Title: Dates for Carlyle Lake (IL) Rendezvous-CLR2013
Post by: Salty19 on December 04, 2012, 08:38:37 PM
For the new members out there, for the last 5 years a group of us have been getting together at Carlyle Lake, IL, apps 50 miles east of St. Louis, to sail our hearts out, race (if you can call it that), drink grog and tell lies around the docks.  It's organized mostly by our own Kicknbug and his wife Sarah, along with some of the other crew, and by now we have the event down pat.   For those of you that have wanted to come, and for new members willing to travel, I can promise you you will not be disappointed in the event!   Mix a great sailing lake and marina, a colorful cast of captains and crew, some grog including Greene's famous Brandy Slushies, and a few days of nothing but Compac sailing and dockside storytelling and it's hard to go wrong.

It's probably not too early to set dates for the CLR. I know some need to schedule time off far in advance.

I'll throw out July 18-21 as a potential date for us to consider as a starting point. For those who will attend:  Yay?  Nay? Other dates?

So let's see..the cast of characters I'll guess will be there:

Kicknbug and crew
Greene and Crew (or is it crew and Greene?)
Sailen69
Lafayette Bruce
Crazycarl and crew
Salty 19 and crew
McGuyver and crew
Toolman and crew
JJWoods
Another non-member with a widened, lengthened, water ballasted, dual rudder catboat CP16 conversion. It's the boat on the left in the first pic.

A Motley Crew indeed:    ;D

MacGyver and Crew think that is a great idea, and do indeed have to put in to have it off in advance.

Once I see that it is solidified then we will put in to take it off.

We will have less restrictions this year (Lightning restrictions have been lifted somewhat since last CLR)
And my wife promises a new and tried and true recipe for the get together.  ;D

I also will be sure to have my  8) tan as well.......

The crew of Wrinkles certainly hopes to attend CLR 2013.  We actually plan on staying a few extra days (like we did in 2010) to enjoy the wonderful sailing and swimming available on Carlyle Lake.  I believe I am finally recovered from assisting Crazy Carl into his coconut bra last year.  Therapy isn't quite as expensive as everyone thinks.

We are pretty flexible about scheduling time-off, so most dates will work for us.  We hope to see all you regular characters there and look forward to meeting some new recruits.  Come join us - you'll have a ball.

Salty,

Thanks for taking the lead on this and getting it rolling.  Believe it or not, I already bid my vacation for 2013, back in October to be exact. I know, it sucks to do it that early, but it is what it is.   Luck of the draw I have a week in July, the only guaranteed full weekend off for me would be 7/11-7/14.  If I don't have scheduled OT on a Saturday I can play hooky on Friday and make it down to Carlyle in about 6 hours.  Our schedule is posted 28 days in advance so that's when I'll know.   I have off the two weeks after Labor Day, but that is probably too late in the season for everyone else.   I'll follow the thread and see what dates become final and go from there.  Hope I can make it.  (I may have to call in sick to make it happen, oh well!)

Greene, you have a PM.

i'd like to see it scheduled for mon thru fri.  that would give those who live far away the weekends to travel.

perhaps then bob 23 could attend and he and mike can finally have that dingy race?

Now that I finally have a C16, I do plan on hauling it the 800 miles round trip to attend.  I have family in the Carlyle area and can use that as further excuse.  I think I can make any of the dates work with enough lead time.  So put me on the list please.

It is always nice to see sailboats out on the lake but it is very nice to see COMPAC boats together.

I am looking forward to another CLR.  I am very flexible for the dates but getting something scheduled helps a lot.  I will probably plan on a few extra days in hopes of catching some good wind sailing days.

last year was august but hey we dont care when it is we will do what it takes for everyone to have a great time. and to those who attended last year---i will not wear that dumb straw hat again. since the "race" went so well (even though we were last---thats right jason) that we will have that again. hey im rambling (im old). anyway welcome to all cp sailors. laughs abound.

I like Carl's idea of doing this during the week--sometimes this is tough for folks to take off a week, but in theory the lake would be quieter, little hastles at the ramp, and perhaps a little less stress during trip prep and return.

In the end, Salty and crew are flexible so whatever works for everyone else will probably be fine.

Does anyone second vectors' dates of July 11-14? Maybe we could start a day or two prior to accomodate him and have most of the event during week??

All,

Just to be clear my "week" off is from 7/5-7/15.   So it is really 10 days.  I figured that the week after the 4th would be fairly quiet on the lake, whichever one we wind up at.  I've never been to Carlyle.  I grew up in St. Louis (Lake St. Louis to be precise) and raced Y-Flyers and Sunfish there as a teenager in the late '70s.  I remember there being regattas at Carlyle but I never made it to one.   I still make it down to STL a couple of times a year for family visits.  We are headed down there on the 23rd for our annual Christmas party.  Towing the boat down shouldn't be too difficult albeit slow going as I can't see going much over 60mph with the boat behind the Jeep.  We can make it in about 5 hours in the Range Rover @ 75-80 depending on construction and traffic.

At any rate that week is the best for me.

i can say that we are on board with the during the week idea. carlyle is pretty much empty during the week except for a few fishermen. since we never sail on the weekends except the clr, we concur. vectorman you will not be disappointed. sarah and i will do our best to make the event memorable. launching carls boat usually sets the tone.

My wife can take off the 6th thru the 14th, and I would just have to shuffle my schedule, but that shouldnt be a issue, might just have to work a few days then be off for the core of CLR.

I think I won second to last only because of my newbie ways...... and maybe a motor.........  :)

But fear not Steve! Rich has been training me to be a better sailor, I might actually use my sails this year! HAHA!

2012 was our first CLR, and It was great (Minus all the Family tragedy and Chaos that happened) and we really had a great time.
To anyone thinking about coming, It is a great way to meet the folks on here, and a great way to make friends. It is a lot of fun, and Carl is Crazy.

I would like to offer to make shirts for CLR, just covering my costs, and am tinkering around with a logo design.......
I am back in the graphics business (which I was in before the lightning, for around 10 years) and my friend has turned what was my company into a much bigger behemoth than what I had originally.
Now I can screen print shirts, full color printing, vinyl graphics, can coozies, etc. A TON.

I will see what I can come up with, and any ideas are welcome, as I will post the final to get a idea if it is a good idea to make shirts or not.

I will be watching the thread closely, cause once it solidifies, I will put in for the time off, as will my wife.

We have been looking forward to this since last years event end.

Mac,

I was toying with making some shirts myself.

How's this: "Compac Yachts, anything less is just a boat" in a circle around a line drawing of a Compac

Great Idea you Crazy Carl!

I will try to do that in the next few days, and post a pic.
Just talked to my buddy and he said it would be best to probably do Screen printing on the shirts, So they will most likely be solid color stuff.

This means the shirts will hold up a long time :D

I will see what I can do in the program, I need the highest sized picture you have, the better the quality, the better the lines come into the program.

years ago in my youth i was an artist (well college art student). i will put a couple of things together and get them to you jason. i think it would be nice to use the com-pac logo on the front (pocket area) with the main graffic on the back (like a couple of years ago). this would necessitate contacting hutchins to get permission. should not be a problem. again we are flexible on the dates as long as we have some advance notice----mainly for the winery.

I will run up a design, and also totally open to your designs Steve, It would be nice to have several designs done up and make sure they will all work on our equipment then take a vote.

I just vectorized Carl's Line drawing, and it came through and is clear after a little work on the vectorizors part.

Any other line drawings? I am trying to develop a idea I have........

I figure once I know what we will utilize then would be the time to ask Hutchins since we wont be asking for every logo they have, we would be able to be more specific.

i figure i could do a drawing with a 16,19,eclipse and 23 under sail. ill make it about the size of what you typically see on the back of a t shirt.

Kicknbug!  An artist!  You're pullin' our halyards!!!

I love the idea of showing all the boat types in attendance. I'm sure whatever you guys come up with look awesome.

Jason, maybe you could whip up some personalized polos for those that want one.

Name of boat on left breast. Maybe an outline with Compac xx on the sleeve?
Or name on sleeve, logo on front?

Hutchins will let us use the logo. But yes do ask to be polite, tell him it's for the Carlyle lake Rendezvous as he's aware of the event. I've sent him the DVD's in years past, and he's donated hats at each event. Should probably ask him for hats again too (I'll ask him closer to the event). Based on the sunburned pictures of Jason, I think you might need one  ;D 8)

Those CLR koozies we had made had the logo, Gerry said no problem too. We still have more to give away, no need to make more unless you really want to.

Having access to that stuff, why not?

Kickinbug, That would be great, and actually if you could do a line drawing of each boat, minus them all together would be better, in the program one day at my house (2 miles from marina) we can organize it all together and do what your wanting.
BUT if you want to make it all together on one sheet, no problem either, just do it on a 8 and a half by eleven sheet, preferrably card stock if possible, it will scan better in the scanner.

Salty, I can do all of that actually, and am working on a setup as we speak. My neighbors grandson is a MX racer  (11 years old! really rippin up the track and catching pretty solid attention from what I have seen!) and they want hoodies, shirts, etc.
Was at the shop the other night and started to learn this set of product line. So how far I can push things is yet to be known. BUT we can do full color stuff on shirts and all that.
Screen printed stuff requires a screen charge, and a minimum run, so depending on what is done will depend on process.

Steve an R-Teest?

That would explain the eccentric side of him.

What other traits is he concealing from us?

I can only assume, judging his actions, he's also a stand-up comic, sings Barbra Streisand songs in the shower, and wears pantyhose under his jeans.

Just an observation...

A video of "THE" launching would have been impossible to get.  Between the gut wrenching laughter the swimming and the sprinting to the jetty portions of "THE" launch, I don't believe anyone could have shot video.

Maybe Carl (with Steve's active participation) will recreate it again in 2013 so we can get it on video.

I did run across an old picture of Steve from CLR 2011, when he was sporting the artist's look.  Ooh La La!

Sounds like you guys wrote the book on launching and for there not to be a video, is a disservice to your fellow Compac-o-nauts!

Bob23,

You need not bring your own boat to attend CLR.  You'd be welcome to sail on any of our's.

With a legend such as yourself in attendance, I'm sure a crowd will gather to catch a glimpse.

Of course, you would have to bring along your dingy to show Mike who's the real rowing champion!  ;)

What do you mean "real" rowing champion. Squint the Famous Racing Dinghy and I are the official CLR champions.  We won fair and square.  Bob and his backyard rowing thingy didn't show up and I won by default.

I offered the infamous Bob the tiller on Wrinkles last year.  No luck!  VIP type - waiting for more perks I bet.  Of course after seeing the way we pick on each other he is probably smart to stay clear of us CLR'ers.

I smell rematch!
I just got racing bottom paint for the Walker Bay 8 so I'm thinking of naming the boat "Bye, Mike!" Of course, transom lettering would only be appropriate. The WB8 is infamous....just ask Marty or JT!
It is true that Mike Greene won by default and if I remember correctly, I owe him a bottle of Drambuie! An empty bottle!!!! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!!!

as i said before the dates dont matter too much to us. as usual i spoke too soon. sarah says we have to wait and hear when her nephew is getting married before we can commit to the dates. as you can tell i care very little about attending a wedding. one of those was more than enough. i will post something as soon as i know for sure. be after the first of the year for sure. if the wedding coincides with the clr i suppose i could sail alone unless someone has a hot sister.

Ok Bob, now you have the dates.  I officially challenge you to a dinghy rowing race rematch.   I wager one bottle of Drambuie and a Spotted Cow beer to your Jose Cuervo Reserve and Guiness.

C'mon down to CLR 2013 so we can finally meet.

You know...I'm thinking about it but I've been reluctant to say that because I've thought about it for the last 3 years! For sure, thinking isn't gonna get that Drambuie- it's gonna take action, training and a heeping helping of luck!
So much can change in 6 months...heck so much has changed in the last 2 weeks. I had the unfortunate job of putting my mom in a nursing home this past Wednesday. She wasn't fully agreeable, but hasn't recovered 100% from a broken ankle in September. Although there really was no other choice, it is gut wrenching beyond what I expected.
This has nothing to do with CLR 2013. I should just throw all reason to the wind and go. If all goes well, I'll be adding another steed to my rowing fleet this coming week. More to come.
Thanks for the standing invite. I've been reading this thread since it started. What better way to celebrate the non-ending of the world today?

Bob23
Title: Re: Dates for Carlyle Lake (IL) Rendezvous-CLR2013
Post by: MacGyver on January 24, 2013, 06:47:03 PM
We have a lift that enters the water via a rail system, we handle boats on that up to around 36 feet in length depending on weight.

We do have a travel lift, Acme Hoist, 20 ton plus model, but do not utilize traditional means of launching and pulling due to it being a flood control lake, and our marina layout, it just isnt suitable for us at our marina.

Keyesport Marina has a well that they use their setup on, a lift like our Acme Hoist, but the position of their marina gives them the option to use such a setup.

The marina I work at is the marina that CLR is conducted out of  ;D

Hi,   I've noted the Sailing Event being held at Carlyle Lake, and all the information about it on Wooden Boat Forum (another web site)....   However, via this msg thread, I have noted that there is confusion as to the dates for when the sail event will be held.   The last msg thread on this topic was posted in January 2013...    This is early June 2013,...  It's time to close up the details of the dates for the Carlyle Lake sail event, along with any other details that may have changed...
