Title: Com-Pac Sailing Day at Jordan Lake
Post by: joe16 on August 25, 2012, 03:23:23 PM
As I recall, there are a few Com-Pac owners in the NC area and I'm wondering if there's any interest in a Com-Pac gathering at Jordan Lake in September. I was thinking of an all day gathering, maybe on the 16th, 23rd, 29th, or 30th.  Planning on launching from Vista Point.

My thought is to pick a primary day and a backup just in case of poor weather on the primary day. And who knows, we might get two sailing days out of it.

So, any takers?  If you're interested and have an opinion, let me know.

Hi Joe - that's a great idea, and I'm definitely in. I live nearby in Durham and often sail out of Vista Point. Will look forward to more details as they develop.

I am interested as well, although my boat is currently being repaired. I should be back in action by mid-September or so. I live in Raleigh and Jordan is where I normally sail.

I'm leaning toward the 29th here. A Saturday seems like the best choice.

I'll put together a loose schedule for the day. I'm open for input as well.

Sounds like fun, I should be able to make it.

The 29th should work for me.

Mark - does this mean you'll have your boat back from Keith's shop?

I hope so. If not, I'll sign up to be your First Mate!

Today was by far the best sailing on Jordan since before this hot, miserable summer began. You could not have asked for a nicer day - sunny, 75 degrees, winds steady at 8-10 knots. It's true the powerboats and jetskis were still pretty thick on the ground, but the beautiful weather put me in a forgiving mood. By the 29th they will have thinned out a little more. If this weather holds we'll have a great time.

Sounds like a great day. Looking forward to the 29th. Hopefully the weather will hold.

Hello,

I live in Kinston and recently purchased a Compac 19. I am interested in meeting on September 29th and splashing the boat for the first time. Looking forward to further details on meeting up.

Serious family illness.  Hopefully all will be well soon.
I won't be able to make it this time but look forward to future happenings.
Have fun and be safe!

          I look forward to photos!

I've been working under the assumption that everyone is familiar with Vista Point. In case anyone isn't, park info can be found at:

http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/jord/pics/vistapt.pdf

I'm thinking arrive early and set sail by mid-morning or so. My target is to hit the water between 9 and 10, but you all know how that can get delayed unexpectedly.  Break for lunch back at Vista around noon then an afternoon of sailing.  It's all quite informal as you might expect, so feel free to show up when you can.

Wind forcast looks light to moderate with a chance of rain. Of course, that was a 0% chance this morning and likely to change 14 times or more between now and next Saturday.

Hi Joe - thanks again for taking the lead on this. I'm really looking forward to it. Wondering how coming back to Vista Point for lunch will work - how will we tie up? I don't think we're allowed to dock our boats at the finger docks next to the ramp except when launching/retrieving. I know there's a beach area around the corner where the dinghies and daysailers launch, but I'd have to tie up my 19 to something and wade or swim ashore. I am hoping you have a brilliant solution for this..... 8)

Anything I can do to help organize?

Dang, I just picked up on this thread.  Can't make it this year because of family obligations.
Keep me in the loop for next time. 'Slow Dancing', 434 237-5142, from Lynchburg VA.
Wish you all the best of weather and room at the dock.

Wes - a good point.  I believe you're right about the finger piers.  I figure a gentle grounding in the shallows around near the daysailer beach would work for me, but that might not work as well for the larger boats.  I haven't tried to land at that particular spot before either, although I have had success in the past with the same procedure elsewhere.

Of course, we could just alter the plan a bit to adjust for the glitch, and I'm open to input.  We could delay hitting the water a tad - arrive mid morning and rig the boats and prep for the water.  Then have lunch prior to launching and then off to the water!  That would allow some time in the morning for "Meet & Greet" activities as well as have some extra hands around for set up and general boating "Advice".  Thinking about it now, that might work better.

Just need to settle on a time.  Keith told me when I bought my boat that he could rig a 16 in a matter of minutes ;D, but I know from my past experience that it'll take me about 40 minutes to an hour.  So if we look at a 9-10 arrival instead, plan on lunch at 11-ish and allowing an hour or so for lunch gives a water time of around noon to 1 for an afternoon of sailing.

As far as lunch, I'm open to suggestions there.  Seems to me that the easiest thing to do is have everyone responsible for their own food, and I'm working on having a tailgating grill with me (will confirm) and (if present) it will be available for use if folks would like to bring their favorite grilling meats for lunch.

For tonight, that is about the extent of my brilliant ideas...  where did that remote go?  :)

Unfortunately, I am not able to make it on Saturday due to a family illness. That just means we'll have to have another outing soon! I hope you all have a great day on Jordan. Fair winds to all!

Joe - I think your revised plan is great. It takes me about 45 minutes to drive from Durham, another 45 to rig the 19. Wind forecast is lousy for the morning anyway; 1-3 knots (improving to 4-5 knots by noon). So if nobody else objects, lets aim for 9-10 arrival, early lunch on shore, afternoon sailing.

I suggest we gather at the right rear of the parking lot - immediately to the right as you enter the lot. There's never anyone there, so we will have it to ourselves. There's also a mini-picnic area there with a table and maybe a grill.

Any idea how many are coming? Sounds like Mark and Jill are out, you and I are in. Who else is coming? Donnie, Terry, Clingra? Can we get a virtual show of hands?

I plan to be there. I will be coming from Kinston and will try to make it around 10am or so. Again, I just purchased my CP19 last week and will be looking for advice on this boat and the lake, having never been to Jordan Lake. I owned a CP23 years ago and currently own a CP16 as well so I am familiar with Compac's. Most of my experience sailing is from New Bern to Morehead/Cape Lookout.

Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Well, the weather forcast is looking iffy for Saturday...  low wind and 60% chance of rain.  Going to keep an eye on it for the rest of the day and see. It looked like the rain should be scattered, but the lack of wind is an issue.

Any thoughts?  I've got Sunday down as a back-up.

After looking at the WRAL forecast on line and the Wunderground forecast calling for 60% chance of rain and light winds for tomorrow, I have decided I will not make the 2 hour trek. I have obligations for Sunday so I will probably pass on meeting up at this time.

Hopefully we can meet up another weekend before this year is out.

Folks, I think Terry is right on this one. I'm going to call off Saturday.  Sunday is looking much better-20% chance and 6 mph wind in the afternoon.

I know it's tough on a gathering to switch plans but I'm going to try to shift my sailing to Sunday.  Wish the weather was cooperating a bit more, but that's how it goes I guess.  If anyone can make it let me know. Might need to alter the schedule a bit since it is Sunday, of course.

However it shakes out, I was excited to see the interest.  Hope we can try again sometime.

It's too bad it waited until the weekend to rain.  the weather has been so beautiful the past week!
I will not be able to make it Sunday.
I hope everyone has fun.
Please do post if this happens again!

I hope to see pictures!

Have a great time. Sincerely,   Jill

So sad that Sunday doesn't work for me either. I was really looking forward to this! Let's schedule another one soon - we should have lots of beautiful sailing weather coming up.
