Title: Ports with cloudy glass
Post by: marc on September 24, 2012, 08:11:22 PM
OK.
Here's question #2. I have 3 ports with cloudy glass. The photo below shows the the worst one. Seems that the cloudiness is in the glass. I've tried to clean it with a razor blade on both sides and nada. Any idea? Has anyone ever replaced the glass?

Marc - this is a common problem on older 19s. The port light glass is safety glass (2 layers glass with a layer of plastic in the center) and prone to eventual delamination. I just removed one of mine and took it to a local glass shop who made me four replacements. They also could have done it in tempered glass, which would never delaminate, but it would have taken twice as long and I was in a hurry.

Rebedding the new glass is one of the very times when it's OK to use silicone caulk, since there's no contact with the fiberglass hull.

Thanks for the info Wes. Good to hear it's an easy fix.
