A project update on the '81 CP16 mkI: to secure the lazarette hatch, I added two hinges at the back and a latch with rotating/locking pin. I also applied 1/8" thick by 3/4" wide marine self-adhesive weatherstrip to the inside of the lazarette hatch. In order to get proper alignment of the latch and latch-pin-plate, I needed to bend the latch due to the lazarette hatch lip which extends out past the cockpit wall below. Done with projects for the winter, boat is now ready to go once the ice is off!

The hinge and tape are fine but the hasp to lock her down is just something to cut open some skin on.

In some ways spring cant come soon enough,.... but since I am so far behind, I am okay with the rough weather for a bit yet LOL

My 23 has on her port and starboard lockers exactly what youv'e done with your 16. I assumed that it was just a factory setup. Yeah, you could cut yourself but so far, I haven't.

Nope,didn't have a latch or hinges previously. It had the standard internal bungee hold down. My goal was to get a solid mechanical hold down and a tight seal. I sailed frequently on lake Michigan last year and plan to do so again this year, and I want that hatch really secured in the event of any big wave. Though I will watch forecasts to try to avoid nasty weather. The lazarette would be such a huge opening for water to come through..... Now I know its down tight.....can't wind up overboard accidentally , etc.. and now there's no bungee taking up space in the locker.
On the other hand the bungee always worked fine, so its possible that this project was driven by just wanting to do boat projects. Shiver me timbers.

Side note, caution on over filling or putting something too heavy on the scupper tubes in the lazarette, they are not too structural and one wouldn't want to knock them loose.
Thanks for posting; I've been thinking of doing something like this for security in rough weather. Looks good.

I've had the same latch setups on my 27 and in 6 years I've owned Allure have yet to "cut open some skin"...enough said !! Any means to keep the cockpit lockers shut in rough weather is a safety upgrade, and a highly recommended. Good job.

P.S. I learned early on (with my Catalina 25) to keep the lazarett latched, and at least one or two hatch board in place when underway. Better to be safe than sunk !!!
The lazarette in stock form is not a good secure set up.
You have solved the problem nicely and, if you have your hatch boards in place, your C 16 will survive a knockdown or a boarding wave nicely.
Without it, the water could enter and sink your boat.
Well done.
On my CP16, 1978, I installed the same set up a number of years ago...............and with a padlock it keeps the contents secure,..............nies
