Title: Sailing on Lake James, NC
Post by: rcanterbury on January 30, 2006, 01:47:25 PM
I live in  Boone, NC and I have a 1987 Compac 16/2 that I have sailed mostly on Watauga Lake, TN. I used to take our pontoon boat to Lake James but haven't sailed there yet.

Can anyone tell me the best place to launch and sail my 16/2 on Lake James.

I am also interested in meeting others who sail Lake James.

I would appreciate any information about sailing on Lake Norman as well.

Thanks,

Robin, I've boated quite a bit on Lake James, but not yet in my CP16. I've heard through other sailors that the most reliable wind is down the Linville River to Mimosa Landing channel. The surrounding hills probably give some frustrating dead spots in other areas of the lake. But that's why I've got an outboard with me. Putting in at the Linville River access area requires the lake level to be fairly high for a sailboat. I think the lake level can be found through the Duke Power Co. website. I would use the Canal Bridge access area near the State Park, it has a steep ramp, deep water and the bridge you pass under heading east is plenty high enough for a 16's mast. When I get ready to take this 16 sailing I'll give you a yell.  Tim K.
