. We got 6" of wet heavy snow last night. The snow is beautiful, the boat is beautiful, but the boat in the snow in late April is just sad.

can tell there is a lot of snow melt and runnoff up north.  Went to the marina yesterday and it was a wet cold trek to the boat.  Marina has floating docks but the access ramps start at hinged fixed point ramps on the bank.  One end of the ramp floats up with the dock, the other stays at the bank hinge point elevation.  The bank end was underwater yesterday, so a knee deep walk through some very cold water.  Going back today, shorts and crocs for access. :o

My condolences to all whom have felt cheated this year, but hopefully that will change soon!

I did manage to get two beautiful, adrenalin filled days with my 16 last week, May 2nd and 3rd.... Winds very lively, gusts even more so, and I got to check my new sails and Honda 2hp! Awesome 2 days of sailing in steady 15kts., that was great, it's the 25kt gusts that can catch you off-guard.. Got wet for sure, but didn't dump it and only felt desparate once... Ohio is beautiful in May!
