Title: Berth removal

Repair-challenged but enthusiastic ownwer of a Compac 16 needs to remove original port-side berth for repair/replacement. How should I proceed to detach/remove berth from hull? Thanks for any and all assitance and advise!

Hi Sam,

Welcome to the group. Luckily my CP 16 was in fine shape inside but several members here have had to make bunk repairs. I am sure you will get some replies. You might want to rview the posts here as this topic has come up before. There may be images of such repairs in the Gallery side of this board.

I have never seen any mechanical attachments on my bunks. I assume the wood was epoxied in place?

Last year I repaired/replaced the berths and actually had to gut the entire cabin on my CP-16.  A previous owner had glassed in a 1/2" plywood deck over the entire bunk and foredeck which I removed.  I found that what what little of the original woodwork was rotted.  This woodwork had also been glassed in by the original builders, (Hutchins). I used a chisel and mallet to remove the larger wood sections and then portable sanding disk grinder to get to the hull. It was a messy job - use a face mask.

I used the upright remains of the bunk as an edge guide for my replacement wood and sheathed the bunks with new boards.  You can see images of the replacement boards and a view below decks in the CP-16 photo gallery and the owners pages.  There are several others who have done the same work and have shared some images there as well.
