Title: Supplemental Padding for Cushions
Post by: Spartan on July 14, 2012, 10:18:20 PM
First of all i haven't been able to get to the boat in 3 or 4 weeks, kids schedules and weather not cooperating

So I am planning some Aug time off work and thinking about a 3 day retreat to the boat.  I was wondering if anyone has added extra padding
to their cushions and did it provide a more restful sleep?  I was looking at some 3" egg crate mattress pad.  Wouldn't leave it on board but thought it make be more comfortable.

Thanks

I use a ThermoRest (actually a knock-off from REI: http://www.rei.com/product/778150/rei-camp-bed-25-self-inflating-pad). I use them on my CP23, one thing to think about on the 16 is the width of the berths, you might have to get a narrow backpacker's model.

Hey Spartan:
I have only spent one night (solo) aboard our C16 and a 2/3 length 2 inch self inflating back packers pad, such as NateD mentions, allowed me to extend my head and shoulders further forward.  It also made the berth more comfortable.  It rolls up into a very small package when not in use.
Sweet dreams

Have used the blue foam pads from the camping section of WalMart under the cushions that came with the boat.   They are cheap and you can leave them on the boat.

You should consider 2" Memory Foam. Although somewhat heavy and bulky it is really comfortable, AND you did say that you wouldn't leave it on board - so storage isn't a problem.

Tom, I did a 5 day solo trip on my Cp-16, awhile back. I didn't add extra foam, but slept on top of a summer rated sleeping bag. I large pillow is a must- as my head was resting on the trim near the wood shelf,  then I was comfortable.

Thanks everyone, I think my take away is most are using some extra something.

I have thought about somehow raising up the bunk are like Mike W talks about to get head farther forward (or feet I suppose) to keep from going under cockpit.

Thanks again, lots to think about.
