Title: Shaft log clamps
Post by: Allure2sail on June 17, 2012, 10:53:27 PM
Hi:
Recently adjusted my stuffing box and researching the "drip rate" on the internet found an interesting fact. The article talked about how the clamps usually rust out underneath where you can not see. The reason for that is they are usually wet from a combination of the stuffing box drip and the the shaft log channel which is usually full of salt water. The clamps really didn't look that great to begin with (most likely the original), but when I changed them I was surprised the rust on them underneath where they could not be seen. Glad I changed them.....I think it's called "piece of mind".
sail safe....

Thanks for the tip.  My clamps looked great up top, but I loosened them to inspect underneath.  One was nearly fractured through!

Allure2sail,

Try to use the NON PERFORATED ALL STAINLESS  Clamps if possible. And, be sure to DOUBLE CLAMP (below waterline) with the two clamps side by side ORIENTED IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS.

Nicolina,

Had Dripless Shaft Seals on a Bayfield 32 and an Island Packet 35 for many years. They work quite well.

Nemo - I see PSS brand listed at Defender. Are those the ones you've used?

Wes,

Not 100% certain, but I believe so. Looked PSS Shaft Seal up and it sure looks like the ones I had. The other one to consider is the Lasdrop Seal. Both will do the job so get the best price you can.

If a drip less seal goes bad their a pita, had that happen once and now I preference a traditional packing but with the more modern material.  This can also be dripless.  Also if I was going to change the seal its a good time to change the hose.  Deepblueyachtsupply.com has great prices and carries buck Algonquin hose.

Have had the same dripless seal on Miss B for 15 years now and every time I think about replacing it I can find no reason to so it stays on. Could not recommend anything else.
