Title: Need an engine?
Post by: jimyoung on January 06, 2013, 08:41:46 PM
After re-powering Miss B. with a new Yanmar I parked the old Universal on the back porch with intentions of doing something with it but it has become obvious that will never happen (too many other projects).  Any of you 27 owners intrested? It's from a '86 and is in good condition, just needs a new home. Thought I would check with fellow 27 owners first before trying to sell it.

Not trying to jack your thread but depending upon people locations I will soon have a M12 for sale out of Koinonia and Im located in Anderson SC.   Its from hull #4 and in great shape, Im going to an M25XP for some added power.

Which yanmar did you go with?  Any pictures? What HP do you have  and did you reprop? if so what diamater and pitch, number of blades are you using?  Im leaning to a varifold 13X12 3 blade.

Sorry guys, the engine was scarfed up by the first person that looked at it.

Koinonia, I went with the Yanmar YM20, here is a picture I took while doing the re-fit;

The re-fit was fairly straight forward and I would highly recommend it.

Title: Draw project?
Post by: Allure2sail on January 17, 2013, 08:11:37 PM
How did you make out with that idea? Sent you an email about a drawer but have not seen anything else posted. I have some cabinetry I took off of Allure that you might be interested in. It was above the hanging locker and looked factory.

Bruce,

Sent one to your profile e mail... Is it a good one?  Don't cut up the drawers, I am intrested!!!

Also would like to get ahold of the plastic frames for the two hatches in the cabin top.  The swing tabs that hold the screens in place have broke off on one of mine.

bruce, how far gone is this parts boat? Ive thought a Pilothouse 27 would be sweet but Id want something that was pretty far gone to do that much cutting up to.  With the boats beam that could make for a very roomy main salon with inside steering.  Any pictures?
Title: Hull condition...

The cement in the keel got pushed up Through the galley floor and the port side got a hole poked in it.. Never actually sank because it got pushed up onto the shoreline at the yacht club just south of Boston (Dorchester). Anything can be fixed but the person would have to have plenty of time, be really determined and have a thick wallet. Come and get it, I've got the title, it's C.G. documented and the price is $1.00.......take it away !!!! My neighbors will thank you and you will save me the trouble of cutting it up.

Hi Mac:
The boat is about 15 miles outside of Providence, RI (east). I think it is to much of a project to bring this one back. Sure the keel trunk could be rebuilt and the hole fixed but the bowsprit  has been sold (to another member). Also four of the six portholes have been reused on my current 27/2 (the other two I sold). The desk to hull seam was never damaged, I have the mast and boom and main sail, (head sail was sold). Also have the cushions from my boat to go with it. The cushions in this boat looked brand new and had not gotten wet so I swapped them off. I can send you pictures of the boat but for a ComPac owner they can be depressing. Engine is there and turns over but I'm sure it needs a rebuild. To sum it up....virtually anything can be fixed, but I wouldn't test that theory on this one !!!

Hi jimyoung:
I have not forgotten about your drawer and door. The work shed and parts boat are snowed in.....I know I have a drawer or two and the cabinetry over the hanging locker (I'll send you a picture of it). I'm not sure if the parts boat (1987) has the storage doors to get under the settees. I think it might have been an option or year dependent Will check as soon as some of this snow melts. I will check on screen frames as well. I plan on using the drawer set up on the starboard side (minus the door) in the vberth in the vertical surface where the two angled walls come together below the cushion insert. There is nothing behind that wall and I think I have enough space behind the wall for the depth of the drawer housing. I'll just trim the drawer cabinetry where the fold down door begins. I have the group 27 battery for the windless in a box behind the angled wall on the starboard side, and it works out well. I use a semi flexable solar panel with a regulator to keep it charged. The other solar panel I have (same model) sits on the cabin roof to charge the two group 27 batteries (house and starting) under the stairs. I have a small three way toggle switch to switch back and forth between the two batteries and one postion to not charge either one. Works out pretty well. I had thought of buying Honda 2000 watt portable generator like allot of people in the sailing group use but so far the solar panels have kept up with my charging needs.

Hi Jimyoung:
Enough snow melted so I was finally able to get into the parts boat and it does not have the fold down access doors to get under the settee's (I suspect that was an option, both boats are 87's). Could you use the door on the starboard side drawer setup? On my boat that bottom access is not a drawer but a door to get into that storage area. I can still do a drawer for you and still have the wood work that was above the hanging locker and behind the bulkhead. I also looked at he screen retainer tabs that you needed on the two ports and one has two broken latch tabs and the other has on missing. I think if you just looking for the tabs that swivel they should be not that difficult to reproduce out of a piece of flat plastic and a little cutting, drilling and shaping. Pretty much done with the boom brake project and with the help of fellow members it should works fine.
