Title: New Mainsheet Blocks
Post by: Jason on September 10, 2012, 06:59:39 PM
Hi All,

I've seen many discussions on this topic, so I thought I share what I went with.  Added new harken mainsheet blocks, had to get a bit oversized block at the location where with swivelling cam is.  I use a 3/8" mainsheet.  Went for the fiddle on the boom end block

Jason, How did you install the block/swiveling cam?

Hi, I removed the existing mainsheet attachment hardware and through-bolted the swivel cam in place with 4 ss machine screws.   It's very tight on space underneath, takes some contortionist skills to get the nuts started.  I have found the best setup to be tying the mainsheet through the hole in the center of the port mainsheet block then through the fiddle to the starboard side block and back through the fiddle to the port swivel block/cam. Also, the cam came with a wedge installed under it to tilt the cam a bit. I found this very inconvenient, as I had to lift the sheet too high to loose it. So I took out the wedge and mounted the cam level....much better imho.   Winter project will be to take a look at the starboard block location....right now it is further from the centerline than the port block/cam, and I like symetry.  Locating the swivel/cam where the factory mainsheet cam is was too tight up to the outboard motor.

Hi Jason, thanks for the photo and info. We are in the process of mounting a new swivel base on our 16. We had to remove the top motor bracket bolts to get to the old fitting. We are thinking of mounting the new one further outboard of the original. About where your stern rail is. There's a little more room to mount it there and it will be away from our outboard motor throttle. My question is this: how will having an unsymmetrical mainsheet effect handling? Are you going to move your other block for looks or necessity?
Sure will appreciate any comments from anyone. Thanks!

Hi!  Sorry I hadn't caught this question earlier.  The parts I used are:

1. Harken Low Profile Cam Base-Swivel #205
2. Then I mounted a Harken 57mm carbo swivel block #2600 to the cam base
3. The block on the other side is a Harken 40mm carbo swivel block #2636
4. On the end of the boom I have a Harken 40mm Carbo Fiddle Swivel #2655
